Wes kept us in it with two sublime saves. Be careful what you wish for.
Hi Stegosaurus here

He also jumped like an absolute fanny and cost us the game.
Nobody denies he can do some decent saves. But he can't do the basic stuff. He can't distribute. Deals with crosses worse than Dracula. Doesn't command his box. Doesn't organise his defence. Is prone to doing something fucktarded.

Can we wish for 3 saves?

Joking aside, I get your point and he’s been a great servant for the club and still makes top saves. But it’s the lapses in concentration, poor decision making and bad kicking that’s costing us at times. He was brought here as 2/3rd choice when we were last in this league.

If we want to progress, we need someone better. My option would be Johansson at Rotherham. Wouldn’t cost the earth and I’m guessing living local might help sway it, if he’s settled. BUT, all this is conjecture as we don’t really have a clue what finances we have available and we need some outfield players too.

I don’t hold any malice towards Wes and he’s been one of our best players for the past couple of years, but his flaws are regularly being exposed.

You might as well start 22 threads.... 11 for do we need a new [insert name of position] if we somehow stay up and another 11 for if we go back to the championship strapped for cash. Answer first one 11 x yes, second one 10 x no (assume Archer goes in either case and out of contracts re-sign if relegated).

Yes for me.

There's got to be a international loan with a view to buy keeper sat on a bench somewhere in Europe who is a better all rounder! I was a big defender of Wes earlier on this season I think he stopped more Newcastle's but he's in negative credit for me now unfortunately.

All. Goalkeeper make good even great saves, the defining thing with keepers is mistakes.
Wes through his career is renowned for his gaffs ! A good no 2 at best.
Hopefully Wilder and his staff have been looking at keepers we need a no 1

Someone like Robin Olsen?

We probably need to upgrade just about every single position so it's a pointless question, goalkeeper wouldn't be top of my list though.
They used to say you upgrade the positions which cost you points. This is generally central players.
I will say that our quest for left backs has hindered us this season and distracted us from urgent central recruitment.
I also feel at the bare minimum Wes should have had realistic competition for the place this season. Last year Adam Davies only just about managed to be an understudy in the championship, getting better after loads of shaky early performances. The risk level in playing him is huge.

On our list of current woes, GK is somewhere near the bottom... It's on there, but by god we need fresh blood in other areas much more than a new GK....
I keep reading this, though Wes is doing nothing to dispel a growing thought.

Killed the game CW Bournemouth, same vs Chelsea and you come and get it or you stay back and don’t. But if you fail to get it after you do come, then it’s your fault.

A bit of an unfair question really. Need, or want?
You could look at any position and say 'yes' to needing someone new (by new, I assume you mean someone better)
Until we have a team of the best players in the world for their position, the answer will always be 'yes'
I think the fairer question would be to ask what the priority is/are for a club with limited funds.

I think the next few weeks will tell us. He kept us in a lot of games early in the season. Now he has what looks like a solid team in front of him, if we start losing games from consistent errors then we might be looking. When you see keepers like onana costing millions and still costing goals, I think I would rather spend our few quid elsewhere

Wes’ recent performances and decision making are pushing it up the scale. It’s certainly gone from would consider and wouldn’t mind a new keeper to this now being a serious discussion point. Only Wes can change that. But he cost us two points today because he made a decision and it was the wrong one and it contributed to a goal.

We need a new starting XI to compete in the PL. I don't think one of our players is up to the standard, they wouldn't start for anyone else. Everyone knows Wes isn't a PL standard keeper but we're skint and he's decent.

I was of that view in 2019 maybe only JoC I was worried about someone poaching and of course hendo who was on loan. Having a good keeper is probably worth more points than anything other than a 20+ goal a year striker

Agree. We had momentum and a tactical edge that season that allowed us to bridge the gap.

This season we don't have either, and we have an owner less likely to spend who wants out. Wes was a good keeper in the champ, so we won't buy a new one imo.

Your GK costing you a goal most games isn't so bad when it just turns a 3-0 defeat into a 4-0 but now we appear capable of keeping the score down, it will start to cost us points. And you don't want to lose points because then you don't get as many points

Whether we should get a new GK depends on what's available but ideally we'll be able to do something, while still bringing in at least 3 outfield players

Hi Stegosaurus

Stops that every other keeper in the league could make. Nothing spectacular enough to make up for his shitness in other areas.
Two or Three premiership class players in the window would be money better spent than a keeper

What we need to do is a get a keeper who is not first choice in another country and give him time to adapt.

And how many point was /is a good keeper worth a season ?
Our priority is a keeper last night again ours costs us his command of his area and space is very poor consistently
Look at his perfect position to react in his area if needed prior to the ball being played into the box
Then watch his slow reaction and feet
he should have got there first but he got there last

Thought first half he kept a great starting position and swept up well. Few more good saves again. In a one on one I'd be really happy with him.

He is notably poor with his feet though. And he's a keeper you wouldn't bank on not making at least one howler/ head in hands moment a game.

We need another quality keeper, not necessarily to replace Wes, but to put more pressure in Wes. Got to be Johanson from Rotherham. I know I've probably spelt that wrong!
