Is Lundstram

He isn't Paul Coutts, he's John Lundstram. He was really good on Boxing Day - bar one or two misplaced passes - but it was great to see him score. His energy was excellent and he's starting to find that time on the ball that he previously missed.

Plays like that every week, we will not miss Coutts.

Simply brilliant.

looks to me as though Lundstram has lost a few pounds. He looks a lot trimmer than he did a few weeks ago.

I like lundstram more than i did coutts after as many games.. not trying to say lunny is as good as coutts but coutts was certainly a slow starter playing for us!

Personally I think comparing Lundstram to Coutts is doing him a disservice. He isn’t Coutts and he never will be because he’s a different type of player. I’d prefer it if we just let him get on with things and rated his performances for what they are rather than outlining how they compare to what Coutts did for us.

Edit: and another thing. Can we please stop counting how many times he gives the ball away during each game. Fleck gives the ball away and he doesn’t get the same treatment. In fact all players give the ball away from time to time, even Coutts, regardless of what the song claims.

Yes he is a different player to Coutts and given his age, can potentially be better than Coutts. But at this moment in time we need Lundstram to pick up the Coutts baton and run with it. Simply because that calm selfless hand on the ”tiller” makes It a lot easier for the other 10 players to do their jobs.

Different type of player to coutts. Actually think he is better off the ball than coutts, however no where near coutts in terms of distribution and attacking play

I agree we need him to step in but we don’t ‘need’ him to be the exact same type of player that Coutts was.

I think he had a good game overall but I don’t put him in the same class as Coutts tbh. He still gave it away carelessly at times and could have got us into trouble. But he’s come on a lot and credit to him. He should only get better but a long way to go before he’s ready to replace Coutts imo.

He needs to be the best John Lundstram he can be not the best Paul Coutts clone. Allow him to be the former and we may have a real player on our hands, expect him to be the latter and we will be expecting him to be something he’s not and shouldn’t try to be.

You said it much better then I did

My first impressions of him during hardly any game time at all was that he looked a bit slow in the turn and looked sideways most of the time, bit daft making early opinions really on 10 mins here and there but I guess you just get lured into forming an opinion. I think hes been great the last few games, he improves every time I see him. Seems to have now become more confident at going past players and developed a turn of pace. He' just got to keep those levels of performance up now and we'e got a great player.

Its not rocket science that given a good run in the side and with fans now no getting on his back that he's showing what he can do .read Bob bookers book .

Going a little against the grain here but I think Lundstram is rapidly growing into the Coutts role. For me, he sometimes tries the world class pass when a simple pass would be the better option but I also think with Fleck back, he will have the simple option more often. I think he does more work in both boxes than Coutts and if he does continue to improve his distribution and decision making (which he has over the last few weeks), he could become a real player in that role.

I have to say, I really can't remember a management team who have improved players so much, even those who are at an age where most would say they won't get any better. Coutts, Freeman, Lundstram, Basham and Clarke to name a few have all become much better players under this coaching team. It's good to see.

Moving on, would Lundstram and Coutts be able to play in the same midfield?

Geuninely Coutts-esque today, although he did get caught in possession once in the second half. He's growing into the role, if there's any justice we've heard the last of the Lundstram hate.
I had that thought when i saw him following a pass he had just made, being there in case it needed to come back.

Although the song says differently, Coutts occasionally did this as well (less frequently granted). I can remember one shocker at Elland Road that could've easily cost us a goal.

I believe your boy, the utterly inept Montgomery, was a bit careless from time to time...

...he always gave the ball awaaaaay.

He's an absolute monster of a man too. Kept the ball in the corner to waste time (god knows why as we were 3-0 up) and the Sunderland players were just bouncing off him.

I realise that football is very black and white for some and Coutts never misplaces a pass, Montgomery never completed a pass and Jamal Blackman never makes a save. I prefer to see it as shades of grey though.

I still find it hard to believe that a player could be so lucky and a series of coaches and managers so blind that an "inept" footballer could get paid to play somewhere in the region of 500 games as a professional, some of them in the "greatest league in the World".

I watched a few of his u19 England vids on YouTube and the lad was the main man in midfield, the captain and the penalty taker. A lot of responsibility was afforded to him in that set up and that tells you a lot about his character. Lunny was never going to be playing in league one forever and lucky for us we've got Wilder and Knill who can spot Real potential and hopefully the lad makes it to the top with us.

If he can keep playing and keep improving, he is going to become a top player, I am absolutely delighted to see how his confidence has grown in the last two games, he is only 23 as well

It's much better that fans compare him to Coutts (even if he doesn't quite come up to the mark) than comparing him to Dean f*****g Hammond !!!

(Come on....... own up.... Who did that? - I can't remember who it was but someone on here definitely did!!!)
