I can imagine Pinchy tearing his hair out today. There were plenty of lofted balls to nobody and not a lot of pass and move.

Nevertheless, an effective performance and a good three points. Keep it up Cloughie.

how very dare you
cultured long searching passes , looks a bit wayward at times , but wait till it comes off and the automatic homing in clicks in

He's doing what the previous manager should have done, introducing new ideas slowly. Keeping it simple and sticking to what's working is the most sensible thing initially.

Yeah you're right there. Collins might be wanted for assault the number of balls he blasted high into the crowd, effective but not pretty. Some of the hoofs may have been effective if King had some presence and effectiveness about him. Taylor ran his socks off. Collins early on beat several players to play it out of defence then passed it to one of theirs and it nearly cost us.

Still, onwards and upwards.

What was the crowd today ? I was surrounded by students in the Jess Ennis stand

Didnt think we hoofed it THAT much - and the majority of teams do it a bit - seemed pointless trying to blast it up to Taylor the times we did. I thought we tried to play some nice football today and by and large succeeded. The confidence seems to be slowly coming back. Long had very little to do, after the first five minutes settling down I thought the defence played very well apart from Collins one bad call which game them the goal. Doyle was solid, McGinn tried hard to impress and largely succeeded, thought Flynn, despite looking just as lightweight as the day he walked into Bramall Lane got forward well and took players on. King tried his best but looks a shadow of the striker he used to be, Taylor is a bit haphazard but with a fitter version of King as a partner could come good. I thought Lappin did a very good job both going forward and protecting Hill. With players like Coady, axter, Miller and Cuvelier we had a strong bench today which means we also have a strong squad to go at over the next few weeks.
All in all I was very pleased with the performance, definitely something to build on. leaving all thoughts previously expressed on King's character, we need an 70 minute workhorse to take his place and we could start going places.

Room for improvement but far better than the mind-numbing negative shite under Weir. We were more positive, got more men forward and cut out the suicidal messing about at the back. First 60 mins were good - we let them back in it - but promising signs in Clough's first game.

Excellent crowd of nearly 19,000.

You nailed it with one word- effective

Oh, please don't take my post as negative, you have picked up on the very point I was intending to make. It wasn't a particularly attractive performance, but we got the job done, mostly made clearances when we had to and passed it around when the opportunity arose.

I am certainly not complaining. Today provides a good base on which we can build. As confidence grows, I should imagine our passing and movement will improve.

I am very pleased with our first win against 11 men this season.

Enjoyed it today, bar the last 10 minutes or so when we sat back and let them come at us. I'm beginning to warm to this hoof stuff. I wonder what Carling lager tastes like........?

I agree with Patrick Suffaux and puppet, though I cannot share the latters enthusiasm for Axter. :)

We did play some good football. Far better then under SemiPro and Quickfix. Secondly, Nigel will gradually, pragmatically but definitely, introduce a greater emphasis on pass and move. We shall, as things progress, see far more of proper footballers like Cuvelier and Baxter, and some newcomers of quality.

I'm delighted. The journey started today!

Well done, young man.

We've done much better with Baxter and Cuvelier out of the team than in this season.

I agree. I'm not advocating their immediate inclusion. That's why I said "as things progress". I've no doubt both will have significant parts to play in the future. They are very good players at this level. Sure, we haven't seen it yet.

I couldn't really comment on Cuvelier but I agree that Baxter should be a big asset, yes.

I can help with that. He's awesome at this level.

Watched him a few times last season (once against us). Powerful running from midfield, incisive defence splitting passes and when given the freedom to attack can be a nightmare for the opposition to deal with.

We've seen nothing from him yet because Weir was insistent on playing him in a holding midfield role (what a waste). He initially tried him in a stranded left wing position. Typical of Weir's reign really, had good players but didn't know how to use them.

Good stuff, I know he was highly rated when we signed him but I'd probably only seen him once, when Walsall played at the Lane.

I remember him roasting Matty Hill a couple of times in that game. Someone on this forum recently posted a youtube montage of him playing for Walsall. Very typical of his all round game.

Yeah I saw that on the video, the lad in the middle should have buried it! Great save from Long. I hope we see some of that soon.

Baxter has been toss and it was like playing with 10 men half the time. From what little I've seen of little C I think he looks a good little footballer. That said, who we play him with will be key to how good.

At this moment in time as Mr Clough said, the only football we need to play is winning football..
When we're safe I'm sure we'll start to see a difference...
