This is quite interesting. Particularly the part about managers not wanting to show weakness.
Here is a good example when Bobby Robson was in his early days as Ipswich manager. I bet Bill Baxter and Tommy Carroll told a different story about the bust up

Stamping his authority also came at a price; with Bobby feeling captain, Bill Baxter was too old and Tommy Carroll demanding more money from the club, Bobby decided to leave them out the team for the game the next day. Not happy with this Baxter and Carroll ripped down the team sheet, only to be confronted by the manager, after an exchange of a few choice words a punch up ensued with the rest of the team having to break it up. Showing their support for Bobby the team ordered the two rebels to change in the groundsman’s shed for the following games. With the support of the chairman, the two players were straight out the door and were to never play for Ipswich again.

He was always of the opinion that he only wanted good press and also said that slagging someone in public might deter future managers from signing him.

Butler never commented either even after his move, quite probably for the same reason. No good would come of it. The Clough thing is history and I hope it doesn't become relevant again- it only will if we go into a tailspin and those with rosetinted glasses look fondly back on NC. He is nothing to do with SUFC and never will be again so this subject needs a decent burial.

The confidence and belief is high... Clough's negativity ran throughout the squad he could only get them up for playing in quarter-finals etc. the team only worked well when we were counter-attacking
