how many have gone from us to them though ,I can think of Varadi and John Harris ,and Andy Daykin :)

Simon Stainrod joined them via Oldham and QPR

I would keep the whole back five. Good solid unit. The defence would be the last think I would tinker with. We need to find and develop a good left back to challenge Hill and educate McMahon not to get a nose bleed when he crosses the half way line

Eh?? The defence got slaughtered every time it came up against any pace. Shockingly slow. McMahon physically assaulted any winger with pace.

you must have been to different games to me. The number of clean sheets shows how tight the defence was

You're right, the defence was solid last season but the problem is that by playing both Hill and McMahon at full back the options going forward are hugely limited. A lot of the success the previous year was down to Lowton playing a bit like League One's Dani Alves - beyond Williamson a lot of the time.

I'd like to see us sign an attacking full back with pace and I'd be happy to sacrifice some defensive solidity for that. We should also be looking to replace Collins (mainly because his rumoured salary is beyond what we can afford) with a centre half with pace.

A lot of the problems last season came from teams realising that if you could turn our defence you'd likely get deceont opportunities. Brentford showed that perfectly at the Lane.

Oh, and Deano is spot on: McMahon is a dirty bastard. Not the sort of approach we should be condoning.

Blades fans seem quite squeamish about our players fouling / cheating at the moment. That's a new thing isn't it?

I get the impression that if Michael Brown or Carl Bradshaw or Glyn Hodges played for us now, they wouldn't be universally popular because of their, at times, underhand tactics.

I would rather we employed players who try and play football. I've lost count of the number of times McMahon has needlessly shoved an opposition winger into the advertising boards: is that really what we want our players to be doing?

Same goes for Doyle. I would rather he tried to play football than attempted to foul the opposition midfielders.

You need some players in your team prepared to get stuck in but it has to be hard but fair. Neither Doyle nor McMahon is fair.

The 3 players I mentioned were all hard, not sure any of them were fair though and every one of them was, arguably, much nastier than McMahon or Doyle.

I think the niggly stuff that McMahon, Kitson and Doyle have all done a lot of is an annoyance because they aren't playing well. If they'd been our 3 star men and we'd gone up, I'm not sure it would get much of a mention.

Michael Brown hard but fair? That's a new one. He's a nasty little thug and that side has come out even more since his goalscoring touch deserted him. He's quite probably my least liked ex Blade.

I went to the Blades' games. You? We got clean sheets against typically slow and cumbersome League 1 attacks but whenever we came up against pace e.g. Brentford - we looked hopeless at the back. League 1 will be tougher next season. We are crying out for more pace - in defence and attack.

I went to the Blades' games. You? .
.

Wow.questioning a fellow Blade if he goes to games. Must mean you are a MASSIVE Blade.

For the record,. I missed two home games and one away game all season. If you missed less than that ,well done but it doesn't make me(or you) a bigger Blade than anyone else or means I'm more(or less ) entitled to an opinion thou. You appear to think it does.

Look at the facts. We conceded an average of less than one goal a game in the league and conceded the 2nd least in the league (after Swindon). This would suggest that 22 other teams in the league were more 'hopeless' than the The Blades at the back...even against pace. The problem is the front 6 which is where the new manager should concentrate what resources we have.

It is is not physical pace we need on its own .You can have all the pace in the world but if you are shit with the ball there is no point. We need players with speed of thought, good movement and tactically aware . All these our front 6 didn't display often enough(if at all) last season.

Is charisma a factor here?

Charisma (likeability?) definitely factors.

Biggest factor for me though is that they (Hodges, Bradshaw, Brown) played in popular, successful teams at times when our fans had a strong bond with the club.

If we are in the business of selling players like Maguire (slow, predictable, mid-Champ. at best) or Long (developed right, future England goalie) for the usual 'undisclosed fee' (prob. <£1m each) we may as well shut the Academy down and do what other clubs do - cherry-pick.

Scholes wouldn't be liked either I guess and not just because he is ginger.

He's distinctly ordinary, like others say if we got a good fee and spent it on some good signings it would be well worth selling him. But if we sell him, or anybody else, the manager won't see a bean of it. Which is the main reason we're in the shite in the first place.

groan.. not this again..
blades sell (insert name of current star performer here) to owls because his dad had a blue car once :D

From what I hear Harry is pretty happy and (unsurprisingly) settled at United and not looking to move away (in either a geographical or club sense) at the moment. I also gather there's not been any serious bids/enquiries for him either at this stage - all could change but I wouldn't be at all suprised to see him still in a Blades shirt come August.

Personally that pleases me as i still feel he and Collins are a solid if unspectacular partnership at this level and is not a position we really need to be concentrating more targets for when others are of far greater concern. If however a bid of £1m+ comes in i'm sure our financial state will dictate we reconsider the matter.

Bradshaw started off with them. How many other Blades supporters joined the dark side as their first club?

I seem to remember that one of their most cherished stars of the past was brought up as a Unitedite before passing over to the "dark side" : Mel Sterland!

No idea, but didn't he play for us in the Jimmy Muir era?

Will Moyes follow up on Ferguson target Maguire?

John Edwards reports: David Moyes will be hoping Manchester United’s January transfer dealings are of more consequence than last month’s damp squib, and with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both the wrong side of 30, he may well pursue defensive reinforcements, as well as in midfield. With that in mind, will he consider the merits of Sheffield United centre-back Harry Maguire?
Sir Alex Ferguson certainly did last season. Sportsmail has learned United were regular attenders at the Blades’ promotion near-miss in League One and that 20-year old prospect Maguire was the player they were watching. A commanding presence, the sturdily-built 6ft 4in defender is surprisingly comfortable on the ball and recently broke into the England under-21 ranks. He doesn’t lack experience, either, as this will be his third full season as a first-team regular. Likely to cost around £4million.

I suggest Harry has a go at Championship football before anything like that.

I don't know which is the less likely, that Maguire will sign for Manchester United or that they'll pay £4M for him.
