How good was he - Alan Woodward

14th April 1976 at Elland Road in a 1-0 Blades win.
Woody received the ball 30 yards from goal and me old Dad was the first to jump up and shout Goal before it left his foot.
Was there that night if my memory is correct I am sure whilst scoring that goal Woody nutmegged Trevor Cherry?
Good night managed to get a lift home and managed to get the last orders in the Plumpers

I often think back in wonder when I look back at when I was old enough to go to The Lane on my own (1970/71 season). I thought all footballers were that good! I know we tend to remember players as better than they actually were, but in the case of TC, Woody, Badge etc they really were that good.

Just imagine them playing today with perfect pictures & a much more intense training regime.

Does it count as ‘direct’ from a corner if the ball doesn’t touch the ground before it hits the net?
I remember (possibly against West Ham), TC took the corner to Woody on the edge of the box and he volleyed directly it into the net, then another corner in the same match he did the same but with his LEFT foot -but it was blocked on the line.

And at Leicester, direct from a corner on our LW. Pick that out Shilton.
First place I nearly got beaten up at.
I just loved Filbert Street.
Mind you a better ie more atmospheric ground than the nearby antiseptic s+++++e they've got now.

At Upton Park in November 1973? Yes, Woody volleyed in a TC corner for the 2nd goal but I dont know if they tried it again during the match. I didnt go to that match.

I have been going to Bramall Lane since 1971. He is the best striker of ball in a Sheffield united shirt. He also scored direct from corners on several occasions.
Agreed, and very glad I also had the opportunity to see him play. It may be an 'age thing' but few of the recent years crop get anywhere near him.

different gravy , truly world class , he migrated to United States and at times outshone Pele
never seen a player hit a ball as hard, broke the net at west ham ,literally

A lot of over the top gushing in this thread me thinks.

Good player no doubt but he can't have been that good or he wouldn't have played for us for so long.

I can't comment because he was way before my time but everything seems better when you're remembering it.

He was that good take it from me. Uniteds 2nd highest goalscorer not bad for someone who played on the wing. Also most of his United career was in the top flight and at that time players tended to be one club men, remember TC was with United for 8 yrs.
If he was playing with one of the more fashionable club's he would definitely have been capped for England.
I have never seen a United player take a corner like Woody he had an unearing quality to strike a football with pace and accuracy.

You never saw him play, You say you cant comment but you have
Football was different back then. There were lots of one club players
How many players do you see score direct from a corner ? Woody did many times. He was also decent in goal
His dead ball shooting was the best in the country

I respect your opinions but why did he never play for England?

That's not a statement meant to denigrate your thoughts, just a general question.

He played in the First Division pretty consistently from 1965 to 1975 but never got the call.

Bill Shankly also expressed his surprise that Woody never got the call up, and he was a decent judge.

Not for nothing was Alf Ramsey's England team known as " wingless wonders"

Fckg ridiculous post ! Take it from me he was that GOOD 👍

Bit harsh to say it's ridiculous.

Why do you think he never played for England?

After we won the World Cup in 1966 we weren't exactly flowing with talent.
You've stepped on my toes here regarding Woody! If youve never seem him play keep your gob shut!

I like that.

Ramsey didn't play wingers and l think playing at United didn't help either.
Ramsey picked TC in the squad/team regularly, however he was a central midfielder. Maybe that's it

You might be misremembering though.

In my head I think Paul Coutts and Mark Duffy are two of the best midfielders ever.

They weren't though, they were kind of journeymen who flitted between the Championship and League One.

Being good for us isn't the same as being good in the world of football in general.

Maybe Woody was the same.

A lot of excellent players didnt play for England in those days. Bowles and Worthington should have had more caps . Woody didnt play for Man Utd or Spurs or West Ham if he had he would have had England caps
Ramsey played without wingers we also had Don Revie as manager
Many United players should have played for England but didnt Joe Shaw Jimmy Hagan Len Badger to name a few
You clearly know fuck all about football in the 60s and 70s

Other teams were interested in Woody especially West Ham but at that time it was a lot easier for less glamourous clubs to keep their best players. Bobby Moore wanted to leave West Ham in 1966 and refused sign a new contract just before the start of the World Cup but West Ham were still able to command a high fee for him even though he was without a contract. When he realised that players that arent contracted to a club were not able to play in the World Cup as it was the rules at the time. He was England's captain and was looking forward to the World Cup. He reluctantly agreed to sign a new contract with West Ham for the 1966-67 season.

You have no idea how different (and better for me) football were in these days.
