Duffield broke his leg in season after (v Swindon in Dec 1989) and so did Mike Lake (v Ipswich in Jan 1990). John Gannon broke his arm in April 1990 (v Port Vale)
Also didn’t Rodney Marsh break Tom McAlister’s leg? Seem to recall Denis Law hitting the winner (3-2?) and no one from the Man City team congratulated him. If memory serves ZTommo never recovered - think he was Scotland’s keeper at the time.

I remember Simon Webster breaking his leg away at Mansfield in an FA Cup tie (1-1). Was never the same player.

Keith Kettleborough was another who was a very fine player on the edge of the England squad in the early 60s until he broke his leg and was never the same player again.

Why is everyone convinced his career is over...?
Because that was posted months ago , and my kids jump up and down on a trampoline, but playing professional football is very different, he’s no where to be seen in the latest posts , not training with the squad , and no news about him !
Fuck what a player to lose !

Unless it's confirmed I think we should assume he's still trying to recover.
Whether he ever does is another matter.

Similarly with these rumours of him "suing" the club/putting the blame at Wilders door.
Until anything is properly said it's just rumours. Plus given he "thanks for everything to the gaffer" on Instagram when he left I doubt he isn't likely to do so if this was his thinking.

The last we saw of JOC was him training in early may in those posts and then him abroad I think with his own trainer.
He's been used in the marketing for the season tickets and sales.

I suspect he's just got his own training regime compared to the rest of the squad and SJ will be informed when there is news.

Let hope ur right mate, but the time scale of the injury does not bode well , plus how long will he last if he does return, got to prove himself again as in respect of his fitness.

Oh totally the timescale doesn't bode well at all. And who knows how he would be if he did get back ready to play.
Feels a bit like Dane Whitehouse all over again.

But what I'm meaning is until anything is announced last we saw was him trying to regain his strength and fitness.

Kettleborough was very similar to Didzy, a very good technical player and at times was a joy to watch, after he did his leg he was finished i never saw him make another tackle, same for Ron Simpson, after he broke his leg he was out on the wing (not with broken leg Lol) and never again tackled anybody!

Taking up boxing I have been told.
Wouldn't be surprised. Pretty sure he said he wanted to be a boxer growing up and been doing it since he was a kid.

It seemed to stop him heading the ball as well🤣 I don’t remember Ron Simpson breaking his leg, to be honest.

Dearden scored first, then Law equalised slotting in the loose ball just after March broke McAlister's leg. Woody took over in goal and a Dearden own goal was City's winner. I believe Summerbee fell out with Marsh over the tackle

keith kettleborough was very slight but clever midfielder who could also look after himself on the pitch remember a 4th round cup tie against villa when he got sent off for retalliation over a bad tackle just booted the villa player he was already near the dugouts walking off when the ref sent him off he scored some fantastic long range goals as well great player

He did play again. By that time though, Furphy had brought in Jim Brown and Tommo didn't seem to fit. Maybe lost confidence.
Went to Rotherham and West Ham.
Still see that studs up foul today. And Tommo writhing in agony. Hate Marsh. Eddie Colquhoun went for Marsh, non too successfully though.
Big favourite was MacAlister, probably still is amongst us who were around then.
When he played in that Watney cup match, commentator quoted Big Ed saying he was sure this boy will play for Scotland.
Hold Tommo above other Blades keepers. Another Harris era find, and for nowt.
Silent Blade will correct any of this.

Broke his leg again in Summer 1974 playing in a reserves friendly at Altrincham after diving to catch a ball and falling on the hard pitch

I rated Tom MacAlister the 4th best I ever saw after Hodgy, Burgin and Kelly. I met him shortly after he had recovered from his broken leg when he was the goalkeeper in a Superman type competition (Same as was on BBC in those days, but only amateurs not professionals). It was held at Worksop Sports Centre and competitors had to choose 8 events out of a list of 10. Anyway, to get on with it- One of my choices was football when Tom was the goalie and we had to take 5 penalties and then 3 ,one on one's. Tom saved all 5 of mine- after the 3rd save he came up to me and advised to slow down in between takes. Still missed. However, I was the only one to beat him 3 out of 3 in the one on one. I reckon he felt sorry for me and faked his attempts to save them. Great guy.

Dave Powell was never the same after his injury. From memory Gil Reece‘s performances weren’t adversely affected after his leg break. Could be wrong ?
What does Silent think ?

Time for a BACK FOUR. Without the LCB catalyst there is no point persisting with the same shape. ⚔️
The manager sees the players every day on training. We should have realized that at the point of restart if not, then bit too long after and certainly by the start of last season.

Tom could have been our best ever keeper if not for the sickening injury ,if we keep rammers he will be the best of the lot .and I've watched from hodgy

think it was 66 when gil broke his leg he was like lightning down the left wing before the break john harris played him more centrally in his later years with us often up top with billy dearden and despite being small was fantastic in the air and scored some great headed goals for us

Another op pencilled in. Then we’ll see what the state of play is. No ones given up just yet but it looks bleak.

😞

His diagonal runs to the near post to flick head Woody’s corners were a joy to behold .

Marsh chased a ball to the corner flag at the Kop end. Big Eddie set of after him with the Kop baying. Marsh meekly let him just take the ball.

Not a popular man. Didn’t Frank McLintock get the sack for chinning him after a Sky Sports show?

Your memory is better than mine ST. Thought Eddie went for his throat.

I remember hearing his leg break. Everyone in the ground heard the crack - horrible.

In fairness to Webster, by the time he'd properly recovered we had jumped up two divisions, so it was always going to be hard for him to get back in the team then. He was a top character though, and very important in getting us going in that Bassett style!
