Hamer

To get the best from him you have to basically be prepared to make him your Adel Taraabt.

Play him on midfield and he gives away possession too much. Play him wide and he doesn’t track back consistently enough.

Play him as a 10 off Bamford and tell him to make something happen.

If you want to play 4-4-2 then there really is no spot for him.
We've not had anyone in the Duffy role since Duffy. Hamer is a perfect fit for it. It removes defensive responsibility and allows him to do what he wants. If he loses the ball then there's almost an entire team behind him to win it back.

We're getting a lot of corners this season and a lot of them are from blocked shots from outside the box. This seems to happen when our midfield "just hit it" instead of actually trying to place a shot with pace. When they just hit it in into a crowd it's inevitably going to hit a defender and go off for a corner which McGuiness will head in to the keepers hands, whereas Hamer is more likely to take a second to find a bit of space and actually shoot properly.

Drop Campbell and play Hamer behind either Bamford or Cannon. Both of those actually looks to make runs and Hamer is the only one that can find a pass for them. 2 up front was working until it didn't.

That’s really only going to end up as 4-2-3-1 though isn’t it?

Hamer isn’t going to do equal work tracking back as Peck so you’ll just arrive at Peck playmaking alongside Riedewald anchoring and Hamer further forward with Brooks and O’Hare making up the 3 😉

If we played 5 at the back he could have potentially played the Duffy or McGoldrick roles.
As always its not as simple as writing names into a formation, the players roles will impact where and how they play but I think with Peck and Riedewald we would have a good base to allow our more creative players to do their thing without being exposed like we were under Selles with the midfield 3 of Peck, Hamer and O'Hare.

Ultimately Hamer is one of our best players and hes dangerous going forward, so we should provide a platform for him to go forward and do his thing. 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 tomato/tomato (that saying doesnt really work when typing :))

But your advocating changing our system/formation to accommodate one player, when that one player can't last 90mins, is injury prone and doesn't always look committed...

Plus, conversely, we've looked much better without him in the team.

I get what you’re saying, I think O’Hare could play the same role but then there is a gap on the LW.

I just think Hamer > cannon/ings/campbell and if we can workout a system that essentially swaps Hamer for one of those then we would have a better starting XI
