Do we need a new one?
If you’re asking if we need to upgrade a player then surely the answer is always “yes”, until we’ve signed someone like prime Buffon. We should always be looking to upgrade in every single position, that’s the sign of a club that wants to progress.

Affording it is an entirely different matter.

I was more interested to see how high up the list of priorities a new goalkeeper would be. Some of the errors Wes has made this season dont really matter when we’re in the process of getting spanked anyway, but given now we appear to actually be competing in games, its actually going to be costing us points as opposed to just goals.

Tbf, it isnt just Wes. Every one of our backline is capable of a brain fart of epic proportions. Baldock was at it last night for the disallowed goal and that VAR check really got him out of jail.

The closest outfield comparison I can think of is when Robinson was having his bad spell last season
Wes is like that but in goal

Changing keeper is nice in theory but Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Forest all did it and in each case, the player they brought in is absolute dogshit and/or cost them quite a few points. Unless we get another left footer, we'd inevitably concede a few sloppy goals because of players passing back to the wrong foot. Burnley spent a fortune on Trafford but probably don't have any more points than if they'd just stuck with Muric.

Do you seriously think that our defence are that stupid that they would ignore a "pass backs to my right foot please" request from a new keeper given in the first training session? Or that the incoming keeper would be that useless with his left foot that he can't make a decent attempt to clear a ball then bollock the defender? Christ, I'm not even Sunday league standard but if someone gives me a ball on my wrong foot I can at least slice it into touch to clear pressure

Are you Hecky or McCall in disguise?

When Wes first got in the team players were routinely putting it on his wrong foot and he made a meal of it, every time Davies has played since Wes has been a regular he always gets a few to his wrong foot because players forget, so based on watching our defence play, yes they are that stupid and it has cost us a couple of goals in the past.

Having watched Simo after growing up on a series of great goalies, it was then I realised goalkeeper was the most important position on the pitch.

I thought we should have signed Johansson last time Rovrum were relegated. Whether he’s value for money now given our other shortfalls, I’ll happily defer to Wilder to decide.

2 points on this another created weekly thread. Firstly if we look to replace where is the money coming from he does ok and can pull off some outstanding saves. Look at all the excitement that came with Olsen arriving on loan just because he was at Roma at the time. As with Johansson I don’t know where the obsession is with him, same height as Wes, fair enough if you were replacing him with a 7ft monster. Johansson isn’t proven in the Premiership and currently at a bottom of the table Championship side

I keep reading this, though Wes is doing nothing to dispel a growing thought.

Killed the game CW Bournemouth, same vs Chelsea and you come and get it or you stay back and don’t. But if you fail to get it after you do come, then it’s your fault.
Dont get me wrong, i sadly don't think he's up to PL standard.

However, his deficiencies reflect a lot of our team where the game is just too fast, too intense for him. Like most of the outfield players too, the ball is a bit potato, to be feared whenever it comes near you....

However, if we're spunking money, would much rather have more legs in centre mid, and/or fullbacks who can both stop a cross but also not shit their pants when they cross the halfway line - long before I'd get a new GK...

Any keeper facing 25 shots per game and all the other involvement that comes with playing for a team as bad as we have been so far, will inevitably make the odd mistake.

Shoring up what's in front of him means we'll see less of that, and goalkeeper won't be a priority.

I hope.
Whilst this holds a certain amount of truth, shot stopping isn't his weak point. It's his decision making and application that worries me. The screw up the other week when it was easier to boot the ball into the stands, he puts his foot on it , loses it and costs us a goal. Unfortunately most of his mistakes prove costly.

Wow, you are having a moment of clarity here, I can only assuming you are taking your medication again. 😂 Absolutely spot on with your analysis.

Aye
Like Hamer’s job was to stay on his feet
Like Bogle’s job was to get closer (block the cross)
Like Trusty’s job was to attack the cross

NB - NOT a dig @ any of the above
If the keeper shouts for the ball and comes charging out, Trusty’s job is to get out of his way so he doesn’t clatter the keeper.

I’ve always seen Wes as a bit of spectator when it comes to reading the game. He does have a tendency to switch off in games, especially when we were dominating in the Championship. Unfortunately in the Prem you have be switched on all the time. He’s a great reactive keeper saving us on many occasions, but he in not so good at marshalling his defenders and preempting potential danger. All top goalies try to keep themselves involved, even if they’re not. Look at the Villa keeper, he was virtually on the half way line looking to receive a bloody pass.

Aye
Or
Trusty is close enough to his man & (or) aggressive enough to challenge / compete with / beat Zaniollo (“shout for” / “charge at” the ball” ?!?!)
Ultimately it was a quality cross that ‘created’ hesitation/ indecision / confusion

Are we realistically going to sign anyone better? He’s a decent championship goalkeeper which is the market we’ll be shopping in.
Unless you’re willing to pay big wages and bring in a premier league reserve like Karius or Rodak it’s pointless.
People were on about the Rotherham keeper who still can’t get a game for Sweden because of Robin Olson
