Emil Bohinen — son of former Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County star Lars — has started a week-long trial with Sheffield United as he attempts to follow his father into the Premier League.

The 20-year-old midfielder with Norwegian club Stabaek will be with the Yorkshire club until Friday in a bid to impress manager Chris Wilder.

The younger Bohinen has also been linked with Brighton & Hove Albion, Sheffield United’s opponents on Saturday, but they currently have no plans to offer him a similar opportunity at the Amex.

Lars Bohinen, speaking exclusively to The Athletic, said: “He’s actually training with Sheffield United today (Monday). He is going to be there until Friday.

“I’ve only heard [about Brighton’s interest] through his agent. He said there has been some contact, but he hasn’t received an invitation yet. I am assuming that might be coming.

“I’ve only heard [about Brighton’s interest] through his agent. He said there has been some contact, but he hasn’t received an invitation yet. I am assuming that might be coming.
“I know there has been a Belgian club interested and a couple of Norwegian clubs as well.”
Emil Bohinen scored four goals in 28 league appearances this season for Stabaek, helping them to an eighth-placed finish in Eliteserien, the top tier in Norway.
He has been a member of Stabaek’s first team squad since 2017 and has a year left on his contract.
He has represented Norway from under-17 to under-21 level and Lars believes his son has a big future in the game.
“He is not a big boy, quite thin,” Lars said. “He moves well, is quick on the ball, has a good understanding of the game. He has a good left foot, his passing range is good.
“He can also drive past people with the ball at his feet. Defensively he has improved a lot over the last 12 months, which has been maybe the most important part of his game to develop.”
Lars, now 50, played in English football for eight years from 1993 to 2001, during which time he helped Forest win promotion to the then-Premiership in 1994.
He scored 15 goals in a total of 179 league appearances for his three English clubs and also scored 10 times in 50 senior matches for his country, whom he represented at the 1994 World Cup.
Lars said of Emil: “We are a little bit the same. I would say I was probably more of a dribbler. Maybe my offensive contribution was a little bit better, but he is a little bit more of a team player than I was.
“His contract expires in a year. I think in the January window probably something will happen. It’s no disaster if it doesn’t happen, but he wants to move on.
“His development has been so good in the past year that he wants that to continue. He needs a little bit more of a challenge.”
Lars, a former sporting director of Stabaek, has managed second-tier side Aalesund since December 2017. He has just steered them to promotion into the top flight, 14 points clear of their closest rivals.

It’s time to at last restore the Norwegian core of the club. Sign him up. There must be a few Flos knocking about too, get them in. JAF’s lad up in Scotland – sign him. Anyone know if Anders Jacobsen has relatives in football? If so, they’ll be the first in that particular family.

He's made great progress this year. He made his debut very early (aged 16) and being the son of Lars his name has been noticed for quite a while, but this has been his break through season. It may be an ideal time to sign him for a reasonable price, but he's said he doesn't want to go somewhere to play U23 football.

Could he be one to sign on a long term deal and then loan out to a Championship side until the summer? (Maybe Derby, given his Dads connection?). Get some games under his belt at a decent level then decide over pre-season whether he’s ready to challenge for a place or another loan.

It's an interesting point you raise KO. We all know how much CW admires the Bournemouth model - I wonder whether CW now feels he has sufficient resources to enable him to take a punt on youngsters such as Bohinen and see if he develops into a Prem level player.

Of course they don't all come off off but if he could be signed for a reasonable fee (someone please define reasonable for such a player - maybe £2m??) then maybe it would be a decent bet - just as Bournemouth did with Ramsdale a few years ago.

Its something I was hoping for. I completely get that we must prioritise the first team right now. And its probably fair to say we don't have spare cash to just chuck at 10 prospects, so we’ve got to be realistic- we cant just swagger in and nick the Championships best yoofs for £20m each.

But- I’d have liked to see 2 or 3 “ones for the future” come in. Whether thats from lower leagues or abroad. Thinking of the type of thing we did with Nathan Thomas, Ben Heneghan, Harrison McGahey, etc.

Now I know they are hardly a shining example of success- but the point is, we’d now be fishing in a much higher quality pond than we were then. Right idea- wrong players. Our scouting is much better now as well.

Then we decide- are they competing for a first team place right off the bat? Do we loan them out? Are they better off playing with our U23s for a while to get a guage on them/integrate them into our style?

If we loan them, the other team pays a percentage of wages anyway. Then it goes two ways; if we stay up and consolidate in the Prem and it doesnt work out for the player, then we can probably move them on and- if we’re smart- recoup a large fee back as they are a “Premiership Star”. Then again, if we stay up long term, losing a few quid on some kids will be a drop in the ocean.

But if things do go tits up and we end up back down in the Champ, then we’ve potentially got 2 or 3 players with some decent league experience ready to step into the team.

Sheffield United want to sign Norwegian midfielder Emil Bohinen from Stabaek. The 20-year-old - who is the son of former Nottingham Forest, Derby and Blackburn midfielder Lars Bohinen - has also held talks with Leeds United.(Teamtalk)

Blades manager Chris Wilder says he is targeting "two or three" new signings in the January transfer window. (BBC Sheffield)

Someone has beaten you to it. Last Monday ......

It would not be pleasant if Leeds were to take him from under our noses.

Looks ok on his 2019 YouTube vid. He’s definitely got the “Ping”. neat passer and good vision. But it really all depends on the level he’s playing at and if he can step up to the Prem.

He's a young lad so would come in as a development player .Wouldnt be nowhere near the 1st team initially .Standards in Norway are way below ours.

Obviously I am very bored at the moment but from the video clips of him he looked a great prospect.
Am I right in thinking we are no longer interested?

Not much being said in Norwegian media, his club have said they are talking to a few clubs.

Simply not good enough from you Bergs, we expect much, much better from the likes of yourself regards info. 😁

Nothing even on Stabæk's fan forums. He may be one we doubt would make an immediate impact and may not be our main target. I'd be a bit surprised if it happened in this window when it hasn't already. Maybe it could change if we don't get any of the other midfielders we've been linked with and we decide to make a signing or two for the future instead. There are other clubs interested though, Leeds being one.
