Tonight’s game has been postponed 24 hours before kick off. They won’t thing anything of it cancelling tomorrows.
Agree on the day of death...as a general rule most things stop.
However you don't just announce "close the country down for 8 days of mourning"
It's essential and common sense to look at the implications.
Cancelling 1 match isn't a disaster but this supposed to be 8 days of mourning.
So that would mean each club needs to postpone 3 matches each.
What happens with Coventry, that would mean having to fit in 6 extra matches in a World Cup year when there are few spare weeks.
Do you ask them to play 4 games a week for a few weeks or extend the season, can it be extended?
Also there's the European competition next week, how are those matches re-arranged.
There's also the financial cost, even more imoportant with clubs struggling financially after covid
and finally there's the question of how you show respect.
Should a country come to a stand still or take a leaf out of the queens book with a "keep calm and carry on" attitude.
Obviously on the day of the funeral most things will stop, that is the time to grieve properly not the days 8 days before.
Should all football matches be cancelled, what about non-league and amateur league in the parks.
What about closing cinema's, pubs, night-clubs, how far do you take showing respect?
Today you can bet the discussion will be how to show respect with the least disruption.
As in many situation suspect the solution will probably be some form of compromise.
