I took my car into Rotherham town centre for an MOT recently and mulled about for a few hours. I'm not even taking the piss, because it wasn't funny. The place is tragic. Barely an open business to be seen and a lot of people that you'd go nowhere near. Really quite sad

I used to work at GT Leisureworld in the Cascade Centre which I loved because the shop was excellent, the staff were a fabulous bunch, and there was a brilliant record shop nearby.

I think most of Sheffield has improved significantly since the 70's. It's the shopping element (with associated local streetscape) that's on its' arse. There's hundreds of millions being invested to improve that at least - let's hope it works.

The public realm work is outstanding - created a really nice environment. Retail is downsizing anyway so some ways Sheffield could steal a march as most centres move towards leisure, the cultural sector and the nighttime economy. Retail isn’t the anchor of the city centre anymore.

What Sheffield needs is more and better employment opportunities and to capitalise on the spend of the two big Universities. With little cash floating around it’s difficult. It needs to connect the centre more easily in terms of pedestrian and public transport to Ecclesall Road. Improve the public transport access from the South West into the city to draw the spend in. All of these are difficult without some clover from central Government admittedly but would unlock a huge amount of private sector investment.

The only reason to go to Nottingham centre was for Brown Betty's and that's gone now. Nights out in Nottingham used to be very good around the Hockley area, the city centre pubs were a dive, not sure if it's changed.

Me and my good lady enjoy going on city breaks we have been too loads Manchester, Derby, Lincoln, Liverpool, Hull, Beverley, Cleethorpes, Blackpool, Newcastle, York, Leeds, London, (Yes I know some are not cities). And Nottingham which is the only place we have been too that we felt it was going too kick off, it wasn't just in one pub as well that was in the city centre.
Nice Indian meal though.

I would say connecting the city centre to Ecclesall Road has always been easy by walking or Public Transport. You can't really make walking any easier and loads of buses come down Ecclesall Rd (probably not as many that did in the 80's though). I also don't think Ecclesall Rd is the place it was in the 80's seems to have gone down hill, empty buildings and coffee shops.
People still want to shop in the city centre but the council have made it difficult to come to the city centre in the car with blocking the roads off, and this has to take some blame for the decline in retail in the city centre along with the cost of Parking.
They seem hell bent on bullying everyone to use public transport.
There is no way I am coming into the city centre on the bus/Tram to shop then back on the Bus/Tram with a few bags of shopping that will then take 1 hour and then a 10min walk from the bus/tram stop before I get home, when I could do the same journey in a car in 25min with the added bonus of not having to share with somebody who doesn't know what soap or deodorant is or is coughing their guts up without covering their mouth.
My wife and her Mum love shopping and tend to go most Saturdays but don't come to the city centre anymore they would sooner go to Parkgate, Chesterfield, Meadowhall, Crystal Peaks, Doncaster.
Personally I cannot remember the last time I bought anything from the city centre other than food.
The council are certainly not helping to draw the crowds in. And trust me when the clean air zone comes in it will only be a matter of time before they start charging cars.
I believe they also now want to close the the North bound section of Arundel gate up to the Novatel hotel to cars.

There’s only the Trafford Centre it’s on a par with, and Manchester has always been far bigger than Sheffield. There’s no way a Nottingham, Leicester-size city could comfortably have both.

I think they’ve got it right be pushing so much city centre living. Sheffield (centre) has grown (precentage wise) more than any other city in recent years.

Let’s hope the the major new investment in the centre can give more people a reason to go there.

Wasn’t meadowhall set up by the non-elected Sheffield Development Corporation? As far as I remember they were a government quango given millions of pounds of central govt. money and full control of planning in Lower Don Valley in the late 1980s. The council were completely bypassed.
Think someone on the quango had some business interests not too far away from what ended up being built - which seems likely given links to Tory party.
Good or bad, there was nothing council could do about Meadowhall.

The city centre was always a dive at night, no different to other places where Wetherspoons and Yates’ are though in my experience. Most cities have these slightly out of town areas that are much better and less chav filled. Nottingham and Sheffield are no different in that regard.

The wife used to religiously go to Sheffield city centre on Saturday mornings to go round the shops but stopped a few years ago because she no longer feels safe on High St and Fargate she says too many street drinkers and druggies, then there are the beggars and dossers in the doorways. Bad enough that then at one time you couldn't walk down Fargate without being asked to do a survey or sign up to some charity. If you go to town shopping you don't want to be harassed or intimidated everywhere you go. She now goes to Crystal Peaks or Meadowhall who have security to in the main keep these undesirables away, also I see what she means when she no longer likes using the bus after my experience going home from the match took me 1 hour and a half to get from Bramall lane to Handsworth due to a X5 not turning up I couldn't get on the one that did it left people to wait another hour for the next bus. I tried the X54 by 5.30 the departure board said "service not available" the next buses would depart at 6.20pm. Not willing to wait another 50 mins I walked up to Arundal gate to find I had missed the 30 the next one would be after 6.30pm not to worry I thought the 52's are regular well they are until you want one then there is a gap and two come at the same time. A delightful 30 min trip down the Wicker to take in the stench of Southern fried chicken and Kebab shops before Staniforth road and the stench of curry at every bus stop. 6.20pm when I got in our house which is four miles from the lane if you take a direct route.
