How We Used to Live 1967

The Beatles, Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane single was released one day before this game was played (17th February/18th February).

Is it me or does anyone else think that the general play was pretty awful? Can only imagine it's because they were playing on a 'gluepot' pitch.

Them wer't days. Muddy pitches, clogging tackles (no rolling abart injured), Putton not wearing his hairpiece, black and white games, "Clarke really angry" at disallowed goal (turned to ref and said by Jove that's unfair sir in a raised voice).

Sorry couldn't resist this old chestnut

Bobby Robson, World Cup winner George Cohen, Johnny Haynes the first £100 a week footballer (yes kids, before that it was £20 a week), Allan "Sniffer" Clarke, Guards ciggies, BOAC DC10

Terrible football, Mick Jones finish apart and how the hell did we get a draw out of that :-)

Strawberry Fields is my favourite Beatles song.
Unfortunately, I think I'm on my own :(

Isn't this the clip with a young itsinyerblood in the crowd?

I most definitely was raul. As has been noted elsewhere, although Fulham were never blessed with great players throughout the team, the young Clarke, the superb Johnny Haynes, Bobby Robson, and George Cohen (he and Ray Wilson were still the best fullback pairing that England have ever had) definitely made Fulham a team worth watching, even if they had more down than up days. Great clip from WalthamstowBlade too. Doesn't appear too much emphasis on tactics, just get the ball forward and improvise in hope.

I've always loved football grounds pre-arena era. Craven Cottage is one such, compact, close to the pitch, and on a match day it just feels like a ground is meant to feel. Much as BDTBL does even to this day.

George Best did say that Cohen was the most difficult full back he played against. I have not seen Cohen play but looking at old video clips and the full match of the 1966 World Cup final, he seems to be quick and good at winning possession BUT he seemed to lack ball control quite a few times especially when running with the ball (the awkward way he uses his arms when trying to control the ball is noticable). Would you agree?
I read a quote on Cohen's overlapping style "He hits more photographers than Frank Sinatra". Is this unfair?

I saw Cohen play regularly, and my memory was that he was a cultured footballer. I suspect the 'use of photographers' as target practice had something to do with the quality of the pitches. I don't think you get to become England's first choice right back unless you could do your job effectively, which is not to suggest that George wasn't capable of hitting a cow's arse with the proverbial banjo, but on the whole he was a quality player.

As I wrote Silent, I also liked Ray Wilson. Probably one of the most underrated defenders that played for England. Tough as nails, fast, hardly put a foot wrong, a superb tackler, and completely reliable. And people rate Ashley Cole? No comparison in my book.

well it was rather a dull first half so we decided to leave it out

that would have come in handy this season

proves one thing,
people think its a new thing having periods of games that are dreadful
but it was dull a lot when we were in our hey day , exciting games are like rocking horse manure

Ramsey seemed to trust Cohen more than he did in Armfield (who was a good ball player) and no one can argue that it brought success to the team. Have seen footage of Ray Wilson and I agree that he looked quality despite his error leading to the Germans first goal in the World Cup Final

Good player was Jimmy Armfield, but I still maintain that Cohen offered a bit more. Point taken about Wilson, Silent, even the best make mistakes. I've seen Bobby Moore, at his peak, play a poor pass, but he'd be the first to acknowledge it and make sure that he didn't repeat the same mistake again. Ramsey's selection throughout the world cup was not always met with universal agreement. At the time I recall certain red top newspapers wondering why Hunt got the nod over Greaves?

My dad thought it should be Greaves not Hurst for the final! Another correct decision by Ramsey!

I remember reading in "Sir Alf" by Leo McKinstry that Ramsey was furious with Armfield for being over eloborate in a match that led to the opposition scoring (think it was against Scotland in 1965) and he then decided that Cohen would be his first choice RB from that match

I think it was almost a case of the fates coming together. The team Ramsey selected gelled well, they had the same belief based on an intense desire to drive on. I think that after we beat Argentina (who were quite atrocious in their desire to nobble the opposition) it was then that we began to think, "Why not...?" Of course luck played it's part, and facing Germany was an incredibly difficult ask. The Germans then, as now, played an efficient brand of football with good players throughout their team, but you couldn't have scripted that game, what with Hurst's debatable second goal. I say debatable, I think goal-line technology would have ruled out this 'goal' and the game may have had a very different outcome. But you can't quibble with Hurst's third goal, Hurst had just enough space and time to hit the ball as their 'keeper was glued to the spot. And that knocked the stuffing out of our German friends.
