What is the solution to these two, as they don't seem to be able to play together at this level? There's no communication between them and it's causing costly errors. They were awful yesterday until Egan went off injured, where suddenly the back three started to look more composed and Ahmedhodzic improved. Arguably, perhaps the same might have been said of Egan is Anel had gone off injured, or does this point to Egan being the problem?
A combination of a poor understanding, lack of communication and ball watching saw them at fault for the goals against Palace, Forest and now against Everton yesterday.
I've rewatched yesterday's goals and I can't figure out just what they were thinking, particularly on the equaliser.
As the cross is about to come in both have players to mark. Egan has already abandoned his man and decided to attack the cross, even though Jack can do that. This leaves Anel in a 2 on 1. Egan doesn't even consider the situation he's created.
As the cross comes in Egan has committed to this, but bizarrely Anel also decides to attack the ball. He abandons both Everton players and runs forward towards the ball, leaving both of them to peel off to attack the back post. He has no intention of staying with either of them.
The ball sails over them both to two unmarked Everton players giving Wes no chance. Worse yet, if Wes does save it the other is there for the rebound, as is another Everton player heading towards the penalty spot unmarked, while two red and white shirts are nowhere near and not marking anyone. Before the cross comes in two are marking him. As the cross comes in, both abandon him. There's even a fourth player behind him who no one picks up from start to finish. It's a calamity of errors from all over the place.
Lack of communication all round?
It's amateur and I've seen better defending at kids football. Both are at fault and it's the same error that they made for both Forest goals. Both players intent on attacking the ball and leaving players unmarked as a result. It's all well and good blaming players for not preventing the cross, but if you can't do basic man marking then you will get punished every single time at this level.
Are they coached to play like this? If they are then the coach needs sacking.
My worry is who do you drop and who do you replace them with? It's all well and good saying play Trusty, but clearly he's pencilled in the left side slot. So that leaves us with only Basham to replace either of them.
Or is it time to abandon the three at the back so Anel and Egan don't play together anymore, which also gives us an extra body in midfield and removes the option of starting Basham in games (no offence to him). It's all well and good saying the international break will help, but it won't as both will be away with their respective countries.
