But if I had to be picky at the 11th hour, I just want us to invest well in a striker. Either a young un from the top flight or someone from our league/below with a decent calibre.

Dicko
Bradshaw
Nmecha at City
Gallagher
Hogan
Any chuff

Sod it, Matt Smith, Freeman as an attacking mid - ANYONE.

Whilst we're at it, how dire is QPR's squad?!

So that rules out the likes of Freeman you would think. We definitely need a re-think in our transfer policy. We can't go for these top end Championship players because we get blown out of the water wages wise. It's going to have to be foreign or back to the lower leagues I think until the board room shit gets sorted.

I don't expect us to be going for top end Championship players. Waghorn is a top end player and as you say we've not being able to get the deal over the line. I expect we'll now go for either loans or Championship players who aren't in the first 11 at other clubs such as Cameron Jerome. You might not like it but I can see someone like that happening.

Wilder was delighted when they said there were closing the window early this year. Wonder if he's changed his mind now?

Yeah I think stop gaps are going to be only realistic option now. Upgrades on Donaldson.

I’m not sure we ever had a real go but I’m wondering if not going for Marriott is a mistake.

He scored a huge amount if goals, is young and the touted 6m looks more like 3m down and double IF Derby goes up, which will be Chicken feed if they do. Plus wages moving from League One would be manageable.

Failing that, Marcus Maddison would give options. He could be a more attacking left wing back or he could be attacking midfield and allow us to remove the question around Woodburn and have him as a forward. This would seem good planning for now and the future.

Don't worry about anything Wilder's said, he's developed a propensity to be less than truthful.

im predicting fridays interview to go something like,

we tried its disappointing but well have to go with what we've got.

We just won't pay the going rate for anyone decent.
Although I don't blame em on waghorn he's just not worth what derby are willing to pay.

In the star today:

‘I don't think we'll see anything happening, in or out, before the end of the permanent window now," he said. "Then we've still got a few more weeks (to negotiate loans).’

Not how it sounded on the interview saying we’ve got 2 permanent bids in...
Would be very disappointing if we don’t have any backup options to turn to, improving the top of the pitch was the most important thing all window

Not quite how it sounded in the interview - though but he genuinely didn’t sound confident of getting a permanent in.

I’m struggling to see how we’ve left it this late tbh - the writing was on the wall in waghorn at least a week ago with concrete interest from derby and boro....

We really should have been progressing fthe back up plans then not fucking about with 48 hours to go.

We won’t get a permanent in and by not getting the loans sorted out now it just means we’re back competing with all these other sides who haven’t done business.... more chance of getting blown out of the water again. We need to get something sorted sooner not wait for loan window imo.

I’m not sure that as promised ‘people will be pleased looking down the squad listing come the close of the transfer window’

‘the squad doesn’t look any stronger than last year tbh - we are certainly more susceptible to injuries then we were and have much less cover with all the loans out. Just hope it’s not another year of missed opportunity the sides coming down from the pl are only gonna get stronger each year.

I would have liked Waghorn and wouldn't of minded us spending a fee of up to £10m on him if we had that amount - it's the wages that he wants that would have crippled the club for 3 or 4 years and would have no doubt produced a fair amount of discontent with the players. So no thank you Waggers.

Again, I don't mind how much the initial outlay is for new players (if we have the wonga) it is only the TCO that would concern me. Fortunately we now have a management team that has their head screwed on and will not put the club at risk - unlike the Wendies :)

Purchase players on sensible wages even it if means this season is another consolidation season. Slowly build over the next 2 or 3 years and slowly lift the wage structure to compete with other clubs.

How anyone can expect us to arrive in the Championship after 6 years of exile and suddenly start chucking daft wages at players is beyond belief - we need to grow gradually, sensibly and just as importantly, fans must realise this and lower their expectations - for now.

UTMB as always (and sorry if this ruffles a few snow flakes out there  )

Which roughly translated to fanspeak means;

“we lost at the weekend”.

