Does anyone have a colour photo of Jimmy Sirrel from when he was our manager?

I always remember Sirrel as the man who sold Currie. Not held in particularly high esteem after that I'm afraid.

Having said that, I'm sure I have his autograph in an old book somewhere - along with other players of the day - if a scan of it is any good to you?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the chairman who made him sell Currie according to this article

Unfair on Sirrel! When TC signed the new contract in 1973 he had a gentleman's agreement with the board that he would be allowed to get a transfer if the club get relegated. There was nothing Sirrel could do about it

We had won only one in our first thirteen league matches, we had some "over the hill" players in the squad, he didn't sign Chris Guthrie. I think Jimmy Johnstone and Paul Garner (quite decent) were his only signings for that season. Any manager would have struggled to keep us up. He gave debuts to Keith Edwards, Simon Stainrod, Tony Kenworthy and Gary Hamson

It said Ken Furphy was told in 1973 that the club would have received £500,000 for a supermarket to be built behind the new stand. The Town Hall turned down the application in around 1974

But we'd only been a middling team the seasons before that, really. We could beat anyone or lose to anyone on our day.

My dad made a a point to me about that team once. He said that when he thinks back to Badger and Hemsley, what stands out was their attacking ability as full backs. When he thinks back to Colquhoun, what strikes him is his ability to get forward and head in a corner.

These are defenders remember, and it isn't their defending that stands out in the memory. Ask him about the late 50s and early 60s defence, however...

Yes same author. I couldn't find my "Quality player" book, I think I lent it to a friend of mine and forgot about it. Am enjoying "Matador" at the mo and I think there seemed to be some more "new material" especially on his playing days

I seem to recall that players were often considered old at 30. They didn't seem to go on as long as modern players (with a few notable exceptions) do at the top level. I could be wrong as it's just my perception.

I can't find any details or any archive materials that reference any such application for around that time. I can find one for 1983 for resi and a supermarket which was to include the Arnold Laver sawmill site as well as the south stand car park.

Bradford was in at LB due to an injury to Hemsley and we occasionally saw bit parts for Flynn and Cammack.

Come the start of 75-76, the team was exactly the same, except Guthrie was in for Dearden and Currie and Colqhoun missed the first two games through suspension/injury. So from game 3 (a 1-5 defeat at Man Utd), we had our full top 6 team from 74-5 plus our new record signing. We lost 11 out of the next 12..

Obviously you would not expect 10 players to go from a top 6 team to relegation certainties in the space of 4 months, so it is all a bit of a mystery. I can only assume it was a confidence issue. They lost a few and spiralled down from there.
