If Wilder gets us straight back up again....

A coupe of things:
  • People can improve through experience - Wilder will have learnt a lot from this season and is very unlikely to make the same mistakes again if he gets another chance. He's a bloody good manager, not an idiot. If he can get us back up, he'll deserve another opportunity.
  • Recruitment strategy is partly to blame for our current position and that's not all on Wilder. As others have said, we've put too much reliance on youth with a view to high resale value. We've not adjusted the wage structure enough to allow us to attract players with Premier League experience. However this conservative approach, has probably put us in a relatively strong position for next season (certainly in terms of finance)

It was the only approach we could take because PA has no money. Our wage bill is Income minus running costs minus transfer fees. It’s that simple. He’s got so little money he had to borrow to pay for the stadium etc. In an ideal world we’d have spent what Villa have spent over the last two seasons but we’re not in an ideal world. It’s the same with every club outside the big six who have global income streams and champions league money to add to their big pots. Look at Wolves, spend less this season, finish lower. And every season, clubs like Southampton, Brighton, Burnley etc pray that the three clubs going up will be the three that go down because, if not, it could be one of them.

Do you trust him to keep us up and stick with him or do you try and get someone else in who has more tactical nous for the Premier League?

May seem a bit harsh if that were to happen but for me, Chris, like Warnock previously, just doesn't seem cut out to effectively manage in the top flight. Championship and below - great, just not really at the races when it comes to the big league.

Discuss.
So in this hypothetical scenario he gets us promoted and you want us to sack him? Are you fucking sure? 😂

If Wilder gets us up again. Not only should he be knighted and given the freedom of Sheffield, plus a life times supply of Peroni. The club should also keep a list of all the ungrateful doubters on this forum and ban them for life from Bramall Lane
What if he doesnt get us promoted ?

Why oh why are there still people who just forget the guy got us finishing in the top half of the best league in the world last year? AND they have the cheek to suggest he’s another Warnock. Fucking hell.
Warnock’s a better manager than the eight that followed him, before Wilder. We couldn’t wait to get rid of old big nose and then watch him get other clubs promoted whilst we fucked about in L1.

All the ahem 'democrat' lefties on here will be proud of you for that.

You're only allowed an opinion if it's the correct one etc. What if he doesn't get us back up and ends up getting sacked? Will you then be banned from Bramall Lane instead? No, thought not.

Still ban em.

I'm no democrat, authoritarian all the way when it's my regime

I would say stick with Wilder but I see no evidence that he has learned anything in the sense that we have not adapted our approach in:

Recruitment
Tactics
Coaching
etc.

If we don't we will inevitably fail again in my opinion and he risks being seen as another Warnock.
I’d say each of those things have evolved as he’s gone on.

Recruitment has varied from window to window, we’ve had young and British, young and European, European loans, someone from China, PL loans. It’s only people who think they know this magic list of players we should have signed based on YouTube clips and computer games who convince themselves he hasn’t tried different strategies.

Tactics, we play in a completely different way now to how we did at the start of last season. It’s based on personnel and confidence levels in my view. We start with 5-3-2 and adapt as a game plays out almost weekly. Again other people always know better.

Coaching, you really have no idea about what goes on at Shirecliffe and all this about ‘we need a coach’ is based on Jonathan Woodgate going and coaching another team apparently. I certainly don’t know how we coach our players and I very much doubt that you do.

It would be absolutely nuts, and a piss take of epic proportions, to stick with Wilder if your view is that he shouldn’t manage us in the Premier League if he takes us back up. IMAGINE letting him go if he were to get us promoted.

In principle it's not so daft at all. It happens regularly in other countries. My own club in Spain got rid of the manager who gained two promotions in 3 seasons a-la-Wilder to take them into La Liga (the real one, not the Wednesday one). Mind you, that's proven to be a feckin stupid decision as it turns out.

Anyway, I digress. Surely if you were at Middlesbrough and Warnock took them up you wouldn't want to trust him with the 1st Division? Likewise McCarthy at Cardiff.

It's hardly the case that Wilder has shown he can't manage in this league - unless last season was a Bobby Ewing type dream?

The big question though is why I'm replying to such an obviously hypothetical situation?

