I must say I was surprised that he wanted to sign Revell in the first place, but I agree with him not paying over the odds for him (although I'm equally surprised that Northampton are paying huge wages).

Precisely. I think my worry is caused by the recent history we have as a club and difficulties in signing players. We've created our own problems by paying stupid wages to overrated players so there's an expectation that we'll keep doing so. If players have been getting better offers at other clubs in this division, what's to stop this continually happening with all our targets? I can;t see why the majority of players would take (as an example) 25% less wages just for the privilege of playing for our club, unless they have some attachments here.

This is pretty much where I'm at too. The "players want an extra 2k a week" thing is because we have a history of getting mugged off, they know we will pay it. If Northampton waht to pay Revell what he wants, good luck to them.

It is frustrating missing out on players of course, but I absolutely agree that we shouldn't pay more than CW thinks they are worth. Especially on the likes of Revell whos resale value would be just South of Fuck All.

We're clearly pushing our luck far too much and it's costing us, and will end up costing another season if we don't change sharpish.

Change Sharp!?!?!?!
I knew you never really rated him Barney ;)

Barney was angry the board hadn't signed him even though he'd read somewhere he was shit.

Re Ravell it was the player wanting more than CW thought he was worth. Something meaningful to listen too.

Even at my age I fancy an Audi R8, but guess what, something's preventing me getting one.

The wife?

Sean, I know very little about the guy myself. Just seems to me that we are less ok for Centre Halves than we are for forwards. I'd rather Revell's demands (whatever they might have been) be put somewhere else. What little I know about Revell would suggest to me that he's not much better than what we already have.

I've already said, what if he hasn't made any final moves yet? You ignored it. Your standard technique for difficult questions.

The point being of course, you don't know, which really ought to be your strapline.
He made his intention clear he wanted to sign more players by now. That hasn't happened, so for the 4th time he must have been prevented. You suggest him not making any final moves. So in that scenario, him not making any final moves has prevented him meeting his aims.

I do hope the penny drops soon as I really don't enjoy having to spoon feed.

Someone said to me the other day you were too thick not to be Curtis and I'm wondering if they may be right.

If you are, are you still pissed off we didn't sign Paul Pogba from Man. United and Crewe got him instead?

Na, not me. I did used to read BM though, so I am of course aware of him. On the point of Pogba, I saw him play for Crewe at the Lane a few seasons ago and he was awful.

Notice you're steering away from the subject though. I wonder why?

1) That wasn't Paul you sure you aren't from Ipswich?

2) I have answered. You said he was preventing it himself which is a bit dim. Especially when the original comments were regarding other factors, ie the board.

Which part of

"I will not pay over the odds........he isn't worth what he wanted"
"players are wanting an extra £2K a week just because it's Sheffield United.....we won't sign these players"

do you not understand?

I genuinely give up. How is this not straight forward.

He wants something
He;s trying to get something
He hasn't been able to get something
Something must have prevented him from doing so.

It is straightforward and he has already explained - an unrealistic wage demand from Revell has prevented him bringing that one in, and he has hinted about MK Dons being a sticking point on another. These things happen and have to be dealt with. Stuff gets delayed and complications materialise in all industries. He never gave cast iron promises on exact dates only that he hoped to get deals done. Give the guy a chance, he's working on it ;)

Just out of interest, how is it unrealistic if another club have met his demands?

But will his demands of Northampton have been the same as what he'd asked for from Sheffield United? Given our relative sizes he (or his agent) could have looked for a premium from us, and let's be right, it's not as if we haven't paid over the odds in the past. Other considerations would be geography, would he need to move house to play for Northampton? Would he want to commute to Sheffield each day? Would he be a regular starter here? I'd say no, but at Northampton he will be.

There are plenty of variables players as well as clubs consider, and I think it only fair to back Wilder on his judgement of a players value. Northampton may well see him as the key member of their squad and pushed the boat out accordingly. He'd be a squad player here and no more. However we look at it though, if he chose Northampton over us then I don't feel sad on missing out.

Do we know what they offered him cash wise? I thought the two year contract was the clincher?
That may well be but I don't consider a request for a two year contract to be unreasonable. I'd suggest expecting players to sign for one year is more unrealistic.

Why would he be a squad player? CW in his list last night said he was looking for a target man, not a target man and a back up target man. Or two strikers.

Moaning cunts or simply not fuckwits who believe everything they're told like it's Gospel?

I'm 100% behind Wilder but he's spouting a different version of the same old shit we've heard for years.
.

Im wondering what it is hes said you find unbelievable
as far as Im aware hes promised nothing yet , and hasnt begun recruiting seriously yet , just 2 bits of opportunist signings that were available before the summer holidays started

and unlike the previous manager has discarded a truckload of dead wood
which was an encouraging start

when they return from their jollies I expect to see enough to show the man will not shy away from taking risks and going for it
something Adkins never tried to do

Possibly but I'd go with Wilders judgement and reasoning to be perfectly honest.

maybe you might not but others would - there'd be far more criticism and unrest if it all went quiet.

You have a point there. I just wish he'd started off treading the middle ground. It's the dashing expectations that's frustrating.

As did I but then Wilder has come out and said it was about wages.

Wilder has said he wouldn't pay pkayers more than he thought they were worth. Maybe they didn't even get to contract length discussions?

I can see why he would choose Northampton in terms of a longer contract and first team football. It's ok paying players what the manager thinks they're worth. That's good management. The issue comes if that manager's valuation of players is out of kilter with other managers.
