hull are now making up their mind about the HM bid. they may not want to proceed.

I think they think they now have United by the short and curlies. They know United want rid.

"Well, we know we offered £2m last week, but we are now thinking about this bloke at Crewe, he's as good as your bloke and we can get him for £1m, we don't know about Harry now....."

If the tantrum story is true, it seems they do work....

I actually think it would be damaging for the club to submit to Hull at this stage and Harry needs to understand the true situation. If they don't meet the valuation he needs to stay and his attitude needs to improve.
Afterall come the end of the season he's going to want a move and he's unlikely to get one to the Premiership if he's been sulking all season and not playing.

17:45 Sky sources understand Harry Maguire has undergone a medical in Hull today and he should be announced as their latest signing in the next 24 hours

I'd also clarify, given my criticism of my perceived overhype, but I hope Harry goes on to do well, but like Walker and Naughton before him I think there are aspects of his game which require improving if he's to be a good Premiership player, and I'm not sure they are skills that can be trained easily.
Fingers crossed he cements a place alongside Davies and does well, I just have my doubts and think we may see him back at a lower level in a few seasons.

Harry Maguire is irrelevant to us now. I won't be proud or bitter watching him on Match of the Day (that's if he makes an appearance). After all, I'd much rather have Nigel Clough with Sheffield United than Harry Maguire with Sheffield United. Thanks for the memories Harry but this will prove to be a mistake on your behalf.

In the OS article the open ended quotes are there again. Forgot which thread these were discussed on recently.

Paragraphs 2 & 3 have opening quotation marks but not closing ones. I'm sure I read somewhere that that means it isn't an "official" quote and only parts of the quote is correct OR that a few parts of the statement have been cut up and made into a made up sentence. Anyway.. the final paragraph opens and ends with quotation marks but 2 & 3 don't.

http://www.sufc.co.uk/news/article/20140728-maguire-update-1786224.aspx

Quotes that span multiple paragraphs generally will have an opening quote mark per paragraph and only close the quote mark at the end of the final paragraph of the quote. :)

I think quotes where they mess with them to sound like they've said otherwise are probably more likely to contain ellipses (...) where they've 'cut' bits out editorially/

I can't believe people are wishing HM all the best with the move when it looks increasingly likely that he and his agent are trying to force the move through?

If he conducted himself professionally and eventually we agreed terms then he could go with our blessings?

But to try and fake sunstroke........

I'm wishing him well but think he'll fall short and will end up effecting his career. We're getting a lot of money for a player I think is fundamentally limited and will be found out at a level higher than ours never-mind Premiership.
The alternative is to spit venom and moan to absolutely no beneficial effect.
There are others on here who couldn't care less now he's gone.
I don't see any problem with the first or final viewpoint.

I think you're right about the Hull statement and the chain of events with the bids. But why did we even release a statement this morning at all? I can't see what it accomplishes. If they thought it would mollify the fans, then they have misjudged the situation. I think fans would rather have seen the sale done with the minimum of fuss in a way that would allow us to move on with other targets. Now this bizarre affair will dominate the agenda and makes us look very silly indeed, and fans will be more pissed off than they were to begin with.
Perhaps communications were agreed by both clubs prior to publication as looking at it both save save face with what has been published. It will all be forgotten if we splash the cash on a striker but there will a shit storm of criticism that will never be far away way until we are10 point clears by the end of Sept.

Indeed Maguire can now be referred as a piggy bastard.

From what I have read, the new HM is better at 18 than Harry was and appears to have more upside to him. By the end of last season, Harry was the fittest he has ever been and probably playing his best football. And don't see too much of an improvement on that and getting 3m for him (or as close as) is as good as you get for a 3rd division footballer in the last year of his contract, having played only limited games in the division above.

History has had us selling our best young players, however never replacing them properly. We know Clough will not waste this and we can only be better for it.

The lad is probably setting himself up for life. Just for the money alone who can honestly blame him? Nearly all of us would do the same.

It makes me laugh when supporters come out with all this nonsense about players being disloyal, only caring about money etc. Loyalty and regular football don't come into the equation, it's about doing something that is an absolute no brainer.

I would love to see such critics stay in their job when someone else offers them a 400% pay rise.

Andy Giddings just posted on twitter - NC on Maguire: " We've accepted the offer this morning. It's a different offer."

So what exactly does different mean?

Harry doesn't have to pass a medical, difficult to do the beep test with sunstroke.

