The way I see it, the majority of us would move to a different employer if offered a very substantial payrise to better your life(style) or that of your family. Shame it's turned sour at the end, but that was inevitable. HM gets my good wishes.

Can't blame him for chasing the money so good luck to him. I still think at this stage it is the wrong career move he has only had a handful of games at Championship level never mind in the Premiership. Sadly he lacks the most important attribute and no fecker can turn a shire horse into racer, lack of pace will be his downfall whether he overcomes this or not he has a very steep learning curve ahead and a couple of tricky seasons that is if he ever actually gets a game. Come next January I can see Harry on loan to some shit championship club maybe even at the sty, the only winner here is Harry's agent.

Maybe he'll be given a sweeper role with the quick Chester and Davies next to him? He could end up looking quite classy in the middle with his aerial and physical strength while also spraying passes about and going for the odd run?

Playing devils advocate, would you be prepared to poison the well and be distributive if your new potential employees suggested it?
If the answer is yes would you be expect your old firms stakeholders/collegues/mangement to be supportive of you?
That seems to be the crux of the debate here.

We shouldn't really be surprised about the modern day footballer and their agents because they seem to call the shots these days. What's more important is that we didn't accept the 1st bid Wolves made and have held out for a much better deal. OK, in the grand scheme of things the extra cash isn't that significant but it does say a lot about the backing and the new regime.

I guess we'll never know whether HM engineered the apparent change of heart of the club or whether 'Ull did re-hash their last bid which is what NC is saying but at the end of the day, we've got a decent deal as it stands.

For what it's worth, I can't help but think he'll finish off next season on loan in the championship. Then probably go on to play at that level from then on.

If I was him I would probably move too given the fact one club is 2 leagues above the other. We can only hope that this new regime, which shows signs of old regimes, invest wisely and clough signs up some more scougall type players.

Why are people assuming harry won't get near the team? If that was true, why would hull be paying £2m for him?

Yeah cos no premiership side would pay that for someone who was only going to sit on the bench

No doubt he'll improve by being along side better players, better coaching staff and coming up against better players than the shit in L1.. He'll never have pace which is a worry but if his reading of the game and timing improve even more then he should be just fine. So will his bank balance, a footballers career can be over very quickly.

So who can blame him for wanting to move on to a bigger pay day and vastly better level?!

Good luck Harry all the best

Those thinking Harry will be bench fodder. Wasn't Lowton going to be the same when he left?

Why wouldn't you try to better yourself. If he can get 30k per week he could have enough to be comfortable on a 5 year contract for instance.

It's like we don't expect sportsmen to want better. I'd do what Harry is doing. I'd want to play in the top league. I'd want the money that goes with it. It's a risk but hardly a big one. If he ends up loaned to Leeds in 2 years time he won't be on buttons.

Thanks for entertainment, commitment and fantastic contribution Harry. Loved those occasional crusading runs at the opposition last season!

It was great watching you progress from the very first start you had. Early mistakes were sometimes cringeworthy, but if you continue to improve as you have already done, then you can make the premiership your home.

Well done mate, and good luck with the future. You're better than a bench warmer. Just wish the blades could have progressed/improved enough to keep you.

A little loose with the convient truths there aren't we?
400% pay rise but potentially killing your career in 18 months would be interesting to see if anyone would take it.
Seen a few folk take volunterary redundancy over the past few years for double their wages. Now they can't get back into the workplace at anything close to what they earnt before, even having to retrain completely and start again for low pay.
Others I've known took the money and walked straight into another job on similar or better money. Depends on how good you are, a fair portion of luck and timing.

Those people are probably not utterly reliant on their body being in peak condition though are they? His football career could be ended next week with a bad tackle in training, with no alternative career to fall back on. I certainly don't blame him for taking the money.

I take your point, but Lowton was found out and last season was a bench warmer at Villa, albeit after a great start beforehand.

UTB

Me neither. Let's be honest, it's not as if he hasn't done much for us. He's barely been injured or suspended and played 170 games already. I'd rather we kept him but if he has a bad season with us, he can forget about Europe and the Prem until we bloody get there.

It's a job promotion for him and he deserves it.

He's scored one belter of a goal, but while not bench fodder I don't think he's been particularly successful. Whenever I've seen him, he seems to gets exposed defensively, which was widely predicted on here when he left - indeed I think that even happened in our FA Cup game. He started less than half of Villa's league games last year - I predict his next move will be to a Championship club, probably in the next season. Assuming Villa aren't relegated next season, which is entirely possible.

From his point of view though, entirely the correct decision to make the move - in contrast to, say, Slew.

It's pretty clear from what both NC and Jim Phipps have said today that it was a change of heart by Maguire that made us think again. Both were careful not to say how Maguire expressed or manifested that change of heart. However, the sunstroke nonsense (and NC was clearly being tersely sarcastic when he said it), the sudden change of course and the tone of Nigel's interview, leaves me in no doubt that Maguire and his pet slug have behaved unprofessionally and disrespectfully over the last few days.