Nope. It started way before then. I'm not necessarily even criticising him, a lot of it is strategic and all managers do it. So don't be offended.

It's not only about being truthful either. Sometimes he'll say things loosely in interviews and some will assume it's set in stone, when it really isn't.

If we go into the season with 3 permanent strikers it's absolutely unforgivable.

Don't agree mate - what if we had 1 or 2 season long loans that were actually decent strikers? They shot us up into the play offs and then if (the unlikely happened) we got into the prem, wouldn't that have been better than paying for 2 permanent strikers on long contracts that we wouldn't use any more?

Loan deals are not always dead money deals as proved ok for Fulham and Mitrovic.

As we stand we are good enough for mid table I have no doubt whatsoever! Sorting the midfield regulars is a priority which by October I hope will consist of Duffy/Another, Fleck and Coutts/Another

Just because we started off with Lunny, Evans and Fleck does not mean we will be sticking with that for the whole season - on paper that simply does not work for us.

All I know now is that we have a fantastic management team with a very good squad (needs improving I know)

I know the Wendies say that they would not want anyone from our squad and in all seriousness I would not want any of theirs except maybe Joao - I don think we have a better squad!

Let's wait and see if we get any players in before deadline day but if not we look to the 3 weeks of the loan window which is not that bad imo.

UTMB

I haven't followed him much but 5/6 million for him I think is quite pricey I'd much prefer Roofe from Leeds.

I think he will actually do quite well at Derby and would have fitted in with us perfectly. Bound to score against us you see.

Had the exact same debate with a mate at the weekend:

Henderson no better than Blackman (loan)

McGoldrick - slightly better than Donaldson (Free)

Woodburn - replaces Brookes (loan)

Egan - only improvement and immediate impact on first 11. (Permanent)

The lad from Man City - not an immediate starter (free)

This window I give a 5/10 as we have remained the same strength wise.

2 strikers of quality will make it an 8/10.

It will be unforgivable to go in to the season with what we have up top and should have been first priority above all others.

And at present we haven’t given it a proper go in the market and don’t be fooled by the £4mil for Egan as that should be well within our means given the sale of Brooks.

Of course it could have been a whole lot worse given the ownership war.

We are no better than 15th at present in my opinion and haven’t strengthened the starting 11 nearly enough.

I don't think we've done bad business upfront so far replaced Donaldson with Mcgoldrick and changed our loan striker last season Wilson for Woodburn, I would prefer a player like Freeman who would feed some nice through balls to Sharp,Clarke,Mcgoldrick,Woodburn, rather than another striker fighting for the other spot along side Clarke for us all to whinge about when wilder doesn't take Clarke off like last season and the first game I think he should have come off instead of Mcgoldrick but hey ho onwards and upwards in Wilder I trust.

The next three days determines if its a good window or not. However, I'm still optimistic and I think we'll push play offs this season. I'm probably on my own here but I think Saturday won't reflect how we will do this season. Once Coutts comes back and Woodburn finds his feet then I think we'll be a match for most teams. We do desperately need another forward though.

He might do I can't believe they where buying Waghorn in replacement for Vydra who was supposed to be Leeds bound Vydra was brilliant last season, wages wise we can't compete with the big dogs so if it's not meant to be that's fine by me hopefully he plays shite against us to give us something to talk about lol.

I didn't see it like that at all.

He's saying that Wilder has played his cards close to his chest before when it comes to transfer talk.

Apologies, I may well have lazily swept you up with the rest of the utterly cringeworthy meltdown (by the increasing band of football snowflakes) currently in play.

I wholeheartedly agree with all that you say, great post, until that last point. I think we'll finish slightly higher up but then miss out on the playoffs anyway. 9th/10th for me.

So, it's the old .......we're saving the £12m (-£4m for Brooks) until the January window. That club speak for BT flu, well moan, clappers will cry negative, McCabe will say used to keep club running. Same old.

Or

It could all be a ruse and we have got 2 perm and 2 loan incoming. Well, McCabe did tell the lad in the selfie we already had one sorted so it must be true.
