Yet he's a very good footballer. Needs an enthusiasm and commitment injection but the talent is there. Sooner keep him than Louis Reed.
It's not going to get any better with Couts though is it?

Being technically good is not enough in modern football. You need the physique, fitness and desire. Coutts lacks the last two, Reed the first.

The difference being that Reed's shortcomings come at a fifth of he cost, with at least youth and the tiniest of chances on his side.

Well based on this he looks bloody brilliant. Tall, quick, agile, skillful, solid, good passer... Surely the sort we should be spending what money we do have on.

He does seem to fit the profile and I’d welcome the signing based on the little I know of him.

But it’s worth bearing in mind Basham is a similar size, can play the same positions and if you made youtube reel of him it would include the pirouette v Southampton, the jinking run to the byleline v Walsall, the diving header v Swindon etc. to create the impression of a much more elegant midfielder. That said, I like Basham and would welcome another player that was at least similar.

What I do like from that video though is that he looks happy to receive the ball in tight areas. We only have Coutts in the squad who has that trait and his other shortcomings means he’s surplus so it’s a quality we could do with.

He is a talented footballer and has run the game occasionally. But his attitude is so representative of everything that’s been wrong with our club for a couple of years. So lethargic, outworked and out-fought far too often. Then joking with an interviewer in Scotland about how he gets fined all the time for being too fat. Plus he will be one of our bigger earners. Basically a talented footballer unwilling to put in the work required to take the club forward and happy to steal a very good living from our club. Despite Reed’s limitations, I’d keep him all day long over Coutts.

Those clips are all from the same game though. There's not one game where someone like Basham has done that number of impressive technical contributions.

True, as I say he looks to have that Couttsesque quality of being able to receive a pass in a tight area and come away with the ball (something McDonald had in abundance). If he's also got the sort of workrate and combativeness that someone like Basham offers then he would be a very good signing.

He seems to have a lot of McDonald's attributes. Then when you add in his obvious mobility, agility and the fact he can play centre half he seems to be a real all rounder. If someone who looks as good a footballer as that can also play centre half then you know you've got a good player.

He is officially this years Hooper for me, I'm going to stalk the crap out of him for any signs he could be coming to the Lane.

How about cash plus Scougall with James Wallace thrown in for good measure. Actually better not throw him, he might shatter..

If we can get this guy I really think we should. If it's only Burton in for him then I think we can get him. I'd rather see a fee spent on him than McFadzean. There's no shortage of options at centre half. There aren't many midfielders like him we could get.

Agree this is the sort we must go for ! Just read on Ross County newsnow they EVENTUALLY turned down Burtons 150k bid so surely we have 200k available ? Maybe they will accept 180k or something ?

Really? I was thinking it'd be at least 300k.

If we could get him for around 200k then surely we must, must go in for him. If we're not willing to invest that sort of money for a player like that we're a joke, just as we have been for the last few years in this department.

Maybe your correct but was just thinking because they must have nearly accepted with it saying eventually?

These are the type of players that you have to get at this stage or they quickly become pipe dream material. Surely worth a punt.

Sorry mate just realised you thought the bid turned down was 300 ..?

We could have got Morsey for that kind of money last season...someone pulled the plug...

We could have got Morsey for that kind of money last season...someone pulled the plug...

Exactly the sort of thing I'm referring to over the last few years, the best recent example. Still can't get over that one. Whoever decided against that is a total, total moron.

We've so rarely spent fees like that on that sort of player. But here are some examples of when we have, and it highlights that even we won't go far wrong, such is the sense in this approach.

Baxter - 300k - average contribution, lost him for free
Cuvelier - 300k - zero contribution, lost him for free
Murphy - 200k - good contribution, sold him for £1.8m

Not to mention Blackman who we took a stupid but immediate sizeable profit on.

So as you see, even when only one in three come off, you're still likely to get your money back. You're not risking much.

I fail to understand how the club has deemed it less risky to sink dead money into paying big wages to players who are past their best and have no resale value - if we even own them.

They say they're going to change now but I'm not holding my breath - although I'm quite sure we'll stop paying daft wages for a couple of years.
