Like Ive often said, it shouldn't (and hasn't) be too hard to replace players of HM's ilk in this league.

If we were a top end Championship team and lost our supposedly best player then Id be more concerned.

Sometime Thursday afternoon NC's phone rings...

NC "Hello Nigel speaking"
HM "orite boss errr can't make that meal tonight just played golf with Brucie i mean me Dad and got sun stroke"
NC "Ok Harry whatever you say don't be late tomorrow"
HM "Ok boss i am sure a good nights sleep will do it"

Sometime later that night...............

Text Message from NC to HM "Harry why have you just been seen coming out of Nandos with Steve Bruce"
Text Message from HM to NC "no boss not me like i said earlier got bad hayfever"
Text Message from NC to HM "I thought you said sun stroke?"
Text Message from HM to NC "Yeah it was now the hayfevers kicked in"
Text Message from NC to HM "Harry whats going on?"
Text Message from HM to NC "Don't know what you mean, anyway batteries going flat see you tomorrow"
Text Message from NC to HM "Just plug it in then"
Text Message from HM to NC "Can't find me charger"
Text Message from NC to HM "I wasn't born yesterday Harry, your going to get it tomorrow"
No reply from Harry

If that is true then well done Clough. A player acting like a child isn't needed around a club.

All the best Harry.
always best to be wary around this types of story. I think it's well known that Harry wants to go, but I'd be surprised if he started being disruptive in order to force the move.
As wizadry alluded to, once this deal is done there should be no reason not to make deals happen as there should be plenty of fund available for strengthening. Unless Clough comes out and says he won't pay over the odds, and then that's his decision but it can't be an excuse if results don't follow.

Well done clough for lying to all our fans.If he can lie about something like that, then what else is he not telling us.

Always going to happen this and i'm glad he hasn't gone on deadline day like I feared. Could turn out to be a good deal but if we don't use the money wisely it could cost us promotion. I don't think we need another centre half. We have two proven League One defenders and a youngster who is expected to play at a higher level before long. Then we have Kennedy who showed last season he can make the step up.

We can turn this into a positive by strengthening the areas that left us down last season. We won't find a better centre half than Harry at this level but at the same time not many League One clubs will have a better set of centre half's than us. We could get three players with this money. 2 strikers and a right back. If those signings are good ones then we'll have come out of this looking better for me. Big few weeks now

Big few weeks is right. Hazza leaving has been on the cards for a good while now, and he leaves with my best wishes. It was more a case of when, not if.

Our next moves in the market are pretty crucial to our season...

Poor deal by us if it's £2-£3m. It means we will need a 40 goal a season striker now compared to a 20 with Maguire, who we won't be able to afford due to FFP as selling Maguire doesn't free up any wages for a new player. Squad is now looking a lot weaker than the end of last season. I doubt we will get promoted now.

Not sure how you've worked all that out but whatever.

Harry is a good player but is untried above League One. He's not worth 2-3m, no chance, if United have got that (and it looks as if they have) then very well done. I don't recall many third tier centre backs being sold for that sort of money.

Good luck to him but I think it's a career finisher. He will sit on the bench for the better part of two years before disappearing into obscurity. He will be a wealthy young man though.

Christ!! Cheer up bud. As good as HM is, that will by no means define whether we go up or not!!

Think that is a bit of an exaggeration of Harry's talents and with Buttler and the new kid from Blackpool, already here, a kid who has proved himself at a higher level than Harry then I am not worried that our defence will suffer after the new partnership has had a few games together. More concerned about where the goals are going to come from

Harry could be a good defender with the right partner but quick skillful strikers in the Premier League will target him and I can see Harry playing Championship level football within 2 years. Good luck to the kid but if we got £3m for him then I think that this is a good deal.
Bruce probably sees a bit of himself in Harry though Harry is better with the ball, all he needs to do now is find a Pallister to play alongside him :)
Agreed. He'll be playing Championship for Hull against us within a couple of years, except we'll be on the way up.

He's not worth that your right, but its about time we got more money than we thought just like all the other clubs do.

Can't say I'm not disappointed. No guarantees in taking this money into the transfer market. Clough seems quite opposed to flinging money at a striker, but this will just make fans more impatient. Oh and we have to put up with all the 'well I never rated him anyway' bollocks.

well I never rated him anyway

Are we about to sell our best player again? I'm in shock.

Whatever the fee is, we would have got a lot more getting promoted. We may have every intention of reinvesting the money in the team, but what 1M+ player wants to play in League One? And no, we wont be getting Brayford.

He wanted out and Hull have met the valuation...let's move on. Bringing in JB and BS would be bloody great :)

As for Clough, would it really gave been a good idea to start a public argument with HM?

Do you really think Harry was the key to us getting promoted?

I don't mind Maguire being sold at all, I think it was inevitable since we first received an offer from Wolves at the start. We have brought in adequate cover with Butler and Mcgahey, I do think fans have to look beyond Brayford now though. He is set to be first choice right back at Cardiff who are looking to achieve automatic promotion in the Championship, why would he want to drop to League One for probably less money? Yes we love him and he loves us but I think he is one for next season if/when Cardiff are promoted.

I don't see this as a "sky is falling down" moment. Let's be honest its been coming for a while. Losing a good centre half is not a promotion deal-breaker in my opinion, we have adequate cover and there are other more influential positions in our team that will prove to be more decisive come next May.

One of them definitely. Our late run last season was built on clean sheets. In Collins and Butlers first run out together they conceded 3 in 45mins at Burton.

Fact is wecan`t be sur we hav got a good dea for him, unless the transfer fee and any stggering of payments (for appearences etc) is released.

Which it wont be. The fee will be described as undisclosed, nd we will be left with th ngging doubt that unless he plays 100+ PL games we won`t see aything lke £2m-£3m...

Maguire clearly wanted out, making comments to the press about playing in Europe, and the club never said he wasn't for sale, only that offers would have to meet his valuation. We held our ground and have managed to get a big fee, if its invested back into the team wisely I'll be happy.

I don't think Maguire leaving will have a massive impact on our season. We have other good players in that position who should be more than able to hold their own at this level. If we don't go up this time it won't be for missing Maguire imo.

Sheffield United rejected an offer from the Club five days (Wednesday) ago for defender Harry Maguire. This was the Club’s final offer and we have since entered into discussions with other transfer targets.

In light of Sheffield United’s statement this morning the board will meet with manager Steve Bruce this afternoon to determine whether we now wish to pursue the transfer after the South Yorkshire club's apparent U-turn.

He does count for FFP now as he's 21 (I think).
