What ever the original words were or who ever sang it first, doesn't matter a fig, Annie's song is now officially ours in the public and medias mind and long may it be so.
Sing it loud and proud Blades fans because it's sums up for us, and all the fans who can't be with us, exactly how we feel about SHEFFIELD UNITED....... 👍👍👍

I learnt it as Thrill and that would have been sometime in the eighties and I think a lot of people sang it that way back then. It only doesn't "make sense" if you're going to insist that the last line returns to the meaning of the first line, which I think purists decided it must and insisted everyone sing "fill me again" and have seemingly won everyone over (by insisting that everyone who disagrees is thick and it doesn't make sense). But back in the eighties, we weren't quite so ruminative and just wanted our team to thrill us. We've already said that the team/club fills up our senses, given a few examples of other stuff we like, now we want to be thrilled. I mean, it's only a football chant, it doesn't have to circle back, it's not one of Bizet's lost works, is it?

So the only argument against “fill” is that it doesn’t have to make sense? Presumably the same applies to the partaking of maggots on a night out in Sheffield, rather than beer.

What's the last line of Annie's Song by John Denver?

You understand that the point of football songs is not to sing the original words, right? Or do you really think John Denver sang about chip butties?

The “Can’t help falling in love with you song” is a wrong un then?

Good point. Along with "You'll never walk alone" and a few others, I expect. You'll have to take it up with those who have a rule book about what's allowed and not allowed with football song lyrics.

:) The only one suggesting there are rules is you. Changing words etc.

Is it the line about Peak District and River Don?

Not really, I said the "point" was... It's a bit pedantic to claim I'm suggesting it's a rule. I'm saying I learnt it as 'thrill' and I don't follow the rule that the last line has to go back to the first line, or that the first and last line have to be the same as the original, or that 'thrill' is outrageous and shameful and evil. Sing fill, sing thrill, sing magnet, sing maggots, sing like a mountain in springtime...

You mentioned a rule book, but you’re getting a bit dramatic now :)

Can't be arsed with the daft 'thrill' arguments but it has always been 'Magnet' for me and my mates.
Nobody seems to have mentioned the Tramway on London Road, Sportsman on Denby St or the one all the bus drivers went in, in front of the Leadmill.
I lived in Crookes late 80s, so Masons, Florist, Fox and Duck plus Rising Sun at Nether Green.
Not as many pubs as Tetleys/Stones, but still plenty to be going on with.
