will you 'eternal optimists' accept that the playoffs are beyond us? I'm just curious because the bigger the gap seems to become, the more confident and up-beat you seem to become (god bless you). It's not that I'm knocking it, I just don't understand it???!!!!

If we dip again on Wednesday SURELY you have to admit that the season is finished. It's really depressing. It's like a really dedicated bunch of fans deluding themselves that we've not been completely incompetent as a club and blown it.

Even if we were to win we would still have so much to do!

If we finish seventh then I'll accept that we won't be in the play-offs, but until we are mathematically incapable of finishing sixth or higher what's wrong with a little optimism? I will admit the season is finished when we have no more games to play.

If we lose at cardiff I'll (regretfully) concede that we wont make the Playoffs, but the season will still be far from over.
There's still the chance of us relegating W*dn*sday for us to play for!

Because the thin layer of optimism is screening the apparent problems the club has and is delaying the inevitable departure of certain individuals.

Essentially what I'm saying is.........it gives the club deniability that we're shite because despite all our problems "we're still in with a shout"

LUNACY

Why is my optimism screening the problems the club has, and why is it delaying the departure of anyone concerned?

I'm far from happy with the current situation and I believe Blackwell has had his time, but why not have a little faith if we are still technically capable of finishing sixth or higher?

If the positions were reversed, would you be saying the same? or would you be tipping Cardiff to catch us?

It's not over till it's impossible.

Would you be happy if the players/management came out in the press and said they've given up? Why should we?

It's not about give up it's about being realistic. I don't care what the management says as long as they're honest. I'm not one of these supporters who wants the manager/players to come out and bullshit their way through interviews.

There is nothing wrong with the team striving and pushing. My point was not to suggest that they give up. I just cant understand why those concerned are tormenting themselves with the hope that we might be able to do it if......

I dont see the point when we are so far off the pace.

Because we might just do it? Because holding on to the slightest glimmer of hope is part of being a supporter? Because there's fuck-all on telly on a Saturday afternoon?

I can't understand why those concerned are damning us before the end.

I can really. But as George Michael said, you've gotta have faith. Shortly before he tried to suck an LAPD officer's cock. Allegedly.:D

It's not eternal optimism for me. I've accepted that changing things now would be pointless and for that reason we may as well get the best out of the situation we're in. Win at Cardiff and we're right in the mix. Yes it looks unlikely but so what, what's football without believing you can do it? I've seen dafter things happen, and there's still a lot of football to be played so why not get behind the team (even if you don't want to support the manager) and give it a good go, maybe we can surprise ourselves.

Too right. Blackie needs to change his policy of not blooding youngsters on Sunday and play a team full of them.

What are you pair of spacktards on about? A Saturday spent with Lord Jeff of Hartlepool is well worth the time, If only to see him baiting Scouse Conk!

I think Shoreham was referring to non-football related programmes. Yes Jeff and his panel are good informative entertainment on saturdays but not everyone has the luxury of sky my friend.

Fortunately I do but that's beside the point

Who he?

Jeff and his idiot savant mates, or even just idiots, are okay, but every single Saturday with them would be more than a little annoying to say the least.
SEB doesn't watch it anyway, he'll be out shopping and generally doing as he's told. Cleaning and shit.:D

SSN is available on Freeview. :)

We're also still "technically capable" of finishing in the bottom three, but the likelihood of that is pretty small as well - almost as small as finishing in the play-offs.;)

Actually you're right it is, cos I used to watch it on there. Although my freeview receiver at the time was shite and the signal for SSN used to go whenever it rained..........so for about 70% of the football season :D

6th place last year, (Preston) finished on 74 points. We would have to win 7 of the last 8 to equal that. We all know that aint gonna happen so as far as I am concerned it doesn't matter if we win lose or draw at Cardiff we aren't going to be involved in the play-offs this season.

Interestingly third-bottom last year, (Norwich) went down with 46 points. The Pigs are already on 40 and Palace are on 39 so presuming Plymouth and Posh have too much to make up the third bottom club could well be relegated with over 50 points this season!

The same post over and over again.

Agree totally with Torrix on the first point. We just have way too much ground to make up and even a Cardiff administration would probablly see us blow it to one of the other chasing teams.

Regarding the latter point about relegation I was looking at the table saturday night and thinking the same thing. Although I think this has happened before. For some reason I seem to remember Gillingham (under Stan Ternant) going down with over 50 points???

Can any of our resident stattos confirm that??? :D

and where else could you hear such classic quotes as;

"neither team haven't went close yet Jeff"

and

"goal Jeff........there was loads of 'em in the box and it's been scrambled in. I'm not sure what one done it yet"

as spouted by King Merse in recent weeks.

Too much marching powder addled his brain poor lad.

So you're saying, last seasons total for the play offs will stand, but the relegation total won't? Logical

I think you will see a lower total for the play offs, around 69 points.

And a higher total for relegation, approx 52 points.

It's like listening to Stephen Fry in comparison to Dean Windass though ;)

Exactly what I think, I reckon the Play-Off points total will be the lowest ever. I just can't see a side putting together a decent run.

Except us

I'm not an eternal optimist but I like watching the Blades. I went on my own to Donny, got piss wet through, burnt my mouth on a nuclear hot pie and by 3-15pm when everyone was singing Blackwell sort it maybe I'd made the wrong decision. After all I could have been 'enjoying myself' in front of the telly.

Was it the rendering of 'Were you there when Monty scored?' or We've got Jordan Jordan Stewart (pause quizzically) at left back at left back. Or was it 'They try to get the ball past Nyron.........and he say no no no or was it someone singing Crocodile Shoes when Glenn Little came on that improved my mood. The crowd went beserk forever when we scored and the Donny fans sat there miserable and left early. It might have been different; like 3-0 to them at half time or we might have snatched a win at the end. That is what watching football and supporting a team is all about, highs and lows.
No we are not going up, Blackwell will not be manager of the year, we've got no money, we've sold the kids, we've wasted opportunities and been shafted in the process and don't get me started on Robson. But there is always tomorrow and the day after .......and we might just beat Cardiff.

If we lose to Cardiff then realistically we are probably out of it.

Realistically we have been in the playoff places only very sporadically this season, and not for very long at any point.

However..

I see no point in declaring that we are out of it, even if we do lose. Those who are keen for us to simply admit failure should remember what they frequently say when we go 2-0 down.. 'the players' heads dropped', or 'the players gave up, it's not good enough'.

If we expect the players and management to keep fighting and keep the faith until the end then so should we, otherwise we would be hypocrites, no?

If you lose the belief then you've already lost imo.
