Sheffield United rejected an offer from the Club five days (Wednesday) ago for defender Harry Maguire. This was the Club’s final offer and we have since entered into discussions with other transfer targets.

In light of Sheffield United’s statement this morning the board will meet with manager Steve Bruce this afternoon to determine whether we now wish to pursue the transfer after the South Yorkshire club's apparent U-turn.

In other words, they called our bluff and we collapsed.

Wow. Not that I believe it, but this would go along with the story of what supposedly happened with Maguire and Clough before the Dundee friendly.

Eh? So this 'met our valuation' is bollocks. Unless we have suddenly lowered it?

I'm sad to see Maguire leave but it's not exactly unexpected. It's also reassuring that we have held out for a decent valuation for the first time that I can remember.

The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating and so this deal should only be judged once the subsequent deals are completed. We have the centre halves in place - although they're not as good as Maguire - but we desperately need a focal point up front.

As for those who "never rated" Maguire: I'm not entirely sure why - he's been very, very good for the majority of games that I've seen him in. Still, it'd be dull if everyone had the same opinion!

Cheers Harry, good luck in the Championship next season.

It's plausible:

Hull to SUFC: we will give you £2M (or whatever)
SUFC to Hull: no way, we want £3M
Hull to SUFC: no chance, bye.

SUFC to Harry: Hull deal off Harry, 3rd Division for you next season. Wave goodbye to that half a million pound a year 3 years contract
Harry to Clough [massive sulk and big row]
Clough to SUFC: there is no way tha mardy bastard is in my team next season

SUFC to Hull: ...errr that £2m you mentioned, sounds good...

Far from it for me to suggest that they like to look like they've done better than they have in the transfer market ;)

It cracks me up. You do know that what Hull have said will go around the Blades forums like wildfire don't you? ;)

I think that's unnecessary from Hull, but maybe they want clubs to roll away and let their bellies be tickled! Or it to appear that way!

So it's plausible that the department which came up with that quote on their website isn't aware that whoever negotiates the incoming transfers put a final bid in over the weekend? Convenient.

Might it be possible that Hull are the ones engaged in the dark arts of miscommunication?

Indeed - somebody is telling porkies and/or playing silly beggars.

The question is who...

Are we about to sell our best player again? I'm in shock.

Whatever the fee is, we would have got a lot more getting promoted. We may have every intention of reinvesting the money in the team, but what 1M+ player wants to play in League One? And no, wewe wont be getting Brayford.
You think we would have gotten more for him when he's out of contract?

I hope SUFC disclose the fee now (unless it puts them in breach of contract).

If Hull are lying, United can come out and say there was a new offer over the weekend. There will, of course, be paperwork to back them up.

If United stay silent we can draw our own conclusions.

Right? Still could be bollocks but Clough has been known to have a strop at players.

Eh, how does that fit with:

The Premiership club have finally met United's valuation for the defender, who has now been granted permission to speak to the East Yorkshire club.

United's Managing Director, Mal Brannigan, commented: "We made it clear that we wanted Harry to stay by offering him a new contract at the end of last season, unfortunately he and his representatives chose a different path.

"However, as he is under contract at Bramall Lane, we exercised our right to set our own valuation of him and after numerous bids which did not meet our expectations, Hull City increased their offer and we have reluctantly accepted.

Hull have said they made a final offer last Wed which was refused and that United have today contacted them accepting the offer.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was true

Just because we rejected their last offer, it doesn't mean it didn't meet our valuation. Maybe we were just seeing if they'd go even higher than our valuation.

If you believe the version of events that they're putting out to their fans.

AS I say, United can simply say it is untrue and that a new offer has been made. Hull would look pretty stupid if United did that. I can't believe Hull would be so stupid as to put out a message like that if they knew it could be so easily disproved.

Note United do not say when the "increased offer" was made. What United say and what Hull say are not contradictory.

No they haven't, they're putting out smoke and mirrors - "in light of Sheffield United's statement" which clearly says they have finally met our valuation.

Exactly. On Weds our valuation was, say £3m that Hull didn't bid. After throwing a strop/having a barney with NC/whatever on Friday, we decided we didn't want an unhappy player on our hands, and decided the £2.5m (or whatever was bid) was actually worth it to draw a line underneath it all.

They said this

Sheffield United rejected an offer from the Club five days (Wednesday) ago for defender Harry Maguire. This was the Club’s final offer and we have since entered into discussions with other transfer targets.
In light of Sheffield United’s statement this morning the board will meet with manager Steve Bruce this afternoon to determine whether we now wish to pursue the transfer after the South Yorkshire club's apparent U-turn.

Thats seems to me to mean that there has been no contact between Hull and United since last Wednesday. that United rejected their final offer on Wed and that the deal was then off. If United now put out a statement saying "Hull sent us a fax on Sunday making an offer higher than their Wednesday offer and it is this offer we have accepted", Hull will look like liars.

I can't believe Hull would put out a statement leaving themselves open to such an allegation.

I understand the bid has now been accepted after Hull reluctantly agreed to take Doyle as part of the deal.

If it was that Harry had a strop and we went back to Hull then so be it, however Harry can feck off if that;s the case

You would expect SUFC to remain silent until such time as contracts are signed and the ink is dry. Getting into a spat with Hull serves little purpose if Maguire really does want to leave.

I personally don't believe Hull's statement for one second. There is no way United would post a statement on their website without prior agreement between the parties that the terms were acceptable. It's a (crap) PR attempt by them in my view as they clearly have not had their own way in negotiations.

Of course that's possible, however I also don't think Hull like the perception that they've been ordered around by a league one club around this whole deal.

I disagree. United's statement is very carefully worded and does not contradict what the Hull statement says. Obviously, clubs will spin things to make themselves look good, They will not tell easily disprovable lies.

If you are correct then United would look incredibly silly if Hull decide not to move forward with the deal. Time will tell I suppose.

Not really. They have left themselves a get out clause - all they have said is HM has permission to talk to Hull. If it all breaks down they can say a deal could not be agreed.
