Down memory Lane.....this day

I met Tony Mercer (Black & white Minstrel Show) in the stands before the kick off. My dad told me to get Tony's autograph on that match programme. I had no idea who Tony was as he was without the black facepaint! Blades wore yellow shirts and black shorts for the game. John "Yogi" Hughes (signed from Celtic) ran the show scoring two goals (one of them won MOTD goal of the month).

Yes I remember seeing Hughes goal, the 30 yarder top corner past Hopey years later on a BBC video (VHS not beta max :)) from the late 80s, still got it somewhere, 100 great goals from Match of the Day, or something like that. It had Besty scoring against us from october 71 and this one, but it was labelled against Wednesday :D.

It also featured two United goals from the 70s. Can you guess which ones they were?

You are right in describing Hughes 2nd goal ( Palace's 4th goal) but the goals from that game were not shown on SUFC MOTD video (produced in 1991). i have not seen the goals on TV or in any video again since 1971-72 season. If you mean MOTD the 1970ss, I have that video too somewhere but dont remember Hughes goal in it.

TC's goal didnt win MOTD goal of the month, it came second to Clive Woods winner for Ipswich in the FA Cup replay against L**ds. Keith Eddy's goal at Spurs in January 1975 did win goal of the month for January 1975

Dazzler, I believe you are correct.

Silent, this was a BBC MOTD video feating the best 101 goals from the 60s, 70s and 80s, there are some absolute belters on it. Micky Walsh for Blackpool which I think won Goal of the season, Alan Mullery's volley for Fulham, Ronnie Radford for Hereford and so on and so on. Magical memories.

There was also some lighter moments, there is a goal for Sniffer Clarke against Boro at Ayresome Park, and whilst Barry Davies or Motty are heaping the praise on L**ds, all you can hear is the crowd chanting 'You're gonna get you f*****g heads kicked in'.

5th December 1970. Luton 2 (Malcolm MacDonald, Jimmy Ryan) Blades 1 (TC pen)

My dad's car broke down when arriving in Luton town centre so it had to be left near a garage and we went straight to the match. After the game my dad called for the AA to repair the car!

In the link below, it is the first time I have seen footage of TC's penalty since it was shown on YTV 43 years ago (Luton's two goals was downloaded in a YouTube channel a few years ago but didnt include TC's penalty). I couldnt remember the reason for the penalty award but looking at it today I realised that Billy Dearden was as good as Jack Lester when it came to winning penalties (he won the penalty at Blackburn, QPR in the 1970-71 season (maybe one or two more) also won numerous penalties when we were in the 1st division) as he was quick at pushing the ball past his marker who thought there was a tackling chance but ended up tripping him. also I didnt realise Roger Hoy was doing his best to distract the 20 year old TC's concentration when TC was taking the penalty (Dave Powell had missed his penalty in the 3-0 win against Oxford in the previous week). I remember TC not looking too confident in taking the penalty and his effort was nearly saved by Tony Read. TC took two more penalties that season and failed to convert them (v Luton at home and away to Charlton). A question for you. Who were the three Luton players in that match that signed for the Blades ten or 11 years later? Two of them can be seen in the below footage but the other was the sub and I couldnt find him

John Ryan and Don Givens are two. Is Viv Busby the other one?

Well done! John Ryan is the right back that crossed for the goal (Despite Addison's attempt to dive for the ball- it was Addison's last competitive game for us as he was injured in the game. He moved to Hereford as player-manager in summer 1971) and Don Givens fishing the ball out of the net after the first goal. Viv Busby was the sub and I think he came on late in the game

December 12th 1970. Blades 3 Charlton 0

Midfielder John Barnwell was recalled to the team due to Colin Addison's injury. John joined us from Forest in April 1970 and his performances at the start of the season werent impressive as he looked "over the hill" so he was dropped after a few games and became a "forgotten" player. John Harris decision to bring back Barnwell paid dividends as he scored twice early in the game. They werent spectacular goals, just that he was in the right place and at the right time on both occasions only a few yards away from goal. Blades fans were amused about Barnwell being an "unlikely" two goal hero!Eddie Colquhoun added a third (all goals were scored at the Lane End) and later broke his nose after colliding with a goalpost (i think). We had two goals disallowed one before and one after the break

I just about remember being at that game..wasn't Barnwell part of a double signing..I'm seem to remember grabbing the Night Star off my Sister as she was walking home from work,to see Headlines on the back page of a double signing, although I could be getting confused of when we signed Addison and Carlin who could have signed at he same time two or three years earlier...We could do with Addison now..good in the air, decent on the ground and one of the best at shielding and holding the ball.

Billy Dearden was the other signing. I think more Blades were more excited at the new signing from Forest rather than the new signing from Chester!
Was it Dearden..what a bargain he turned out to be,what was it 10 grand.Barnwell never really made much of an impression, but was always injured in his time at the Lane...Loved Billy though, another one we could do with now.

Apologies boys and girls, work's been a killer this week, so I'm a bit behind here's a bit of an update which I'm sure will jog a few memories hopefully:

13th December 1969 Blades 6 Birmingham 0. Reece, Addison (2), Colquhoun, TC and Woody.

I remember the day even though I wasnt at BDTBL. I was at my dad's works xmas party. Picking me up at the end of the party my dad said that the Blades had won 6-0. I was impressed and started to think that my uncle Ronnie were right about the Blades being the better team to support despite my mum's 5 brothers telling me that Wendy are a better team to support (they lost 2-0 at L**ds that day). The Morning Telegraph on the following Monday had photos of all the Blades 6 goals

The photo on the front is from the previous 3-0 home win against Oxford. John Tudor makes a sneaky attempt to open the scoring by handling a right wing cross into the net. The ref spotted the handball and disallowed the goal. How many of you who can identify the Oxford player on the far left?

He's fat, he's round....

Think Mariner sliced it into his own net SB...Mick Quinn who was in the Pompey line up mentioned it on Talk Sport the other day.

I think this was the first game I took my new gf (wife to be bless her) she enjoyed it and became a Blade. Did we also beat WBA by a large score around this time?

Woody's goal was a penalty at the Kop end. He had a good record against Peter Shilton. I think he scored at least 6 times against him plus one in John Harris' testimonial match. Hockey's goal was late in the game when Shilton failed to hold a shot and Hockey was quick enough to tap the ball in. It was one of Hockey's last games for us before going to Norwich in a swap with Jimmy Bone . He had put in a transfer request for a while

8 of those youth players played in the first team (only Walton, Clark and Gray didn't) and only Bell was never a regular.

Alan Ball is IR for Blackpool.

Aye, collectively over 1500 appearances for the United first XI

I have a photo of the Youth team celebrating in the dressing room after beating L**ds in the 1964 NIL final. It was given to me by George Robinson who was our youth player between 1963 and 1966 (his twin brother, Bill, was our youth player too). George's grandson is a friend of my son's. The team that day was Walton, Badger, Clark, B Wagstaff, Bell, Barlow, Woodward, Jones, Birchenall and Disney. Also in the picture but did not play in the final were the Robinson twins, Hancox, Harrity (who was the taxi driver who took me and Maud Maxfield pupils from Dronfield/Eckington area to school in the early 1970s), Heaton, Cliff, Conley and Munks. Youth coach Eddie Edwards is in the photo too

Eddie Loyden who scored a hat trick for Barnsley against us in the 1970/71 County Cup is in that Blackpool line up
