Down memory Lane.....this day

I can remember picking up a Sunday paper from a Kiosk in Madrid, turning to the results and my knees actually buckling when I saw it. In the match report, chief bullshitter of the day (probably McDonald, but they all merge into one amorphous gloop over time) then claimed we were about to spend £1M on Marseille striker Artur Moses.

Can Silent/Dazzle Ships fill us in on his Lane career stats....

A seven goal thriller at Fratton Park, as United win 4-3 on the opening day of the season,60 years ago today, 1953. the programme cover depicts HMS Victory and this remained the cover through out the 1950s.

And the opening home game of the promotion season 1970-1, Billy Dearden makes his debut as united beat Swindon 2-1, Woody and Eddie Colquhoun the scorers.

Not a good day, on the whole....

The 1-0 win over Villa was on 21 Aug. 1965, Darren - not 1966. It's of no great significance to anyone else but it is to me. I moved to Sheffield the previous Sunday, rented a house on Grove Road, Millhouses and went down to see that match - my first at The Lane - the following Saturday.

Incidentally, the attendance at that Div. 1 game was 15,575. It would be twice that for a PL game against Villa today.

Sorry, you're absolutely right - slip of the finger - I knew it was the 65-66 season and I obviously got the key slightly wrong :-(

The next game was a 1-0 win at (eventual champions) Liverpool and we only lost one game before mid October sending us to the top of the table (in true SUFC fashion we then only won 2 out the next 12 and slid down the table, though we did end up a respectable 9th).

The Lincoln game Tyrone Thompson made his bow as a sub.

It was also the full debut of some guy called Phil Jagielka, whatever happened to him?

The photo in the front page of the home game against Swindon is from the 1st half of the FA Cup match against Everton in Jan 1970. We won 2-1 (Reece and Adddison the scorers) after going down at HT to an Alan Ball penalty. The late Gil Reece is on the far right and TC (who wore the number 8 shirt regularly in the 1969-70 season) is the other Blade player in the photo. Future Blade manager, Howard Kendall is the Everton player between Reece and TC. The Everton keeper is the late Gordon West

Wasn't that the game where Tommy Docherty said, apropos of our signing of Chris Guthrie "if you buy third division players, that's where you end up"?

I am intrigued as to how you got all those reserve programmes. Is there a market for them?[/

If he did he was spot on. He might also have been giving a snide aside at the fact that we said no to Francis Lee for £100k and yes to Guthrie for the same amount!

I just wondered where you got them from - did you attend all the games :)

Funnily enough, ......no

Back in the early seventies, the old man would regularly drag me down to the Lane for reserve games, usually on really cold nights . As a kid, I never ever considered spending me 1p or 2p on a reserve sheet, it would have only got folded up and binned. There were much more attractive things to spend me money on such as Anglo Bubblys, Bazooka Joes or ABC gum with football cards in! I think you can see where this is going.

There are a number of avenues that they can be gleaned from, attendance, auctions, family, programme dealers and perhaps the big factor in programme collecting nowadays.....ebay

Ah, the ABC cards.

As a 7 year old, I got virtually everyone of this set.

http://cards.littleoak.com.au/197374_abc_bluebacks/Sheffield United.htm

Were footballers a lot uglier then or was photography just a lot poorer. Currie and Woodward were not bad looking young men, but these cards make them look like Quasimodo and his less attractive cousin...

And worse still, from the same set: can't remember us playing in blue and white   :mad:

For various reasons too boring to go into, I have a memory of all United games* going back to 1961-62 and can tell you the date, opponents and scorers for each game. I don't go back to 1923...

* league, FA Cup, League Cup and a few minor cups (not including the County Cup) only.

To be honest, I have great difficulty remembering who scored last week, although this season so far, its not been too difficult.

keep them coming Daz

and also on this day:

1988 A Reading W3-1 (Stancliffe, Joseph, Deane)

Played cricket at Maher Road that day and suffered an injury to the bottom of my ribcage on the left that took a long time to heal. I bowled a bouncer (I bowl right arm) and felt something go on the left side. Walking and running was ok but when I bowled again it was too painful. I think it was a similar injury to Ian Botham had which ended his ashes tour in 1986-87. I found it hard to sleep on my left side for a long time. Luckily that day was near the end of the 1988 season and I was able to bowl ok in the net cricket season

Ah, Mather Road, I once went to see my best mate play an end of season game there with a few of the lads, and at half time we wandered over to the Half Moon. It was rammed, and five minutes later he came through the door. He'd been sent off. When we asked him why, he said he'd heard a rumour we were off to the pub. And he still wonders why he didn't make a professional footballer

electric lights eh ooooooh
Wednesday were embroiled in the betting scandal back then , they even look shadowy on the programme

Was it really 35 years ago today that the Blades humbled the European Cup holders Liverpool out of the League Cup. In the days, when the big boys didn't play their reserves.

A brief shaft of light in an otherwise very disappointing season that ended in relegation. And as usual, a relegation snatched from the jaws of safety.