This......if you look at some of the names CW has been interested in but couldn't afford it might suggest that larger budgets would help secure some of these names that slipped through the recruitment net.
I don’t think it’s because we couldn’t afford them Iiyb ( well perhaps not all) but as been quoted many times it’s the wages. But your right of course. Tomato - Tomatoes.

Stick with him but appoint a DoF to oversee transfers and expand the scouting team

On this day in 1587 Mary, Queen of Scots and ex Queen of France lost her head.
Let's not be stupid and even consider losing ours eh ......... ;)

I'm 36.
To put it in simple terms..
We will never equal last seasons position in my lifetime.

Wider gets every attempt at the Premiership, because without him we simply won't be there anyway.
Indeed. And how long was it before people were getting the knives out this season? 7 games? Fewer?

Some of our fans should be ashamed and embarrassed at how quickly they turned on one of our greatest ever managers.

Agree mate. Wages are the single biggest impediment to securing better quality. Of course fees matter, but so far all we've done is surprise ourselves by spending 20 million approx more than once. We're a long way off competing for Prem survival if this remains our standard. Of course I agree with balancing the books, but our owners are barely at the races when it comes to spending the type of money we'll need to spend if we really want to do well whenever we return to the Prem (this assumes that you agree we're going down?)

Problem is, if the prince cannot provide the funds himself, then he will need serious investors. Or a possible sale of the club to rich owners. Either scenario, would they let wilder spend the money. I’m not sure they would.

We're pissing the night away,
we're pissing the night away

We get knocked down, but we get up again,
there's nothing gonna keep us down.

We are the Blades, and we get up again,
there's nothing gonna keep us down.

Beginning to think there are signs HRH doesn’t. He’s u turned on JTW and CW saying he disagrees, maybe long honeymoon is over
What worries me is at the end of last season the Club knew O'Connell needed an op and they did fuck all about it why? And please don't mention Jack Robinson because he's way out of his depth at this level!

As posted above on recruitment, he rarely get his top targets, always 2nd 3rd sometimes 4th options , not gonna have a pop at the prince because with the level of his wealth he’s done what he can ... but we need a bigger budget to not only compete but just to stay up !

It's not just about money, although I agree it's a significant part.

For example for our number 2 goalkeeper we could have got someone like:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danijel_Subašić

Yet we have Fotheringham, which makes absolutely no sense.

+1 for the finished 9th comments.

The exceptions prove the rule; we don't look enough for players outside the UK. I don't think I know better about tactics, I have my opinion, and although we tinker with the formation it has fundamentally remained the same.

Coaching, well I do think that someone like Burke could use someone like Duncan Ferguson as a mentor but we don't seem to have that in our set up. A fresh voice could do wonders, look at Graeme Jones at Newcastle.

Of course we stick with Wilder next season and if he gets us promoted of course we stick with him in the PL next time. To be honest as long as he keeps us top 6 Championship he can keep trying.

If we keep playing like we have done for MOST of this season with no advanced forward midfielder (that's a bloody big hole there guys) then we seriously underestimate the quality of the Championship and we will struggle. Mid table next Christmas and things get very uncomfortable.

My one single request of CW is a change of tactics that gets us on the front foot and attacking like we used to do. Personally I like the way Brentford and others play. If we can't win anything at least let's have a go at battering sides and properly entertain the crowd.

I'm not in the "Wilder for Life" camp at the moment, but I sincerely hope he becomes a legend, with his story continuing next season. UTB!

Same problem - managers get you promoted way beyond what your financial outlay deserves, then get measured unfairly against the extreme position they took the club to.

We should rightfully question the way we’ve spent plenty of money without improving the team. But we shouldn’t forget that ALL our signings were second best. The initial targets, who we didn’t land because of wages, have gone in to be successful in the premier league.

When we can’t even afford the cream of the division below, from where there’s a huge gulf in class, we shouldn’t then look for scapegoats when our relatively paltry outlay fails to keep us in the division above.

I agree with most of that. But I’m more worried about next season.

I’m not convinced Berge, Brewster, Ramsdale and Burke aren’t terrible wastes of money. I’ve seen nothing to suggest they’re good players. There’s a whole host of reasons that they may well yet prove to be, but if not we’re in line for a huge financial hit.