Yeah you can certainly tell from the tone in his voice he is pretty pissed off with Maguire. He couldn't wait to talk about something else.

Oh well at least Maguire didn't bite anyone.

One thing you can say about Harry Maguire, he's always given 100% for Utd what's more he comes across as a genuine, honest and sensible lad. Yes he appears to have engineered a move but fair enough, if that's what he wants and with the salaries involved who can blame him, there is little loyalty shown by clubs towards players, so I don't understand how we can expect it from players to their club?
I first saw Maguire against Villa in the Youth Cup Semi and he was the best player on the pitch by a mile. I will miss his performances, for there determination, passion and commitment, qualities that I am sure will make him a success at Hull.
Good luck to him, his efforts in a Utd shirt have certainly merited this opportunity and I wish him well. :(

Personally I'm quite relaxed about this. I've always been a fan of Maguire he's our best defender and it's always nice to see an academy lad playing in the first team. I've always rated Maguire as one the best defenders in League One and I think we'll be much poorer without him. However, he was never a match winner like C***d E*ans and he couldn't influence a match like Lowton. He is replaceable and I think if we re-invest all of the money we've received for Maguire we should be able to find a replacement without too much trouble. I echo the sentiments that I've read so far, Harry seems a good guy and top pro and I wish him well. But I don't believe this deal is nearly as important or seismic as being made out by some aspects of the press. But any way.

All the best, Big 'arry.

It's a good move for all parties IMO. Hull have got a talented player with vast experience at such a young age, HM has got a move to the biggest league in the world that could open up an international career and we've got as good a deal as any 3rd division club could ever realistically ask for a star player.

We move on now and hopefully HMmk2 is as much the real deal as we have been hearing about. Let's also not forget that Terry Kennedy has looked more then promising when he has been called upon. If the transfer fee could possibly add 2 more signings (ideally a bearded RB and a striker) you could argue we're a stronger, more balanced team.

In Clough we trust...

Once a player decides he wants to leave to better himself, in terms of playing level and wages there's very little a club can do to stop it. The best the club can do is get the best price they can. Harry was going as soon as a he decided not to talk about a new contract.
I don't blame him for that at all. How the end game plays out in his departure really is of little consequence.

The unfortunate thing for United is that more clubs haven't spotted the potential in him. I think the quoted price of around £2 million is an absolute steal. We have played the long game hoping more clubs would join in and hike the price up, which hasn't materialised.
The lad has been an outstanding tower at the heart of the defence for several years now, so much so that some have taken it for granted and that this sort of quality can be easily replaced.I am sorry but for me those fantasy thoughts were extinguished in the first 15 minutes at Burton.

Harry was a beast, a really strong guy and we WILL miss him. Not only for his defensive abilities, calmness under pressure, his assured nature but one point so far over looked on here; is as a goal scorer. At a corner/set piece he really was a handful with his presence. Every season he has got more and more dangerous in the opposition box. We've lost a player who potentially could get 5 to 8 goals a season. Interestingly Jack Charlton scored an average of one every 9 league games. Harry already is pretty close to that stat in his last 2 seasons.
He may or may not make it in the PL, I for one think his reading of the game belies his age and pace never seemed to stop a certain Bobby Moore.

Make no mistake a huge chunk of quality has now gone from last seasons side in Harry, the Beard and Connor. I'd love to see. since the arrival of JB what the stats on assists/goals of those 3, as a percentage of our meagre goal scoring record. I'd guess it might be around 35% upwards.

He's crap anyway. Think of all the bubbly, prawn sandwiches and hookers for the boardroom that fee will be able to buy. Great bit of business.

Is Ahr 'Arry really only worth 1/8 the price of Calum Chambers? 16mil to the Arse. I know there are add-ons but did we sell for peanuts again?

Chambers is 19, has performed well at Premiership level, and plays a number of positions in both defence and midfield.

Maguire is 21, has performed very well at League 1 level, and plays one position.

If the fee is £2-3 million I'd say that's about right.

Very good points, but i would also add that Clough has stated Hull have met our valuation (and terms of payment by the sounds of it), so comparing the value of another player to Harry is pointless. Clough stated that if we got the valuation then as a league one side we can get 2-3 players. Which is probably what Southampton need to buy a similar replacement in the Premier League.

The only question we need answering on Harrys sale is: Did we get the money we wanted? The answer from Clough has been yes.

The only questions for the club now that it looks like we've got the money are:
- Can we spend it on a quality new striker?
- Can we buy Brayford?

The answer so far to both of those, again from Clough, is that we're trying to bring in a Championship Striker (albeit on loan, which is slightly worrying, given past history with Loanees "pre clough") and Clough is going back to Cardiff over Brayford.

If Clough pulls both off then i'll be happy.
