Not at all sure about DCL, when he came on tonight he seemed very lightweight, didn't really get involved, wasn't hungry for the ball just flittered about on the edge of things and never looked like winning a header. I thought even Scougall was more physically intimidating than DCL and why oh why he went to finish what was a simple tap in, with the outside of his right foot when the ball just needed side footing into the bottom corner with his left, I will never know, professional footballer? Absolutely unbefuckinglievable.

On that showing I'm afraid Everton are welcome to him

Can't write him off after 15 minutes surely?!

I would have sold him and not Adams, but whether there was genuine interest in him, I don't know.

He is a young lad that needs time to develop.

Problem for me, is Che arrived and was a revelation - our coaches (last season) appeared to chuck him in the gym and he lost a yard or two of pace and his first touch seemed to be coached out of him. Che played on instinct but was slow in thought if given time.

We need to handle DCL right - but there is no guarantee in a results based industry that we will.

My opinion of Calvert Lewin is on a number of sub appearances and a few games last season. On that evidence he looks a long way from being anywhere near a first team player.

His control is poor, he is clumsy and lacks composure. He also makes bad runs and gets caught offside a lot

I have seen absolutely nothing in this lad yet and looks like someone who has won a draw to play in a real game!

Hope he goes and proves me wrong

He needs time and more experience......he will gain bulk and more composure with time.
I think he has some decent attributes, but it's way too early in his career to start slaughtering him, or expecting that much from him either.
He will probably end up on loan again in Jan if we manage to sign a few more players.

Someone behind me nearly had a heart attack slagging him off....a cross came in from the bye line on the left and ended up on the edge of the 18 yard box........and he went ballistic that DCL wasn't there, saying that's the position he should have been in....instead he was positioned on the edge of the 6 yard box.
I'm sure if he was on the 18 yard box and the ball had crossed the 6 yard box, this guy would have gone ballistic because he was on the edge of the box.
Can't win with some ppl.

His first touch forced him into trying to finish with the outside of his foot and he then made a hash of it. Hopefully a bit more composure will come in time.

I feel for him, he's desperate to get that first goal in a competitive game for us. We have to be patient with him.

Excellent young player who was played out of position on the left. His touch and aerial ability shone despite this. He does seem a bit anxious though, and needs a goal at the lane to settle him down.

He's quick, agile and seems to be able to dribble to either side and at a good speed, a bit like Jamie Murphy. In fact comparing him to Murphy when we first signed him isn't a bad comparison.

We expect too much from our young lads.
We listen to the hype from the club telling us about these young stars, when in truth all the actual top young kids likely to be the big players in the game are with bigger clubs.

Our lads are not the next Messi.....Rooney or whatever.
They are the best Athletes for their age group from the local area, who also have the most consistent touch. They are learning the game at Pro level to do a specific job, rather than having the magic in their feet and arrogance about them to just play with confidence and take the game by the scruff.
Those with the silky skills to turn games on their own are rare. And in truth we don't have any in the academy for the first team.

These lads will stand no chance if they are torn to shreds at every turn.

Lol, not long ago people were pissed off at the thought of getting £1m for him.

Just shows how clueless fans can be at times.

A stereotypical product of the athletes over ballers philosophy that has blighted our academy structures for years.

Not the lads fault.

It were a bit too Sunday league weren't it...got to put it behind him and work hard.

So big athletic Reed is another example of this then?
The topic is DCL.

Or should we change it to Messi / Iniesta ???

Good athlete, technically (as it stands of now) poor. He may well get better, much better.

The comment I have made relates to how academies encourage good athletes in the belief they can be moulded into footballers. The theory being if your relatively fat /slow / short you will never ever make the grade. It's changing but it's still endemic throughout the country.

Yeh, but I saw this arguement done to death on another thread....I read through it all and decided on points that you had lost it.
And on a side note...when i've seen DCL play at academy level, he had always looked technically quite competent, he maybe just needs to settle down a little when he plays in the first team...maybe he gets a little apprehensive!!

Agree, we keep producing these big 6 footers when we really need some smaller players.
I am sorry Rodley but producing 6 footers instead of smaller lads is garbage.

Whiteman 6ft, Reed 5ft 6, Kelly 5ft 10, Semple 6ft 2, Brookes 5ft 10,

If they are deemed good enough to develope then size does not matter apart from Semple maybe who as a centre half needs to be a certain height as was Maguire.

Big problem for these lads is that CW knows he will lose his job if he plays them and gets turned over, but to be honest his so called best 11 are no better, it's just they get the game time in the first 11.

Looked decent in pre season at Grimsby but last night, looked.. Well Sammon like.

So what do we do to prepare the kids mentally for the adult game? It's just as big a part of the game as the physical and technical side.
