Anyone fancy a few beers to help support an old club through tough times?

The Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust have invited us Blades to their Beer Festival to be held at the end of the season (Sat 12th June). The invitation isn't being made to other clubs/forums and has come about as I've followed the Vics as my "second club" since college days in Cheshire - and am part of the "Voice of the Vics" Forum (but still as SheepdipBlade :D) - so we're quite privileged! Some of them seem to have developed a bit of a soft spot for us too - and I got some really nice posts in the lead up to Wembley last year.

The situation at the Vics is a bit rough -

Their last chairman, Mike Connett, took them away from their traditional ground at the Drill Field (which was the the oldest football ground in the world till they moved) to VS3 - ran the club into masses of debt - then closed the ground and sold off all the safety kit so the new owners couldn't use it. Vics then had to play at Altrincham - which would be like us having to play our home games at the Sty (Just take a minute to think how that would feel!)

The fans then got together to raise the £2000 needed to get the ground useable again - organised merchandise sales, sponsored walks (the last one was to the Wrexham game - they lost!) and the beer festival - a really good effort by some committed fans of a small club. Last year's beer festival was the first, and a real success and we've been invited to this year's follow up. It's a ticket only event due to safety limits at VS3 - and we've been given first refusal -£5,00 a ticket.

I'm planning on going to show our red and white stripes - and I'd love for us Blades to show our support for a proud old club that's struggling a bit.

So - if anyone would like to down a few pints to show a bit of support to the Vics - and a great set of fans - - then drop me a PM and we'll get something sorted out.

(Pez - the organiser at NVST is open to suggestions for beers, but you'll have a better chance if they have "green" in the name [as the Vics play in green and white hoops])

One for Darren - what was the score the last time we met the Vics in a competitive match? ;)

This year has been a bit better - mid table in the Conf North but with 10 points deducted for going into administration due to last years goings on - and also a transfer embargo - but monies from the Cup run and the TV. Beating Charlton must have been one hell of a day for them!!

Interesting stuff - hope it goes well.

Anyone go to the Sheffield FC versus Northwich FA Cup tie at BDTBL a few years ago? I did. Good game I seem to recall.

That game gets brought up nearly every time I post on their forum. Their fans seem to have had a great day and really enjoyed their time at BDTBL. I know some of them were on the padded seats in the South Stand - and I have pointed out to them that it's not like that throughout the ground - especially not in my corner of the Kop!

Just a bump for this... as an all-ticket event, they'd like to know final numbers :)

I think you can probably count Foxy and myself in... love a good beer festival.

Don't think we'll be driving home though :D

For anyone travelling from Sheffield, it takes around an hour and a half on the train with a change in Stockport.

Sorry Dippers, as a Witton man, %$^^%$ off!:D

Nice feature in When Saturday Comes this month if you've not seen it.

The thread on their Supporters Trust forum can be found HERE.

It'd be interesting if we could watch England lose while we're at it :D

The news from the Vics about the England game is --

Hi Sheepdipblade

Good to hear from you again & as you said we managed a win V Eastwood which was our first home game since mid December V Fleetwood (blasted weather !!) and it was great to start 2010 with a win.

I have seen that The Blades have managed to keep in the play off frame, so it looks like a good few months ahead for you.

Now back to the Beer Festival, the great news is the fact that our entertainment for the evening is the live World Cup Game on the 12/06/2010 of England V USA. There are a few TV's on the wall so the evening should be a good one & with food also available all needs are taken care of.
Please have a look at the official club web address www.northwichvics.co.uk go into news and media on top right, headline archive and go to the one about the beer festival which was added on the 11/01/2010 there is a link within the item for a poster advertising the event.

Let me know if all will be ok for you and let me know how many tickets may be required, I am now getting a few PM's re tickets & they go on sale tomorrow night at the ground.

Pez.

So far we have 10 Blades signed up - and I hope to let Pez know our final number by the end of this week - - so if you fancy supporting a little club through tough times, and having a few beers along the way - AND watching the England game - - then drop me a PM in the next couple of days!!

Have you tried a few of the local breweries for kegs of ale? Think there is a shop just off abbey dale road too that sells ales...
I fancy it, ill see if teh floss is going...

That'll be the Archer Road Beer Shop. They have a few handpumps as well, so you can take your containers in, and get some real ale carry outs .....

When I lived on Abbeydale Road doing my 'A' levels, it was called "Small Beer", and we went there quite a lot ..... ahem .....

Been in recently? Whats it like for price and variety?

Nice one people! We're up to (unlucky) 13 - be nice to get one more!!

3 are friends and family of Cheshire Blade - but that's at least 9 from our side of the hills. Worth looking into hiring a minibus and driver?

I'll send Pez at Vics Supporters Trust the details on fri - and in the meantime see what he can suggest about places to stay over near VS3 (to give us another option) and what he wants to do about our suggestions for beers.

Thanks for the support folks - sure that NVST will appreciate it - - and a dozen Blades shirts will make a nice statement on the day too.

For me the fact that we are up for trekking across the Pennines to support a little club (though the beer and the England game helps for sure!!) makes me feel really proud to be a Blade! :)

Having a look at hotels, the closest one appears to be the Wincham Hall Hotel.

However, they have a midnight curfew. Now if I've been drinking strong ale from about 6pm, I'll be lucky to last until 10pm. But out of principle, I don't like the idea of staying in a hotel that reserves the right to lock you out if you stagger back at 00:01.

And with a trip advisor 65% not recommend rating, I think elsewhere would be better :D

Latest from Pez at Vics Supprters Trust

Hi Sheepdipblade

We are holding a meeting on the 4th of Feb with our bar manager and will be speaking to him re the beer choices. Last time we had the festival we had a "Pride of Cheshire" theme with all ales from Cheshire this time we are I hope going to look at our surrounding counties. We had two ciders and it is in the plan to have two this time.

Some of the beers you have mentioned are good ones, especially the Jaipur from Thornbridge.

We also have more of a link for Sheffield Utd and Northwich as one of my neighbours is a scout for you called Gilly Prescott.

There will be a raffle on the night so any contribution for a prize would be very welcome.

If you can provide me with a land line number I will call you re tickets.

Pez.

So Keenzy's cider's sorted out then - and we might get some Jaipur too!

Anyone know if our club might be up for donating a raffle prize for the Supporters Trust - and the best way of chasing this up??

Re places to stay -

There is also the option of the travel inn at The Woodpecker which I think is Northwich South in the listings for travel inn.

Hi Sheepdipblade

Have been onto your forum and registered on there, just waiting for moderator clearance.

Have been looking at the thread re the beer festival, saw the bit about the Wincham Hall Hotel (I forgot about them). They are so close to the ground that it would only take a good 15 min walk to get there.

I am sure that if there were a few of you to stay that you may be able to negotiate a good rate for the night there, saw the bit about trip adviser but there are hotels round the country that I am sure people have stayed at that are much worse. One thing though they are used quite a bit for weddings so could be booked up in June already.

Pez

Any thoughts or preferences??

Sorted :)

As for hotels, we'll try and hold some discussion this weekend.

Begging letter e-mailed to Mick!!

And apologies to Keenzy too. Your first pint of Jaipur is on me mate!! - And The One's cider too!!

Quite like your idea of getting Spire Brewery to make us a special mash. Are they the people who made "Dark Side of the Moon"?
