Results in games that Sharp did not start this season (he came on as sub in all of them):

Birmingham L 0-1
Huddersfield L 1-2 (Sharp scored after coming on)
Barnsley W 3-2 (Mousset 2, Osborn scored)
Blackpool L 0-1
Forest D 1-1 (MGW scored, Sharp assist after coming on)
Reading W 1-0 (Bogle scored)
Bristol City W 2-0 (Brewster scored the first, Sharp scored the second after coming on)

So last night's starting line up contained one player who has scored when Sharp did not start, and of course that goal came from a Sharp assist.

Looking at it the other way, we have scored one goal this season after Sharp has been subbed - the own goal against Peterborough.

If Sharp does not start on saturday, I will be annoyed. I have no confidence in this team scoring the number of goals we need to make the top 6 without him.

30 games played. Also 30 games without a goal for McBurnie.

Conor Hourihane played 19 league games for Swansea last season on loan. He scored 5 times. This season he's played 19 league games for us, and....

Oliver Norwood 79 games, last goal v Watford (pen) 2019-20
George Baldock 71 games, last goal v Norwich 2019-20
Enda Stevens 56 games, last goal v Brighton 2019-20
Oli McBurnie 30 games, last goal v Leicester 2020-21
Conor Hourihane 19 games, no league goals.
John Fleck 17 games, last goal v Peterborough 2021-22
Ollie Burke 15 games, last goal v Man Utd 2020-21
Luke Freeman 15 games, no league goals
Rhys Norrington-Davies 13 games, no league goals
Surely Berge goes onto this list now...

George's wonder strike, his first goal for 26 months and 71 games, takes him off the list.

There is a strong argument that the generosity of the Swansea keeper should have seen Norwood off it to, but his inaccuracy moves him onto 80 games without a league goal. Sander's doziness when presented with the ball by the keeper also sees him back on the list.

Oliver Norwood 80 games, last goal v Watford (pen) 2019-20

Was actually Grimes not the keeper who gifted Norwood his opportunity.

Thanks for keeping this updated tho!

Aren't you counting the CB's?

You will obviously know all this, however Robinson scored v Luton, Egan scored twice v Hull, but Bash's last league goal was the 'Basham arriving' goal at Leeds in 2019. Davies is yet to register too. Being as they all go up for set pieces, there's no reason why they shouldn't contribute more.

Never counted any CBs as I felt it was a bit unfair (though people have complained about the inclusion of wing backs).

Would never complain about the info you provide, but I do think the CB's have as much opportunity as the WB's or even the likes of Norwood and Fleck to get on the scoresheet.

Why is Oliver Norwood the go to man for shots from outside the box on set pieces? Why? What are the club expecting he's going to do?

Norwood has had 31 shots this season. Only 4 of them have been on target (thanks Beans for that stat on your pod)

Mind you, Fleck or Hourihane wouldn't do any better. Both now 20 games without a goal.

It's games like Saturday's where the problems of this non-scoring midfield and number 9 really become apparent. That starting line up, irrespective of why it was selected, was not a good bet to score at all, and so it proved.

I think you raise a good point.

When you think back on the whole moneyball concept, you make sure they as a collective have a collection of attributes.

Quite simply, do I have enough goals or chance creators in this XI? If not, then maybe the balance needs tweaking and that balance dictating the team selection.

While it is interesting that you highlight the goal scoring deficiencies of some of our defenders and deep lying players, the glaringly apparent deficiency of our non scoring CF is an embarrassment beyond words.

There will be a dozen or more half decent lads on the kop that would have contributed significantly more. Of that I have no doubt.

I’ve been banging on about this for years (and it’s not like I’m the only one). If you play midfielders who never score you aren’t going up. Compound the problem by putting McBurnie up front and what do you expect to happen?

We just have to get behind them and not moan?

Do you know when Norwood last scored from open play ?
It must be close to 100 games which for a midfielder is really poor.

Brentford 2018-9. That’s his only open play goal in the league.

One goal from open play in 128 league appearances. I would hazard a guess that there are goalkeepers playing today with better strike rates.

Contrast: 2 goals from open play in 10 cup appearances for us (against Millwall (FAC) & Blackburn (LC) in 2019/20)

That was on November 4th. Since then Norwood has played a further 16 games without scoring so he in on 1 goal from open play in 144 league games. The Brentford game was also (coincidentally) his 16th league game for us so he is now on no goals from open play in 128 appearances.

For a central midfielder that is frankly unacceptable.

For a lot of those 128 games, under Wilder’s formation, Norwood was theoretically a midfielder, but became the second most defensive player after Egan when we were on the attack with overlapping centre halves, so I don’t think it’s quite as unacceptable as the stats may suggest.
