Would be good to see Bash getting forward a bit more if he can reproduce the flying header from 5-5 at Swindon.

I thought there were more glimpses last season with his goals against Donny and Walsall. I think if he's given the encouragement to make those runs, he could get more goals. Particularly now we have Duffy to supply some crosses.

I agree with all your points. The problem we have is that midfielders that tick all the required boxes aren't coming to the third division.

UTB

I disagree. There are players out there:

Sam Mantom would have been a choice, I'd regard him as more defensive minded than Fleck with not quite the same creativity but he still has a better goal record and I believe he's physically more suited to the Wilder style. He went to Scunthorpe, so achievable had we of been inclined.

Yaser Kasim is still at Swindon and in the last year of his contract. He would be expensive in both wages and I imagine Swindon would still want a decent fee, but given he's widely regarded as the best midfielder in the league, it might be worth the money.

Like I say, I'm not distraught that were signing Fleck, just not convinced he'd be my first pick.

I understand kasim but not mantom, however neither are the left footed player wilder was looking for. It seems to me looking at his Northampton ins and outs that it's all about the system, a bit like Spurs. Poche what's his face talks about balance in the same way. Has two left sided cbs and dembele would play the role fleck is likely to play. The goals are in the front 4. The midfield 2 keep the ball moving

On 31 January 2009, Fleck was involved in a late-night brawl in a nightclub in Glasgow's City centre even though Fleck was just 17 years old at the time.[38] On 2 August 2009 it was revealed that Fleck had been dropped from the Rangers first-team after a training ground bust-up involving a bucket of chicken, with the then assistant manager Ally McCoist.[39][40]

True, the left foot angle is an advantage I hadn't really considered to be fair.

I disagree about Basham sitting deep. He doesn’t have the discipline to play as a holding midfielder and likes to go chasing the ball. Even when partnered with Baxter, Baxter played deep letting Basham press opponents. He’s also shown glimpses of an ability to arrive late in the box to meet crosses.

I’m quite comfortable with Basham playing in central midfield. The problem was that he was the only one of our midfielders capable of playing there in a 442. Whoever partnered him didn’t the legs for it meaning we got overrun. If we can give him a good athletic partner, it could work.

I agree, that Bash needs someone with an engine around him maybe someone like Scougall. That might work but no doubt Fleck will be a certain starter. I would hope so anyway! I think Fleck gives it a good shift from what I can gather.

I don't know anything about Fleck but the other lot scored a grand total of 3 league goals between them last season - all by Basham.

We are desperate for some sort of end product from centre midfield.

Oh for a younger Michael Brown! I reckon in Fleck we will see more drive from the midfield, more bite and hopefully Fleck will run the midfield, like a younger Stewart McCall. Now that would be something!

Mowbray confirmed John Fleck has decided to reject a new contract with the Sky Blues to join Sheffield United.

The 24-year-old is expected to be confirmed by the Bramall Lane club later today.

He said: “Is it disappointing? He knew how much we wanted to keep him. He wanted to go to the league above but he’s gone to a club with a greater resource than us.
”Let’s see how he goes there. If they have the resource to tempt him that appears to be what’s happened."

I don't think Fleck has been brought in as a left sided midfilder. He's been brought in as the left sided centre mid. Wilder talked about needing both. I'd love Danny Mayor of Bury and since they're min trouble financially, we might be able to get him.

Interesting what he says about resources, because Coventry are hardly paupers in this league. Maybe we've gone above 5k p/w week for him. If that is the case, I have no real problem with that as long as it's not silly money - and I know Wilder wouldn't allow that - he's a high calibre player and will be an asset.

Sorry for the confusion, that is what I meant left side central midfielder like dembele

Ricky, Mowbray probably used 'resources' to mean more than just salary.
He probably meant other things such as fan-base, ground and training facilitiesand maybe even "potential"

We need Scougal in the first team squad like we need a case of typhoid ........

What we need is a big, strong, athletic, box-to-box midfield player who can tackle, head the ball, shoot and pass ....... imho.

I agree, but we probably won't get that and what I'm saying is that Scougall has the energy to fit into Wilders style. In his half season when he first joined we all thought we had a gem with Scougall.

That's correct Booker4, the first impressions were more than favourable, and for a little 'un he seemed fearless, note the goal at Wembley. So something caused the pale impersonation of Scoogs to take a grip, and it's down to CW to see if he can re-discover the form he showed when he joined us. Same goes for Done, down the middle, with a passport to roam when he felt like it, he looked electric and scored almost at will. So another player who needs to be played to his strengths rather than used as an 'experiment'.
