Doyle?

I agree with all of this. I was very underwhelmed by Doyle who, after an amazing debut, spent the rest of the time either injured or in middling form.
It wasn't until March that we started to see a bit of what he's all about.

My only issue with signing Doyle is, where do we play him? We've signed Souza as a holding midfielder, when Doyle was at his best everything went through him in the middle.

The next problem is our tight budget and total lack of creativity and goal threat since losing Ndiaye, Berge and McAtee.
Should we be allocating a large chunk of our remaining budget to Doyle who doesn't really solve those issues?
Agree with this. Our lack of creativity got us relegated the last time, and as you say, Ndiaye, Berge and McAtee's creativity got us up and none of those are now with us. We've already signed Hamer who plays in a very similar position to Doyle, although he did play a fair few times as LCM in a flat 3 last season (according to SoccerWay) so I suppose we could have Doyle - Souza - Hamer if we play like that, tho it seems a little off balance to me. Hamer also played LM in a double pivot a few times, so we could have Doyle - Hamer which I do like the sound of, but then where does Souza play? It could be possible that Hamer is pushed further upfield to attacking midfield right or 10, leaving a midfield duo of Doyle - Souza, but then Hamer never played in that position for Coventry last season (not to say he couldn't).

Signing Akpom instead of Doyle (if money is tight) + a creative attacking midfielder on loan + Archer (loan or buy) would to me make more sense and solve some of the issues of replacing Ndiaye and McAtee (if Hamer is the replacement for Berge). I'd probably prioritise O'Brien before Doyle as well for balance and budget for when we do play a flat 3 in midfield.

That said, I do rate Doyle and if Hamer can play further upfield, then Doyle back could be a very good signing for the team (as long as the budget stretches to solving the creativity issues we have)

So in, summary - "do owt you want, I'm not fussed either way"?? 😂

Agree about some of the reservations on Doyle.
Based on what I saw last season he's above average Championship standard but not PL standard.

However I think he has a bit of everything....a great all rounder with a great mentality (captain material)
He's also still young and you would expect him to slightly improve all aspects of his game.
If he improves like I expect then I'm pretty confident he'll be a very reliable average PL standard player
Hence why I don't think he'll ever break into Man City's team, doesn't show any sign of being world class.

Where as McAtee isn't this all round player, he's weak in some aspects of the game but brilliant at other parts.
The best parts of McAtees game show he has potential to be high PL standard, so think Man City will still monitor his progress and want to keep him.

Depends what the agent is asking maybe United think 30k/week, maybe his agent came back with we gotta start at 100k. Saw this sort of thing on TV once years ago (Peterborough United I think) the agent came out with something outrageous the manager straight off said, 'well we're too far apart I don't think we'll make a deal'.

Edit: Yes it was the manager was Barry Fry.
Think that you have missed a dictionary or swear words out of your quote if that was Barry Fry

If Utd are actually offering £30k / week there's as much chance of you and I playing at Forest. He's already on a LOT more than that.

Fucking hell. It's getting to a point where getting circa £170m for promotion to the Prem isn't enough to cover expected fees and wages of all those with their noses in the trough.
It's sobering and depressing in football terms.

Based on our situation we seem to be struggling to bring in a few decent Championship players with a few youngsters who may or may not make it.

Hardly the bounty that Sky and the PL make it out to be.

He's no Daniel Barlaser, that's for sure.

It’s ironic that we’re hanging on news about a £many m transfer of Tommy Doyle age 21 and one of youngsters Harrison Neal age 21 (5 months older than Doyle) is off to league 1 Stevenage. One wonders how and why Doyle has already had 2 loans to Championship clubs and Neal after a loan at League 2 Barrow has only just made it to League 1 level. Is Doyle so much better than Neal? If sneak is not tested at Championship level we’ll never know…

Barlaser is a really good Championship midfielder. Lies deep and has a great passing range, different to Norwood, gets a bit more advanced than that and can thread it through the lines.

At the time I wanted us to sign him (Jan window) our midfield were absolutely terrible. Not long after, we went on a run of several losses and the midfield looked to be the issue.
The sudden uptick in form from Doyle & McAtee did not look to be on the horizon. A lot of fans were indifferent about them going back.

Barlaser isn't good enough for the PL but for £1m I think he'd have really helped our promotion bid out. He'd certainly be starting for us now, mind.

It didn't matter in the end anyway as we were in an embargo pick pocketing Nigerian billionaires to avoid administration. 😉

As much as I’m sure we all hope Neal comes good Doyle is an England youth international and was statistically very good last season in the championship so yes I’d be happy to that at this stage in their careers Doyle is the better player.

He wasn't better than what we had. He didn't improve Boro at all and their fans seem to think he's shit.

The grass can seem greener on the other side but it often isn't. See also: Jed Wallace, John Swift. This summer's candidate seems to be Giles.

He would have walked into our side at that time, as Giles would now.
