I always remember Sirrel as the man who sold Currie. Not held in particularly high esteem after that I'm afraid.
Having said that, I'm sure I have his autograph in an old book somewhere - along with other players of the day - if a scan of it is any good to you?
He became our manager in October 1975View attachment 16537 View attachment 16539
Sadly both pics taken at Notts County - second one is b/w but taken in 1975 - the year he became manager

Unfair on Sirrel! When TC signed the new contract in 1973 he had a gentleman's agreement with the board that he would be allowed to get a transfer if the club get relegated. There was nothing Sirrel could do about it
We had won only one in our first thirteen league matches, we had some "over the hill" players in the squad, he didn't sign Chris Guthrie. I think Jimmy Johnstone and Paul Garner (quite decent) were his only signings for that season. Any manager would have struggled to keep us up. He gave debuts to Keith Edwards, Simon Stainrod, Tony Kenworthy and Gary HamsonApart from keeping us up

At the mo I am reading "Matador" which is a book about TC. There was something I wasn't aware about until recently. It said Ken Furphy was told in 1973 that the club would have received £500,000 for a supermarket to be built behind the new stand. The Town Hall turned down the application in around 1974Before my time but we finished 6th in the top flight the season before. It's hard to understand how we declined so quickly.
Sirrel had a great track record at Notts County before and after. Maybe the curse of the Bramall Lane hot seat has been around longer than we think!
P.s. A team with Woodward, Currie and Edwards in it sounds pretty good on paper.

I was thinking of buying the Tony Currie Matador book but is it the same rebranded book as the "tony Currie - a quality player" - certainly the same author ? Yes same author. I couldn't find my "Quality player" book, I think I lent it to a friend of mine and forgot about it. Am enjoying "Matador" at the mo and I think there seemed to be some more "new material" especially on his playing daysI was thinking of buying the Tony Currie Matador book but is it the same rebranded book as the "tony Currie - a quality player" - certainly the same author ? But we'd only been a middling team the seasons before that, really. We could beat anyone or lose to anyone on our day.
My dad made a a point to me about that team once. He said that when he thinks back to Badger and Hemsley, what stands out was their attacking ability as full backs. When he thinks back to Colquhoun, what strikes him is his ability to get forward and head in a corner.
These are defenders remember, and it isn't their defending that stands out in the memory. Ask him about the late 50s and early 60s defence, however...
I seem to recall that players were often considered old at 30. They didn't seem to go on as long as modern players (with a few notable exceptions) do at the top level. I could be wrong as it's just my perception.Interesting website:-

Badger and Colquhoun were 30 at the start of that relegation season. Helmsley was the oldest player at 32.
You wouldn't really expect them to be "over the hill" at that age.
Comparing it with the squad from the season before there are no obvious big names missing.
Bill Dearden maybe but he wasn't the top scorer in 1974/75 it was Woodward with only 12 (10 in the relegation season).
Maybe key players got injured? Maybe it was down to a lack of confidence after the bad start?
Maybe we can blame Steve Faulkner?
I can't find any details or any archive materials that reference any such application for around that time. I can find one for 1983 for resi and a supermarket which was to include the Arnold Laver sawmill site as well as the south stand car park.At the mo I am reading "Matador" which is a book about TC. It also says in the book we got £250K for the petrol filling station. I assume that is the one on John Street/Bramall Lane corner?I can't find any details or any archive materials that reference any such application for around that time. I remember being told 20 years ago that we owned the most valuable land out of the football clubs in England apart from Chelsea.Probably. Did we own that land? Can't remember what was there in the 70's. Can remember Jack Archer sports shop opposite though...

His weird tooth is in a different place in the panini stickers photo and the other colour photo. Either one of the photos is the wrong way round, or his weird tooth kept moving. I'm going with the latter.
I am talking about 20 years ago not now!Somebody must have being pulling your pisser.
Off the top of my head, Fulham is prime West London riverside, Arsenal a few acres in Islington, QPR in Shepherds Bush and even Brentford is probably worth a lot more than BDTBL due to its proximity to Heathrow.
Norwich too, I guess.

OkSo was I.
London real estate in the 90's was worth a lot more than land oop North.
We always had a thin squad. A couple of injuries and Colin Franks and David Bradford were in the team to start at Old Trafford.
It's a 'migratory tooth'. It started out on his elbow and by the time the little fucker carked it, it had travelled to his arsehole.
It made grooves in his shit. My mate told me that. Honest. It was in Shoot/Goal.
pommpey
Our team at the back end of 74-75 when we took 17 points from the last 12 games (23 in new money) and went from mid table to 6th was usually as follows
Brown
Badger
Colquhoun
Franks
Bradford
Currie
Eddy
Speight
Woodward
Dearden
Field
Bradford was in at LB due to an injury to Hemsley and we occasionally saw bit parts for Flynn and Cammack.
Come the start of 75-76, the team was exactly the same, except Guthrie was in for Dearden and Currie and Colqhoun missed the first two games through suspension/injury. So from game 3 (a 1-5 defeat at Man Utd), we had our full top 6 team from 74-5 plus our new record signing. We lost 11 out of the next 12..
Obviously you would not expect 10 players to go from a top 6 team to relegation certainties in the space of 4 months, so it is all a bit of a mystery. I can only assume it was a confidence issue. They lost a few and spiralled down from there.
