Chris Morgan? Chris Fucking Morgan? You think that assists your argument?
We gave him an opportunity, unfortunately it didn’t work out. There are tons of examples of it working out up at all levels of football. Plus in addition to him being a coach he is a very good back up to Egan with a wealth of premier league experience.

He’s not a coach. There’s no reason to believe he is. Morgan was given a ‘chance’ for financial reasons relating to his contract rather than on merit. He proved himself an appalling coach. You would not be suggesting the Everton player if he hadn’t played for us before. It’s Bladey Claptrap. We are a professional football club, not a charity retirement home for volleyball players.

I’m sure if Guardiola hadn’t played for Barcelona or Zidane for Real Madrid they wouldn’t have given them a chance there either.

It’s hardly charity, I would pay him a squad players wage and he would provide backup to Egan (only if Stearman leaves). At the same time if he wants to do his coaching badges then he can do them with United.

I'll take him on if he'll take 5k a week

He won't though.

I'm hoping Stearman doesn't want to leave. Bags of prem experience, brilliant player and excellent competition for Egan.

If we’re hoping to stay up, I’d like to think we’ll have better competition/back up than Stearman.

There is a reason he hasn’t played Premier League football in 7 years!

amen brother ;)

The 2 quoted players played for Barca and RM for a reason.... Because they were world class players.... They also would have shown good coaching and interesting tactical philosophies (possibly at lower/youth level) which convinced their club chairman that they were worth promotion or head coach role.

With all due respect to Jags. He isn't in the same league as those 2.

Has he even done any coaching yet? And why hasn't he done his badges with Everton? I'm sure he's actually been at Everton far longer than his time with us.

The more I think about this the more I’d be against it.

We’re probably going to have a weak budget from the owners so we need to build as much as we can for the future. Jags would take a chunk of that and even if he plays, we will soon be looking for a replacement.

Taking sentiment out of the equation, having someone who has a huge amount of premiership experience in the squad for the current squad to learn from, especially in defence, would be a massive plus.

He'd have to be on a lot lower wages if he were to come in and, no guarantee of a start.

At his age I don't think any of that would be a problem.

It's a no brainer from me if those bits can be agreed

Whilst I understand the sentiment it's seven years more recently than the rest of our squad.

But a 2 / 3 year contract of circa £6m / £9m should not be beyond the scope of what we COULD do wages wise.

...

P.S I’d see Cahill or Jags as being the RCB in the 3 with Bash (sorry) being the bench utility player. Also as additional cover for Egan and jump ahead of Stears in this role.

Have you had a bang on the head?

I would expect someone who bemoans the repetitive fax machine jokes, such as yourself, would refrain from posting tedious rubbish such as this.

We've been linked with him for the past two or three seasons.. it's not happened. And I'd be shocked if it did. Would be a somewhat "meh" signing. Still not forgiven for the fateful handball..

When the Star post an article about it I become more convinced it's not true than ever before

Danny04 With the greatest of respect, why, when there are already two members of staff at the Star who are dedicated correspondents with Utd, is this journalist tasked with producing Utd related articles? Unfortunately, yet again, the article contains glaring inaccuracies as was the case in the article when she proposed players who Utd should sign at the start of last season and included Yaya Toure!!! In all honesty, it doesn't do the reputation of the publication and its staff any good whatsoever and just makes it a laughing stock.

Agreed Soton Jags is 36 now his contract up at the toffees.
His experience would be invaluable with the ability to still play his part.If hes looking to get into coaching we would be an ideal start for him and at 36 his wages shouldn't be a problem

Why would we be an ideal start for his coaching career? Is he any good? Not sure why we should be giving random ex players a first start in coaching. Are we a charity now? What’s in it for us?

He's wealth of experience at the highest level.
His contacts in the game.

I’m ok with this as a one off for experience

Every other signing needs to be young, up and coming (getting better) and rapid.

Neither his wealth of experience nor his contacts in the game mean that he’ll be a great coach, I’m afraid.

You asked what we'd get out of it. There's 2 things right there for a start.
I'm fairly confident he could teach our boys a thing or two. The contacts could come in useful with potential signings at some point.
I don't see what the big deal is tbh. Why wouldn't we take him in a player/coach capacity? Can only be a good thing for the existing players that have next to no experience at Premiership level.

A very experienced player is what's in it for us .A good man as well he may not be interested in coaching but still has plenty to offer as a player for maybe a season or more.
Just my opinion Wilder may not feel the same way.

The constant attacks some aim at Jags on here is beyond childish and pathetic

Jags still a decent player, but not for me

Won't moan tho if CW decides he has something to offer and the package meets our budget

No ! not good enough anymore, not young enough anymore, not quick enough anymore, and he will still want more than what we want to pay.
