Or the other defenders were telling him what to do as hes not a defender.

Yes that's probably it Jehovah!.....

For what it's worth I have nothing against Howard and think he could do a perfectly good job in goal, just as he did last season.

What I do take issue with is the continual rubbishing by some board users of the young lad's in the team who have come up through the academy. I almost get the feeling they want some of the lads to cock up or play poorly just to vindicate their negative stance?

But whatever floats their boat!

So because we don't rate him ,just because he has come through the academy and hes 21 (is that young ?) we should just praise him and let him continue to cost us points ? It has nothing to do with any of that ,some of us can see that he simply isn't good enough for this level of football in our opinion.

Although it's 18 months down the line, it's worth remembering that after Clough had been in charge for a couple of months, we were still around the relegation zone, with Long being the first choice keeper. After losing 3-0 to Crewe, Long was dropped for Howard for the Fulham away match. The defence suddenly seemed more stable (despite Long seeming to make more saves) and we then stormed up the table. The change of keeper could have been a coincidence but I suspect not.

You could equally say that the removal of Hill, who was replaced with Harris after the Crewe game, could have been the key there. Nobody would deny that his confidence was clearly low then though, and keepers will go through phases where they lose confidence. People only seem to remember the low-on-confidence Long, while excusing Howard's errors as somehow all due to injury.

It's weird that not many have actually acknowledged the tremendous skill and composure that was shown by Hernandez when he took the ball on. The way he nodded it into his own path from a lob was a staggering show of ability.

It's just one of those things, Hernandez is a top notch player with great skill and things like that happen when you play against those sorts of players. I'd be quite certain you wouldn't find any league one player finish with such finesse and ability at the lane or anywhere for that matter.

There was absolutely nothing Long could do about that goal.

Completely agree
That is a player Hull signed for £10,000,000 and that is the type of goal £10,000,000 gets you. Sheer class.

Don't think Long has done anything in pre season to make me think he's a worse option than Howard, and with his age and Howard's performances at the back end of the season (coupled with virtually no pre season) there's no real choice to be made. It has to be George.

Spot on, and people seem to dismiss his performances for Motherwell as a flash in the pan or lucky.
That's a huge pressure game, the most pressure he'll have ever faced. The difference between relegation and staying up - and he propelled himself to the next level. He grew up somewhere inbetween those 2 games.

Could Howard have put in that performance? I suggest not.

So in Wilson's last season, Long kept 22 clean sheets.

Howard can't save long shots, no longer comes out for crosses (which was the benefit over Long) and his distribution could be better. Everytime Long made it was he's too young and not good enough. I think people need to start counting Howard's. If we work back, let's start with Swindon...

If Long goes out on loan, then please sign a new number 1.

They are both, on their day, very good keepers – with Howard currently ahead in my opinion when both on top of their games. But both are inconsistent. Howard, at his age, is unlikely to significantly improve in my opinion. Long, with appropriate development (which, contrary to Pinchy's straw-manning, does not mean losing points for the hell of it), may become a better and more consistent keeper. Who knows, that may happen this season. Howard is certainly not as light years ahead that some are suggesting.

Howard ended the season looking dodgy from long range shots. That masked a long period of good performance. Long has been wank for his entire career with us. I'm totally amazed that more than 41% of forum members would vote for him.

"Give him a run"..........fuck me. :(

100%! Howard was prone to costly mistakes but gave the back four confidence, Long isn't just a poor keeper but he seems ago be a nervous wreck.

No surprise here. Lets hear the Long clappers now.

I hold my hands up, was wrong. Long looked out of his depth. He never looked to command his six yard box, let along his area. He flapped at balls, he looked terrified whenever he was challenged. Kicking and distribution was poor.

I don't think Howard is a long term solution but long was atrocious.

Howard might be average at the is level, but is still way way better than Long at this level at this moment in time.

Long might, with experience, be the better keeper - but at this moment in time the decision to play Long is wrong.

We all have our opinions and with hindsight, Howard was quality when he had a SETTLED defence in front of him.

THE PROBLEM IS NOW AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN THE BACK 4, AND IN PARTICULAR THE CENTRAL DEFENDERS.

Change them quickly, or our season will be over by October - some of us have warned of this problem for a while - and yes it's only an opinion, but If you are happy with the defence then make your case for it.

Today confirms it for me that George Long will never ever be good enough for Sheffield United. I have been prepared to give him more time as he is a youngster from the academy, and allow him to develop but even after a loan away to, firstly Oxford (?) where by all accounts was terrible then Motherwell (where again he was terrible bar a few games).
It is clear that he just hasn't developed as expected. Time to cut loose and get in a good solid keeper with Howard as backup (as he has been for the majority of his career....which at what...29?/30? Says a lot).

I think I'm going to have to change my mind on this one. If there's any money left after bringing in some centre halves, I'd ship Long out and get another keeper in with Howard as backup.

Good old Local George. He had two good games for Motherwell so he's left all his glaringly obvious faults behind him.

There's Bladey Bladeness all over this. My favourite is that we should choose him because he's an "unknown quantity". Yes, that's certainly the way to choose a goalkeeper. I think it's known as the "Lee Baxter" theory...

"I'm absolutely delighted we've got Nigel Adkins".
Pinchy, Jun 15, 2015

This might not go down too well eh Pinchy?

Long’s lack of experience really told against Gillingham. He’s not kicked on in the way many of us hoped but he’s still very young for a keeper and for me is worth having around. He’s recovered somewhat in the cup games. I think that’s his role for this season unless Howard gets injured.

He could still come good 2-3 years down the line. It’s taken Howard til about 27-28 to get a run of games as a number 1. Long is still only 21, has a lot to learn, but for me, shouldn’t be written off yet.

6 goals conceded in 2 home games... does anyone think Adkins will rotate GK again?

See Fulwood post 8th August , which he beat me to it.

Get the back four sorted out , which is the issue . Steady , solid , reliable CH pairing , and we would not be discussing the goalkeeper.

Howard was solid with a good back four . He deserves to not be dropped.

Long would be shot and could not cope , especially after the defending in last two games .

. Unfortunately we all know the situation at the moment , and as a team , we could be more exposed on Sunday , at Bradford.
