If someone abuses you(r staff) at work ((& they are in a no position where they can realistically respond / reciprocate) I would welcome (if not expect) my gaffer standing up for me.

Where have the punters been “treat(ed) like twats” this season ?

If you’re going to utilise the (fallacious) “boundaries of the law” argument the ‘logical’ outcome would be charging some of the folk on Saturday with Public Order Offences.
The nature & extent of the bile vitriol & abuse hurled by some on Saturday is something no-one should be expected to tolerate in any circumstance.

Somewhat tangentially I’m yet to witness a circumstance where the calling of someone a useless idle cunt enhances subsequent performance
I'm also yet to see where the calling out of paying customers voicing their opinions has led to a more positive work atmosphere. If fans are overstepping their legal boundaries, report them.

'Punters' have been told to stop complaining, sing more, stop pretending they know anything about football etc. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but, in my opinion, the manager woukd be better placed concentrating on his own performance and not rating the paying customers every time things don't go according to plan.

Of course we are disappointed but the reaction of some of our fans are way over the top . We should be looking at the season overall not one match .How many last August would have thought we would be in second place in the league come next April ? How many would have said yes please I will take that ? i BET 99% would have said yes please .What I find and it is something I don't like is when you look across the city and all the shit they are facing they still back the team and the manager even though they have absolutlely f--k all going for them . We could learn something from them .bet if they were in our position they would be shouting from the roof tops about what a great club and team they have got . We have a section of fans who delight in negativity . Wilder is right get behind your team or stop at home .

In my opinion social media magnifies criticism. Thousands of fans are not on social media.
In this instance it wasnt social media but fans at the game voicing their opinion.

I dont support their opinion because we are 2nd and definitely in with a chance of automatics.

You’ve clearly not worked (or forgotten your time) in ‘customer facing’ environments.
Just pop down to your local tonight & tell the bar staff that they are a useless idle cunt when they serve someone else afore you or give you a short measure - pretty sure (.most) landlady’s / landlords will suggest you desist, and, most importantly their staff will appreciate / thank them for it.

What would your response be if the players “ reported” the abuse they received - I suspect just (further) criticism even though we both know this was / is highly unlikely / unrealistic

In essence you’re advocating “free speech” for fans but not the manager albeit you are ‘entitled’ to you opinion of the wisdom of Wilder speaking out - something he acknowledges / recognises right at the start of the video

I think CW has the right to feel disappointed in some of the fan reaction but he should have kept it to himself.

I was disappointed by the result but as has been said on here, we've played like that and won but few fans moaned when we won even though the performance left a lot to be desired.

It would be nice if people could take a balanced view of a win and likewise a balanced view of a defeat. Too much knee jerking in my opinion.
Get what you are saying but it's getting to the end where that one bad result could be costly.

As I've said before, if it's entitled to be disappointing to lose against Oxford... then lock me up and throw away the key because I'm the most entitled of the lot. Crazy thought process.
Aye
Although you’d be locked up for behaving like a twat , not for being disappointed

The comments in Shoutbox are astonishing. Can't name names but I hope some develop a conscience
Shoutbox is a place for very special people. As was Bedlam Hospital in its day. I spent one half of a match in there a few years ago. Fascinating, on an anthropological level. From memory, I described it as a nest of wankers once I had stopped laughing. I'm actually glad its there, the knowledge that it exists provides a lot of positive affirmation for everyone else.

This is nothing new. You only have to look at the fan episode of the "United" documentary in 1990 to see how fans reacted then. Warnock regularly called out fans for moaning when we were doing well. I remember as a kid fans arguing with players on the kop. This was when we were a first division side off the back of two promotions in a row. Bassett got incredible stick at times from the stands but overall people remember it as a really special time. The only time I've ever seen United truly together is in Wilders first spell. It doesn't matter how well the team is doing, people are going to get overly emotional in something they're passionate about.

Social media has obviously made things different but I don't think people have changed or become entitled. Praise or Grumble used to just be called Grumble Hour or whatever and was there for fans to moan following games. The praise section only happened because a Wednesday fan phoned in wanting to talk about how good they were playing.

I saw Peck at FT questioning something as if to say WTF no idea what it was but presume it was someone having a go at the players
A small section of the support was giving it to Hamer at full time according to my young un. Hamer went to have a go back but Peck pulled him away. Only what my youngster told me. I was busy taking in the vitriol on shoutbox.

I agree that Wilder can say what he likes, I've never said he can't. I was replying to your first post stating that it's wrong for fans to be negative and that it makes them entitled. My opinion is that he is far too quick to start rating the performance of supporters. This is far from an isolated incident.

If players are personally abused, the abusers are fair game. I've worked in a lot of customer facing environments and the customer is allowed to show dissatisfaction, within the boundaries my employer sets as allowed

And I'd like to think that Wilder showing Hamer that he has his back with todays Press Conference might result in Gus being happier and playing well on Tuesday.

People forget that Wilder has to "manage" the fan base, as well as the players - everything he does and says will be calculated to try and get the best out of both of those groups - it may not always work of course.

Agree. We lost and it was a poor performance. Criticism is valid but abusing arguably our most talented player is ridiculous. The overreaction has been astounding.

Odd that, because that’s exactly what shoutbox has been doing for weeks on end, yourself included..
If you can find me calling them wankers please find it. Apart from maybe Robbo which I'll accept and stand by.

"Weeks on end" is interesting since I've barely been on since the turn of the year 😂😂

I'm here awaiting evidence, and of course I'm sure you'll be here to bore me with it if it exists.

F in hell, he's our best player, wtf is wrong with people, do they want to push him out of the club?

I'm all for venting a bit of fury in the game when things aren't going well but when the players come over to thank us for our support it's not on, especially when we are second in the table.

The Gus Hamer a ha song needs to reverberate around the Lane tomorrow night

He can say whatever he wants, as can the supporters.
Correct, it just seems wrong that after the horror show of last year coupled with us winning 6 on the trot away from home that some fans should turn so quickly not only against Wilder but also the players.
Everyone is entitled to voice their opinions, especially those that have spent money and travelled to away games to then see a disappointing performance. But having won the previous 6 games the reaction of what is most probably the minority just seems way over the top. I dread to think how they reacted when they got home to find out their mum had burnt their tea.
Wilder is obviously hoping that the majority of fans will see it as him protecting the players and rallying support forTuesday night.

The legendary return of “fans fault”? This is the type of potential hand bangs this forum hasnt seen in a decade. ⚔️👀

That's fair. I just think he comes across as a bit patronising when he has a go at the fans

Like others have said we are still 2nd but we could have been top and in a far better position than we are now.

I think Wilder needs to look closer to home after Saturdays performance rather than having a go at fans.
I watched from afar. The first half commentary was the local BBC radio, who mentioned a number of times how hard and dry the pitch was, and that Oxford had deliberately not watered it prior to the game, presumably to nullify our ability to pass through or around them.

One would assume that we were aware of this, but didn't change our approach accordingly.

Perhaps, as CW recently said, the better approach would have been to play over them, which suggests that Moore might have started, maybe in place of Brewster, to hold up long balls, flick on crosses etc?

Perfect forward defence there, searching through vintage shoutbox texts is nearly as boring as reading yours, so I shall decline your offer, don’t hold your breath….😁
