I would hope the fixtures are played on Saturday as well as the games that should go ahead today, no big disruption to Burnley and Norwich if they play 24 hours later.

Its already postponed today the Burnley match.

It's probably easier for the EFL to let the fixtures go ahead. Saves dealing with fixture re-arrangements, and complaints from managers and fans who have booked hotels and train tickets. I doubt it will be seen as a huge national outrage if people play football two days after the Queen dies.
Yes I agree, but I don’t think they’ll see it like that. Allowing their fixtures to go ahead during the mourning period could be seen as disrespectful so it’s easier for them to cancel the weekend games.

They won’t care about the things you’ve listed unfortunately, games are cancelled in winter an hour or two before kick off.

The only thing I think you’re right with is the re-arrangement of fixtures as the World Cup has effected the schedule already.

Tonight’s game has been postponed 24 hours before kick off. They won’t thing anything of it cancelling tomorrows.

I’m gonna be a miserable fucker this weekend if Blades and kids football get called off. I’ll have to do diy or clean the house or summat.

Economy’s fucked so cancelling a load of events that stimulate people to spend money as well as probably having to refund a load of travel/tickets is a very bad idea in my opinion.

I liked the Queen and have never had any hard feelings towards her whatsoever, unlike some, but I don't understand how it's in any way more respectful to not play a football match. That thinking seems very old fashioned to me.
That's what the monarchy is, old fashioned, outdated and completely out of touch with the real Britain. Hopefully now Charles is King it may spell the end for them. His inability to remain impartial in political matters won't end well.

Wouldn’t class myself as a Royalist really but I’m sad that QEII has died.
For me it doesn’t matter how old she was - it’s a significant moment for the nation to mark appropriately after a 70 year reign.
And what do people often naturally do when there’s any death, never mind a significant one? They gather together.
To share their thoughts, support each other, mark the event, pay respects etc.
I know there’ll be protocol and it’s likely the games will be called off but I’d rather gather with 30,000 others & be part of something memorable & emotional.

I also don't understand how it helps the nation mourn. The vast majority of us will do far more mourning if the match is on, as there will presumably be a minute's silence and the national anthem etc.

As others have said, if there really is a point to it, then we shouldn't be going to work.
I agree, I think it’s possibly because you’ll see people celebrating & cheering etc on tv in a period that is for national mourning.

That’s the reason they’ll cancel them imo

All horse racing, cricket and golf called off for today. Further announcement on the weekend schedules out soon.

I want the match to happen but yeah a 3 week break may benefit us
No it won’t benefit us, look back at the last 2 seasons and look at what happens. We are on a good roll now so the last thing United wont is a another 3 week break including the World Cup.We need to keep playing and get way in front of the other teams before the World Cup

Premiership Rugby Union still on tonight. Can't see any reference to it being postponed yet, although that decision will be forthcoming later today I suppose when all sporting matters are made public as to the short term implications.

The first games back would be B'Ham & QPR both tough opposition. Birmingham has signed a few recently too. I don't think next week's games will be called off but I don't see tomorrows going ahead

Clubs have tweeted tonight's matches are cancelled.

I hope all sport is cancelled this weekend. It might be a generational thing but I’m in my 60’s and have no wish to do anything jolly at the moment- a very sad day for our nation.
It's not a generational thing, I'm in my 60s and I have a complete opposite view to yours. When my mother died on a Sat morning they didn't cancel the Blades match and as my children said to me life goes on there's nothing you can do until Monday. I went to the match and in evening contemplated my mother's life. Don't cancel anything it's a personal decision if people don't wish to attend events but don't spoil things for others who may want to attend.

who isa going to teach the footballers the new anthem, and will they be able to do it

Agree on the day of death...as a general rule most things stop.

However you don't just announce "close the country down for 8 days of mourning"
It's essential and common sense to look at the implications.

Cancelling 1 match isn't a disaster but this supposed to be 8 days of mourning.
So that would mean each club needs to postpone 3 matches each.
What happens with Coventry, that would mean having to fit in 6 extra matches in a World Cup year when there are few spare weeks.
Do you ask them to play 4 games a week for a few weeks or extend the season, can it be extended?

Also there's the European competition next week, how are those matches re-arranged.
There's also the financial cost, even more imoportant with clubs struggling financially after covid
and finally there's the question of how you show respect.
Should a country come to a stand still or take a leaf out of the queens book with a "keep calm and carry on" attitude.
Obviously on the day of the funeral most things will stop, that is the time to grieve properly not the days 8 days before.

Should all football matches be cancelled, what about non-league and amateur league in the parks.
What about closing cinema's, pubs, night-clubs, how far do you take showing respect?

Today you can bet the discussion will be how to show respect with the least disruption.
As in many situation suspect the solution will probably be some form of compromise.

Care to expand? Not sure republicanism with a democratically elected head of state is to blame for all modern woes.

Yes, I'll expand.

There is absolutely nothing to celebrate about modern Britain, we're destined to become a failed state within my lifetime and life is going to be significantly worse by every metric for our children and theirs.

In the United States for example, life expectancy has fallen for the first time in recorded history, the primary factor being suicide. A trend that is growing to a greater or lesser extent throughout the western world.

Any governing principle that once unified the nation state has largely disappeared, and society is more atomised, more selfish, more nasty and vindictive than ever before. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, we can't disagree without being violently disagreeable.

If some of us have reverence for certain traditions, it's because that's all there is left, and those too will be a faded memory soon enough.

None of the above were caused by having a constitutional monarchy, and none will be fixed by electing some cunt in a suit every four or five years either.

I'm very much a Royalist and upset at the news. I think there ahould be a period of mourning/celebration - but I think ERII would not want this weekend's games postponed - people have bought tickets and made arrangements - maybe even booked a day off without pay. 10 days is too much. We love our Queen, but the Brits don’t need that much time to wallow in self pity. 4 days will be enough, Thursday to Sunday next week, then make the Friday a regular Bank Holiday.
We can’t all go to London waving flags outside the Palace, so a minutes silence and belting out the National Anthem at every stadium tomorrow would be a brilliant send off, and a chance to pay our respects.
But I think pressure will mount on the EFL to cancel, unfortunately.

And what exactly has the Queen done to stop any of this happening? Sat in her life of luxury and watched it unfold. I don't know how we're going to cope without her. I hope the country doesn't become bitterly divided now she's gone.

Stock Exchange open despite trading being one of the things that is supposed to be immediately suspended...
Quelle surprise, you can’t get in the way of a good chance to make a profit.

I'm hoping the game goes ahead. It's a significant moment in our history with many in mourning, but each venue should be able to adequately and respectfully acknowledge the occasion. Postponing or cancelling shouldn't be the default considering the huge costs, disruption and potential inconsistencies across entertainment sectors.

From a Blades perspective, I also don't agree we'd benefit from an extended recovery period; more than ever we've become a club with a high performance-inertia.

RIP Ma 'am.
