United's Youth team travel to Halifax for the 2nd Rd of the FA Youth Cup tonight.

The winners will have a trip to Preston North End in the 3rd Rd as their reward.

Halifax have already beaten Staveley, Stocksbridge PS, Guiseley, AFC Fylde and York City to get to this stage.

United beat Crewe in the 1st Rd.

As in the past couple of seasons for those of you who are interested, I will be posting regular updates as the action unfolds.

It promises to be wet, windy and freezing, the way games are meant to be. ;)

For any interested people in the Youth Cup it would have been nice if the club gave the game a bit higher profile..... For the normal SUFC Supporter there is nothing on the official website, not that i would be as foolish as to think people will go.I am sure though they would have been interested to know the game was even taking place

I would expect to see a similar team as the one that played Crewe, although i have a feeling Semple and Mallon may come in to the starting line up after injury.

Its absolutely lashing it down here. 10 minutes gone.

Team. Perryman charlesworth cantril gilmour graham semple smith slater burton hallam mallon subs cummings warhurst ford greaves parkhouse.

Half chance for halifax 16 mins blazed over

Preceded by Hallam. Header from close range. Just got under it.

Agreed. Conditions didnt help first half but once the second went in at the beginning of the 2nd, the boys settled down.

Very good result last night in shocking conditions.

Very comfortable all round as we should expect from this bunch.....

My only grumble was that in the first half 3 or 4 of the lads seemed to think the game was going to be a walk in the park. Far too many players trying to do it themselves. Once they started to get it down and play 2 or 3 touch they looked excellent and really could have had double figures.

Perryman in goal was never needed but, the goal was poor and his kicking from hand and ground really needs working on. As the boys go further in the competition i fear this could be a weak spot in the team. I watched young Warhurst in goal against Forest last weekend and he was fantastic. A first year scholar, but a cracking lad.

The back four of Semple, Graham, Charlesworth and Cantrill were solid as a rock. Winning headers, stong in the tackle and generally were far too much for the Halifax attack. At some points they seemed to know what runs the attackers were going to make before the attackers even made them.
This back four then made it easy for the midfield and forwards to fill their boots........ and enjoy their football.

Slater, Gilmoor, Mallon, Smith were sharp and kept the game going at a good tempo. Slater bursting forward and winning tackles, Gilmoor ticking the game along and linking play with the attack. Smith was like a whippet getting in behind his marker and scoring a lovely goal. Mallon looks quality, floats over the ground with great feet, he excites.... but he needs to learn when enough is enough and release the ball. a very frustrating player to play with i imagine but he is quality.

Hallam and Burton linked play up very well and were a threat throughout. Great runs all along the front line, turning defenders and creating a very uncomfortable evening for the Halifax back line, and Hallam didn't score!!

In my opinion Charlesworth was excellent at right back to be honest. He won every header and dominated his winger, who was probs their best threat in attack.

I wont swear but it was ffffff freezing !!! Just thought i would put that in.

Really enjoyed it though.

Was Cummings injured?

Was Cummings injured?
He was on the bench so not injured.

With Semple being out for 3 weeks I think Cummings got a chance with u23s and Grimsby.

Maybe just a little reality check for him ..... To keep his feet on the ground.
I would expect the further the team goes in the youth cup Semple and Cummings will play together at centre back.

The youth team seems to keep playing a back four, despite the first team's switch to 3-5-2. Any thoughts on this?

Fine with me. Most of the u18s wont ever play for our first team anyway. It is more important for the u23s to play the same system as our 1st team

I think the U23s have also been playing a back four though? From what I've seen I think we can hope to see more of quite a few from Ramsdale, Cummings, Semple, Gilmour, Slater, Hallam, Graham and Charlesworth at first team level (not writing the others off either).

I'm still not convinced CW will stick to 352 in the long term though. It got Cotterill out of this league but Bristol City struggled trying to play it in the championship. I think you need good players for the level you're at to make it work.
So I don't think we should rush to change the u-23s yet. I think central defenders and midfielders develop better in a 442 as they have more individual responsibility.

I'm a big believer in 4 at the back. Reading Larkymasher's report, Charlesworth contained their main threat leaving us free to attack at will
I think full backs should be defenders 1st, & need to develop positioning sense. Unfortunately in over 40 years at the lane I've seen too many frustrated wingers at full back

You must have loved Gary Naysmith. A fullback whose positional sense was so acute he never bloody moved...

If you are a good centre back in a back four, you should be a very good centre back in a back 3...........
