No such thing as hoof. Tired cliché, for probably two different styles of play. In the 50s Charles Reep came up with the idea of 'kick and rush' and the statistical suggestion that most goals are scored after 3 passes or less. In modern parlance the basis was to hit long balls into the channels for a tall centre-forward to head on/control. Wolves of the 50s had great success with this and much of the success of Norway under Egil 'Drillo' Olsen and the influencial of Nils Arne Eggen was based on a more sophisticated counter-attacking version of 'kick and rush'.

Later, Charles Hughes in his book, The Winning Formula: The Football Association Soccer Skills and Tactics, argues that most goals are scored within 5 passes. This version of the long-ball game gave rise to the game we recognise under Bassett et al.

As an all-consuming philosophy and style of play it has almost disappeared. Teams will employ similar tactics for certain situations (Mourinho will employ it quite often) but hardly ever is this the sole way teams play (whereas Wimbledon, Watford and us did it for several seasons). The legacy lives on in other ways, indeed I watched Norway several times in the recent qualifying competition and some Olsen trademarks (continuous runs without the ball "å være best uten ball" , zonal marking, very fast and direct counter-attacking) are still very evident.

Football has moved on and evolved and will continue to do so. Styles and tactics come and go, just as few teams are now playing the pure tiki-taka style of Spain and Barcelona of 5 years ago.

Now let me see if I can consult someone in the legal profession a lawyer or solicitor about that?

If your losing 1-0 with 5 minutes left
Hoof is always the best option
get it in there
how many times did we see Brian Deane score in the last 5 minutes from some wonderful hoofing style football

Hoof won't get you anywhere. No half decent side these days plays hoof.
was it not hoof that Liverpool played knocking 35 yard balls beyond the defence for Ian Rush to run onto
was in not hoof that Van Nisterooy did exactly the same at old Trafford
Leicester are joint top on 40 yard punts for Jamie Vardy to latch onto as we type

We dont have exclusivity on hoof

How many times did we see him score in the other 85 minutes due to hoof?

Has this post been started because there is a perception we have been employing 'hoof' tactics?

If so I think its a bit wide of the mark. We have been more physical, and moved the ball forward between the lines a lot quicker, strikers have come deeper to pick up the ball, but there is nothing to suggest we use hoof tactics.

How we played in the 30 minute decent spell v Bradford reminded me of how we played under Warnock to some extent. There was urgency and purpose to our play.

You know what used to irritate me back in the 90s?
How a run of the mill team were classed as hoofing the ball yet on match of the day a player of a fancy club would always have the vision to play a "delightful long pass" and "pick someone out"
Now that used to rile the tits off me

When we were promoted with leeds on itv football he actually said one week we were playing hit and hope and it payed off when we scored
the week after an identical pass by Gordon Strachan to Chapman was a cultured ball of great vision

annoying doesnt begin to cover it

No evidence at all we are employing hoof.
Our play is more intense moving the ball around quicker but in the main playing it to feet.
Having a descent midfield with presence has helped.

I dunno about that, he's a useful player. Even wears a red and white shirt...;)

Don't see it as often these days (the goal) but how they creamed themselves over Beckhams 60 yarder v Wimbledon yet when Deano had put the much more difficult 50 yarder in v Liverpool there was barely a murmur.
Shameless double standards but it's what we have come to expect in football

Is it real Hoof we're talking about? I can't be doing with Smooth.

This looks like a bit of a loaded question. Personally I'd say you have to be capable of playing long or short in order to keep you opponent from setting up to stifle you

I miss the days of when Brian Gayle, Sean Murphy, Holdsworth and Morgs used to just Twat it to clear their lines. Beesley was always aiming for the Southstand roof with his clearances.

Now we've either got poncey 'play it from the back' shit or Collins trying to clear his lines by playing it to the opposition strikers