Can't blame him for chasing the money so good luck to him. I still think at this stage it is the wrong career move he has only had a handful of games at Championship level never mind in the Premiership. Sadly he lacks the most important attribute and no fecker can turn a shire horse into racer, lack of pace will be his downfall whether he overcomes this or not he has a very steep learning curve ahead and a couple of tricky seasons that is if he ever actually gets a game. Come next January I can see Harry on loan to some shit championship club maybe even at the sty, the only winner here is Harry's agent.

I wish Harry all the best and just hope he gets the games for them.
Let's be honest, on the whole he's been great for us and given 100%
He deserves a crack at it and the dosh!

Really hope it works out for the lad.

Just a few things:

I've listened very carefully to Nigel's interview. Perhaps a wise thing to do rather than try to interpret partisan website statements as though you were the Rosetta Stone.

One thing is clear, Nigel is both frustrated and disappointed by Maguire. No doubt in my mind that the foolish young man has tried to manipulate a situation and has behaved unprofessionally (on Friday it would appear) You don't stand for that if your name's Clough. Quite right too.

Nigel has not 'lied to the fans' Wiz. If anyone is guilty of a bit of exaggeration and selective sunbathing I suggest we look towards the departing player!

However, what is NC to do in that situation. Say 'no comment' and be accused of keeping us in the dark? Tell the full story whereupon Hull reduce their offer immediately and substantially? Sometimes, in commercial transactions, it's more complicated than simple black or white. NC's duty to us is to manage in the best interests of our club, not to feed an insatiable appetite for news and gossip.

HRH has not fooked off. He remains co-owner of our club and his contractual obligation to invest remains exactly the same. The very capable Jim Phipps is simply doing more of what he did before with a slightly grander title. He is entitled, by the way, to be very disappointed when he reads some of the more emotive nonsense written on here today.
Don't mind most of your post pinchers, but you or anyone else for that matter cannot tell me that what clough said was not an out and out lie, there was nothing wrong when Harry was running up and down the line that night and there wasn't only me who saw it.

How many fans if clough said lick his balls would do it,loads i'll tell ya.People are blind if they can't see we have been lied too,and i'll tell you what, it won't be the last time as a blade either.Same old same old.

A little loose with the convient truths there aren't we?
400% pay rise but potentially killing your career in 18 months would be interesting to see if anyone would take it.
Seen a few folk take volunterary redundancy over the past few years for double their wages. Now they can't get back into the workplace at anything close to what they earnt before, even having to retrain completely and start again for low pay.
Others I've known took the money and walked straight into another job on similar or better money. Depends on how good you are, a fair portion of luck and timing.

No sour grapes from me at all. We would all change jobs for a few extra quid in the bank on pay day I'm sure. Without thinking too deep into it though, when I saw he was going for sure, I couldn't help but think Matt Kilgallon, Jordan Slew, Kyle Naughton

All part and parcel of football. Sunstroke - or whatever - is just a ploy to manufacture a move, just as Suarez biting that Eytie was his way of getting his move to Barca. He was probably 'advised' by his agent to wind NC up and show disrespect, and there was only going to be one winner there.

Us mere mortals, trying the same with our boss would be booted out with no reference. Unfortunately, footie is a lot different. I was far more hurt when Jones, Birchenall, Currie etc. left. Back then, if it went wrong, they'd just open a pub a life would carry on and it would be the Chairman who 'manufactured the move' - to line his pockets. Nowadays, it's a high-pressure, high-stakes and relatively short career which could end with one bad tackle.

So let's not get like our piggie neighbours, where every player is a world-beater. Until they leave and then they're shite. All the best Harry.

Either way most people can't afford to turn down that sort of pay rise. If they can then they probably already had a big pay day in the past.

Most lines of work aren't like football with respect to the shortness of the career and being so well known throughout the industry when being comparatively average against your peers. I doubt many job/career types would have you sat in reserve doing nothing on a large salary, so anyone destroying their career in 18 months in other types of jobs have probably done so because they're simply not very good or haven't tried very hard. Again though it depends on the trade you're in. Some instances are more unique, but not that many.

Despite the obvious differences though I expect Harry will have some self belief that he can establish himself regardless of what others think. In other walks of life other people probably feel that they can step up to the plate when they get a big job offer on a lot more money. I don't think anyone would assume instantly that by taking the money they would be finished in 18 months.
