I remember the 1st home game that season,an exciting 4-4 v Birmingham,3 days later a 4-1 win v the pigs(steel city challenge trophy!)
Happy days
Rip Howard

Remember Birmingham brought some absolute animals in their support that day. For about 3 or 4 seasons after that there was loads of trouble after every game with Blues.

RIP. His initial stint after Bassett was very good, with the FA Cup win over Arsenal the obvious highlight. Ultimately, despite the investment the next season it ended in disappointment and a terribly negative playoff final. Didn't adequately replace Cowans and Ablett, a big part of his initial success, as Spackman & Sandford weren't at the same level. Big investment in his key players came a bit too late in the end, and I wasn't gutted to see him leave. Not wholly unlike Clough in some respect.

Think he was more ambitious in his style than Clough and his recruitment was much more measured.

RIP HK

Wouldn't disagree with that. We really should have gone up that year though. JAF is an obvious plus, though Holdsworth was his best long-term signing in my opinion. I was fairly young when Kendall was appointed – quite possible my view of him would have been different had I been a bit older.

He was a great player and a great manager. He won championships and cups and did so by playing the game as it was meant to be played. The Everton team he captained were quite superb with Ball, Harvey and Kendall a sublime midfield. He then produced a magnificent Championship winning Everton as manager.

His best days were behind him by the time he came to SUFC but in his first season we played exciting, attractive proper football. What a refreshing pleasure it was to see a United team actually playing the opposition off the park. Leicester and Reading particularly spring to mind. It wasn't the same unfortunately when the magnificent Cowans was replaced by the mediocre Spackman and the quality of the football dipped markedly.

Football, proper football, has lost one of its greats.

The Vonk/Ablett combination was magnificent. They kept an amazing number of clean sheets. We had a run of a dozen games or more in which we conceded maybe three or four goals. His first season gave us stylish, proper football to be proud of.

He did a super job between his appointment and the end of 1996.

He lost his way a bit in the latter half of 1996-7, as we fell away from the top 2. We had won 7 away games by Boxing Day but didn't win another ( indeed, we didn't take the lead in any of them). He became defensive away from home, though injuries did not help.

Shame about his last game, but the draw at Ipswich was one of my favourite games ever.

I'm sure a few here will have been at the first game at Ipswich. Bit of an eye opener and people played out of position, Blake off at H/T. Assembled a tidy side to stave off relegation. Remember going to Leicester and beating them and the locals weren't happy. Thank you Howard Kendall for treating us to seeing Gordon Cowans

Ipswich was amazing. The teams style was transformed overnight.

Build from the back, eh Mr Adkins and Clough?

I think the match against Arsenal was one of the top 5 performances of the last 25 years, we were outstanding and the atmosphere was amazing for a 3 sided ground. They had a strong side out an all, I'm sure Bergkamp played? Seaman made a blinding save (sounds familiar) to keep it at 1-0. RIP HK.

r.i.p loved the football we played under him top manager of his time

Bassett's must win game: Leicester away. Won 5-2.

Kendall's must win game: Palace at
Wembley. Lost 1-0 with no shots on target.

Hooray for proper football!

Mmmm. Bassett had one or two other must wins when he twice relegated us. Didn't go quite so well did they. Neanderthal Pub Manager. Purveyor of Hoof and Hope. Shameful parochial S2.

Hooray for Dinosaurs. Hooray for clinging on to something abandoned by the rest of the civilised world. Hooray for embarrassment.

Hooray for.........Hoof.

Sad news

I went to the Ipswich (fairly pissed) and Leicester games metioned, locals not happy at all.

The win over Arsenal and Rioch given the boot, then Arsenal had to find a new manager  - still got him

He did know his football

The first Cup Final I remember Wham Vs Preston (1964), all the pre-game chatter was about this 17 year old (i fink 17) who played for Preston

Well done Howard ........................ a blade

Couldn't agree more. Nicky Henry and John Ebbrell were both absolutely outstanding value for money signings

I think every manager signs players who don't work out. That's football Comparatively I think HK signed a smaller number of players, a greater proportion of whom were better / successful than NC.

Sad news, I'll raise a glass to him tonight.

Here he is in action, on the right.

March 1972. Drew 1-1, Woody getting the equaliser with a penalty in the last minute

I remember a midweek game and there was a rumour going round that Cowans and Don had been out on the lash the night before. Cowans was red-faced for the first 45 minutes and had to go off at half time. Don chucked his guts up before putting a corner in.
Cowans wasnt out on the lash. He was carried off with a leg injury

You can't give Bassett any credit can you?

Of course, you didn't see it. You stayed away during the Bassett years. You wanted McEwan back.

If Don Hutchinson hadn't got injured ,history might have been so different. He brought some great football to the Lane. He had a sneaky affair with my ex step mother ,his favourite watering hole was the Wheatsheaf.
The Everton team Southall ,stevens ,pointon ,lyons ,ratcliffe ,steven ,bracewell ,reid ,sheedy ,gray and sharp was the most attractive team I have ever seen and would have conquered Europe if it hadn't been for the wankers across Stanley park.

Yes Bergkamp played as did Ian Wright. Never forgot the excellent move in the 1st half. Mitch Ward playing a clever pass for Chris Short who overlapped very quickly and squared for David White to thunder a shot against the underside of the bar. Yes Seaman made a point blank save in the last minute
