SHEFFIELD United have refused to rule out signing Greg Halford on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
But Kevin Blackwell, the club's manager, admits the success of any bid could depend upon the outcome of their promotion battle.
A combination of factors, including the turbulent economic climate and the Carlos Tevez Affair, have prompted United's board of directors to delay contract discussions with members of Blackwell's squad until the summer.
The financial picture surrounding Bramall Lane is set to become clearer this month when the arbitration panel, which confirmed West Ham breached rules governing third party ownership by selecting Tevez during the closing stages of the 2006/07 Premier League campaign, reconvenes to discuss United's compensation claim.
Blackwell has steadfastly refused to be drawn into the debate surrounding the Argentine striker, preferring to concentrate on footballing matters instead.
But, speaking ahead of tonight's Championship fixture with Blackpool, Blackwell admitted he would be tempted to open talks aimed at clarifying Halford's future should the on-loan defender indicate he wants to remain in South Yorkshire.
"I can't make a decision on anyone until we know where we are," Blackwell said.
"And that includes contracts to people who are going to be out of contract.
"In an ideal world, though, Greg would be someone I would definitely consider if I could afford him."
Halford has scored three goals in his last eight outings as fifth-placed United look to secure a top-six finish.
Where would we play him ?
He always said centre mid was his favourite position but that was just about the only position Blackie didn't play him in last season. I can't see him playing right mid unless Wardy is off and presumably not right back so where would he be played ?
I think we had this discussion a few weeks ago. Play him LM, he played there towards the back end of the season and played very well.
Halford Williamson Monty Ward would be an excellent midfield at this level with Harper & Quinny in reserve.
It would be a brilliant signing, hope to god it's true.
Why play a right footed player at left mid though ? OK, he did a reasonable job there but surely we should be looking at the likes of Halmosi who is actually a left footed, left sided player in that position ?
Im shocked Linz has yet to comment on here....
For me, he was close to being our player of the season last year. He had his bad patches like many players but throughout the season he looked a very good player.
I'd take him back in a flash, but apparently he has abit of a big time charlie attitude... probably due to all the clunge throwing themselves at him....

His decline at Wolves hasn't exactly come as a massive shock. I wouldn't be completely thrilled by his return to be honest. It took him half a season before things started to work for him, and then we had a situation where he would end up in 3 different positions every 3 games. Blackwell would probably stick him in on the right instead of Ward, and we'd then return to the moments of last year when we had the slowest midfield in the history of football. I actually thought some of his best football emerged when he played up front when Hendo was out - I wouldn't be completely against that idea.

According to todays Mirror we are looking to bring him back after he fell out of favour with Wolves.
Of his many clubs Halford only ever seemed to be happy at BDTBL.

Linz would be happy.
