Not a Clough fan, but most of his signings did appear decent on paper, just that they turned out to be quite the opposite.

He seems to have a bit of everything. Clearly has some skill, is decent physically and can apparently play centre which suggests he can defend too. Wilder suggested he's after all rounders, he seems to fit that description.

Not that good by championship standards but when you consider the size and pulling power of Burton in the championship, the best they can hope for really is good league 1 players who might do enough to keep them up. McFadzean and O Grady tick that box. It seems right that they are shopping in the same market as us as our aims are the same (be in the championship next season). I would have been pleased McFadzean, Irvine and O Grady through our spine so it stands to reason they are decent signings for Burton.

And being well regarded by people who have seen him.


And being an Australia international.


And having the sort of physique our midfield and team in general would benefit from.



I’m not obsessed with him at all nor do I claim to know loads about him but from the little I’ve seen and everything I’ve read, he SEEMS like he would be a very useful signing at our level.

As a long time supporter of Basham, I agree he looks similar (but from the clips I’ve seen perhaps a little more composed on the ball (though such clips can be misleading)). That would be a good thing for me as I like Basham and think whether he has played in CM or CB or even RWB he’s been better than most of our players over the last couple of years. Another like him (and possibly a bit better) would be just fine by me.

From Summer 2014 we signed


McNulty- Unknown quantity

JCR- League 1 journeyman

Wallace- Never managed a full season.

Higdon- Was a gamble having not been playing in England but looked OK on paper.

Alcock- Peterborough utility man- was never going to be anything special.

McEveley- Saved from the scrapheap when nobody wanted him.

Butler- Looked decent on paper

McGahey- Largely unknown quantity but looked a decent prospect on paper.

Ben Davies- We knew he was an OK squad player from his loan spell. Never going to be anything more though.

Porter (re-signed)- Scraped the barrel.

Basham- Decent signing on paper and in real life.

McCarthy- Decent on paper but not training with the team through the week was a recipe for disaster.

Adams- Unknown prospect- low risk gamble which paid off.

O Grady- Good signing- shame we couldn’t have him for more than 4 games.

K. Wallace- Unknown prospect- low risk gamble which hasn’t really paid off.

Freeman- We knew he was OK cover but he’d already messed us about.

Coutts- coming back off a bad injury.

Holt- Not a bad player but his lack of stature meant he wasn’t right for the balance of the squad we had.

Done- Decent signing on paper and has been OK

Brayford- Excellent signing on paper- Really unlucky with the injury.

S. Davies- Not a bad player but injury prone and not prolific.



It’s the likes of Davies, Freeman, JCR, Alcock, Porter, J. Wallace and Coutts that I take issue with. The first 5 were only ever going to be good enough to be squad players and we shouldn’t have been signing that many squad players. The last 2 had questionable injury records and having got it wrong with Wallace, perhaps shouldn’t have tried it again with Coutts.

The pirouette v Southampton was one of the finest pieces of skill I’ve seen at the lane in many a year. He just didn’t do it consistently. That could be the case with Irvine for all most of us know. That said, I said when I saw the youtube clip he appeared to have that knack that both K-Mac and Coutts have of being able to receive a pass in a tight area and turn out into space. Something Basham doesn’t really demonstrate.

I've seen JI a few times in the flesh (v Hearts) & not rubbishing him by any means, just don't think he is (was) a priority
I'm with you on CB but can't see a lot of point in paying coin replicating him, even if slightly better (short of cover when Bash accumulates another dozen bookings)
Compounded by the fact that we still seem to be hoping Wallace J will do a Lazarus. I reckon the £ (>250k?)would / will be better spent on a (very) different midfielder (or 2):- hard case / destroyer & /or 10 goal a season man ! Piece o'piss finding them
 
Been mentioned a lot on here, but he's exactly the type of player we should be going for if we're looking at proven Championship quality.

He'll be attracting interest from a few Championship clubs, but the Brayford situation could put us at an advantage, and we'd be an attractive opportunity for him.
 
He's right at the top of the scale as far as possible options for that position go.

One of those we should consider if we're going to spend big money on anyone. Him and Fleck would give us everything.

We'd be looking at paying at least £2m + Brayford. I'd have no problem with that. It would leave a bit of a bitter taste that we didn't take him for 300k last summer though when we were linked.
 
Absolute complete player, tall, very good aerial ability, excellent on the ball, good passing ability, quite quick, puts a foot in when necessary and scores goals, perfect midfielder to play along side Fleck if we can get him.
 
It would condemn Burton to relegation so why would get sell him when he's under contract. One reason only and I suspect we don't have the money. It shows the type of player that's out there if you've got the scouting network and Wilder does so I suspect t he's looking for the next Irvine not the current one .
 
I really wanted him last summer. I'd like him even more now.
He's hit the ground running over here and he's the style of midfielder I still think lack.
 
Yep, I think having John Brayford is the only thing that makes this realistic. Definitely a good shout.
 
Wilder - Go get him, strong, athletic, box to box, good in the air, gets a goal - only 24! Offer 2 million plus Brayford, he will only get better!

But you have to understand that you cannot keep a player that wants to leave

Once a player has had his head turned he will create tension and divide within the whole squad

We should then be able to buy him for peanuts because Burton wouldn't want an unhappy and disruptive player at their club

You should realise this because McCabe has told us about this phenomenon often enough

Yep. If we're going to get rinsed for a million for Leonard we may as well pay a bit more for tried and tested.

Would have thought a few will be after Irvine though, and if Derby are interested... wages.

Would be a great signing.
