I agree, the one thing I would argue is I’m not sure we can find cover. A LCB that overlaps is few & far between.

I also think JOC, Duffy & Basham were the main reason we went to 3-5-2 now with only one of those three left is is it time we look to change?

It would mean signing 2/3 wingers but we probably have adequate for for a midfield 2 with Berge, Fleck, Norwood, Slater & Brunt
i very much doubt we will be playing 352 with overlapping centre backs under slav

one of the most under rated players we have had
brilliant player
He really was, people may laugh at this but he had a bit of Franco Baresi about him. Not the tallest but had a terrific spring, the tenacity of Trevor Hockey, decent turn of pace & had that touch of class about him. Much of United at that time was all about TC (my favourite), Woody, Badge etc, I would have loved to have seen more of him at BDTBL, such a shame his injuries put paid to that.

I assume we'll still play 352, we just won't see our back 3 anywhere near the wings.

We had an amazing innovative and successful interpretation of 352 but it was only amazing and successful when we had the right players playing at their peak. We haven't had that for over a year now, so Slav needs to come up with his own way of doing things which I'm sure he will

Gutted for us as it sounds like we've lost our best player. Moreover gutted for JOC though. Terrific lad & player. He's the one guy I'd have not wanted this to happen to.

Add in Brian Smith, looked a quality young full back who had his career ended by a broken knee cap.
In the same season Simon Webster broke his leg and not long after Peter Duffield suffered a similar fate. On the plus side Bob Booker came in for Webster! Webster and Duffield went onto play elsewhere, but Smith never played again, of course, very sad. Alan Roberts was also another but he'd left by then to join Lincoln.

As for JOC, it obviously is never good when there's no return date and it just goes quiet. He'll have expert advice and the best medical care that you and I can only dream of, but then again even then that may not be enough.

Time for RND to step up if this is true, and, has anyone thought this could be why Bryan hasn't signed??, maybe thinking he could get a better deal??

Sounds like devastating news for JOC, such a shame. Left footed CBs with his talent are as rare as rocking horse 💩 and he was on course to play at the very highest level imo.

For us, it's a blow, but not as cataclysmic as some are making out. We need to remember that we won't be half as reliant on JOCs attacking play now, as Slav's style will be different and unlikely to utilise as many attacks from CBs.

I am not saying that we don't need to strengthen in defence, but we won't need to sign someone as good as JOC going forward, so on that basis Robinson and Stevens will be adequate LCBs at Championship level for the time being. RND could potentially get a chance in there too, if we don't sign somebody decent, for whatever reason.

For me, the priority signings were and still remain those in midfield. A creative player and a ball winner being at the top of the list. Sort those two out, and then we can worry about the defence.

I think the 3 stays at least as an option because of the personnel we have but it’ll likely be a different type of 3 to wilder potentially more conventional with the middle defender being the one to bring the ball forward up the pitch.

Duffield broke his leg in season after (v Swindon in Dec 1989) and so did Mike Lake (v Ipswich in Jan 1990). John Gannon broke his arm in April 1990 (v Port Vale)

The noise of Brian Smith’s leg breaking is something I remember 40 odd years later. And it happened in the corner from the south stand and Bramall Lane and I was on the kop behind the goal. It was a haunting sound.

Desperate news for the lad and sufc ....

Was it Webster who looked rubbish at the back but was then a revelation in midfield?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record having posted this many times before we need an aerial dominant replacement for JOC. We conceded far too many in the air last season because of his absence. The need for this will increase ten fold in the championship as the umper lumpers will be launching crosses in and long throws. Robinson, Stevens, Norrington Davies are not the answer they are left backs and Bryan looks to have taken his ball home and not signed a contract.

One for Slav to sort, preferably a young serb international on loan who is left footed and 6 foot three tall.

I think Slav kinda gave the hint that 3-5-2 overlapping centre backs won't be here to stay when he said he doesn't believe smart players only know one way of playing

The board have obviously indicated to Slav that the team was built around 3-5-2 and he's probably analysed them and decided there's enough within the team (with a few additions here and there) to play alternative styles

They both returned pretty much ok. Duff dropped down the pecking order more due to our climb up the leagues and Lake actually had his Zico spell upon his return. The other Lake brother was much more unlucky, widely tipped as a future England star.

Obviously JOC will get an insurance payout.

Does anyone know what sort of cover the club will have when losing such an asset (potentially)?

Sorry if this sounds heartless as I feel dreadfully for Jack but it's still a large hole to fill.

Sad news for the lad. Hopefully he does make a recovery but I just can't see him being the same player. Knee injuries can impact quite badly on mobility. Either way, this is probably the expected peak of his playing career and missing it must be absolutely gutting.
