Also didn’t Rodney Marsh break Tom McAlister’s leg? Seem to recall Denis Law hitting the winner (3-2?) and no one from the Man City team congratulated him. If memory serves ZTommo never recovered - think he was Scotland’s keeper at the time.

I remember Simon Webster breaking his leg away at Mansfield in an FA Cup tie (1-1). Was never the same player.

Keith Kettleborough was another who was a very fine player on the edge of the England squad in the early 60s until he broke his leg and was never the same player again.

Oh totally the timescale doesn't bode well at all. And who knows how he would be if he did get back ready to play.
Feels a bit like Dane Whitehouse all over again.

Dearden scored first, then Law equalised slotting in the loose ball just after March broke McAlister's leg. Woody took over in goal and a Dearden own goal was City's winner. I believe Summerbee fell out with Marsh over the tackle

Looking at that training video and his physique, I wouldn't be surprised if he switches sports if he can't carry on playing football.

keith kettleborough was very slight but clever midfielder who could also look after himself on the pitch remember a 4th round cup tie against villa when he got sent off for retalliation over a bad tackle just booted the villa player he was already near the dugouts walking off when the ref sent him off he scored some fantastic long range goals as well great player

He did play again. By that time though, Furphy had brought in Jim Brown and Tommo didn't seem to fit. Maybe lost confidence.
Went to Rotherham and West Ham.
Still see that studs up foul today. And Tommo writhing in agony. Hate Marsh. Eddie Colquhoun went for Marsh, non too successfully though.
Big favourite was MacAlister, probably still is amongst us who were around then.
When he played in that Watney cup match, commentator quoted Big Ed saying he was sure this boy will play for Scotland.
Hold Tommo above other Blades keepers. Another Harris era find, and for nowt.

Broke his leg again in Summer 1974 playing in a reserves friendly at Altrincham after diving to catch a ball and falling on the hard pitch

I rated Tom MacAlister the 4th best I ever saw after Hodgy, Burgin and Kelly. I met him shortly after he had recovered from his broken leg when he was the goalkeeper in a Superman type competition (Same as was on BBC in those days, but only amateurs not professionals). It was held at Worksop Sports Centre and competitors had to choose 8 events out of a list of 10. Anyway, to get on with it- One of my choices was football when Tom was the goalie and we had to take 5 penalties and then 3 ,one on one's. Tom saved all 5 of mine- after the 3rd save he came up to me and advised to slow down in between takes. Still missed. However, I was the only one to beat him 3 out of 3 in the one on one. I reckon he felt sorry for me and faked his attempts to save them. Great guy.

Knee injuries are usually more difficult to recover than from a broken leg

The manager sees the players every day on training. We should have realized that at the point of restart if not, then bit too long after and certainly by the start of last season.

I remember hearing his leg break. Everyone in the ground heard the crack - horrible.

In fairness to Webster, by the time he'd properly recovered we had jumped up two divisions, so it was always going to be hard for him to get back in the team then. He was a top character though, and very important in getting us going in that Bassett style!
