Howard or Long?

I think this is actually the weakest area of the squad. Howard didn't convince me too many times last season and made a lot of mistakes which cost goals and points (although he was a bit exposed by a makeshift and unsettled defence). In an ideal world he wouldn't be a first choice keeper. However, Long hasn't convinced in the times he's been in the first team and may still be too inexperienced to rely on throughout a hopefully successful season.

I've voted Long purely because he can still improve and is to some degree an unknown quantity after his long time out and loan spells. Howard for me should never be more than backup. It's a tough one though.

Both are not a save 12 point a season goalkeeper IMO. Either Adkins signs a CB to play at the side of Collins , a new goalkeeper or both . Is Howard fit enough ? , is Long good enough ? . Both have suffered due to the inept back 4 in front of them previously , Long was inexperienced , so there is mitigating circumstances.

Still have a couple of miising links , which i am sure Adkins is well aware of.

It's got to be Howard, yes he did have a few hiccups last season, he will know he has to prove that he is good enough to start a match I believe he will do a good job this season. UTB
 
I think we happen to have two very competent goalies now Long's voice has broken.
Howard to start but feel much better about Long from what I've seen pre season.
 
I will be happy if we have them both for the season, however if Long ends up going out on loan and we have to bring someone in, he should be better than Howard. Mad science

Not seen either pre season, but from watching them both over the last two seasons I wouldn't want both of em. Must have been a huge improvement to have confidence that they are competent IMHO

Of course it's all about opinions but Howard is as good as you'll get at this level, Long may well be in time if he continues to improve.

Absolutely. And I'm not sure those hiccups were that bad. There was a sequence of long shots that went in but several were unstoppable and at least one of the others wobbled like party balloon.

Somehow these transformed into shots-my-granny-could've-saved.

For me he's another confidence player and needs all the support and encouragement we can give him.

Hopefully Adkins can do something about Long's deference in the box, may even require a psychologist.
 

There might not be any decision to make if Howard can't stay fit. He's had thigh problems from kicking the ball and had a problem with his back last season, so can he be our reliable number one?

As for Long, we won't know for sure if he's good enough with out a run of games. I'd rather bring in a first choice goalie and loan Long out or sell Howard
 
Howard has cost us goals & points in too many games, however I don't think any of us know if Long is yet or will ever be good enough for the top of this level and the one above, so will have to go with NA to make the right decision.
If he does go with Howard he needs to find a level of performance and consistency we have yet to see from him.
 
We're playing away on Saturday. We have just "unveiled" our new away kit (as opposed to change strip) so obviously we will wear it despite there not being a kit clash with Gilligham's blue...whichever goalkeeper we choose will look fuckin stoopid in Orange,red,blue and any other bits of trim they came up with.
 
Howard is the better keeper, He at least tries to control his penalty area during set pieces and give instructions to his defenders.

Long can make some good saves but never fills me with any sort of confidence that he controls the defenders in front of him.

Long has been solid at this level in the past, you seem to also have a short memory.

It's irrelevant anyway, you can't keep saying Howard used to be consistent when any and every shot from outside the box is flying past him.
 
Got to be howard already been mentioned about his experience. goalkeepers blunders never go unnoticed think n/a would have brought another keeper in if he didnt trust howard think he will excel.this season under new regime

George long has played about 30 first team games less than Howard in their careers. So that goes out the window.
 
TBH I don't think either of them are good enough Howard certainly isn't he has had more clubs than than Arnold Palmer and has failed to hold the #1 spot anywhere until last season and at his age he will not get better. Long on the other hand might improve but if a player hasn't made it by the time he is 20 well frankly he never will keeper or not, I don't get all this bollocks that keepers peak later than outfield players they play longer for the simple reason they don't need to run about. New keeper needed for me then sell Howard if anyone is dumb enough to pay for his services.
