Our team at the back end of 74-75 when we took 17 points from the last 12 games (23 in new money) and went from mid table to 6th was usually as follows
Brown
Badger
Colquhoun
Franks
Bradford
Currie
Eddy
Speight
Woodward
Dearden
Field
Bradford was in at LB due to an injury to Hemsley and we occasionally saw bit parts for Flynn and Cammack.
Come the start of 75-76, the team was exactly the same, except Guthrie was in for Dearden and Currie and Colqhoun missed the first two games through suspension/injury. So from game 3 (a 1-5 defeat at Man Utd), we had our full top 6 team from 74-5 plus our new record signing. We lost 11 out of the next 12..
Obviously you would not expect 10 players to go from a top 6 team to relegation certainties in the space of 4 months, so it is all a bit of a mystery. I can only assume it was a confidence issue. They lost a few and spiralled down from there.
Walth Snr says it was a mystery, "All you could do was get blind drunk", he says.
