DCL Coming Back

I wouldn't. DCL is going to be a much better player.

I'm not sure what the obsession is with McNultt amongst some of our supporters. He's bang average.

He scores goals. He proved it last season and he's proving it this season.

I like players who score goals. They help you win matches.

You're right, that does help.

His prolific 10 goals in 36 games makes me wonder why Adkins prefers a guy with 12 goals in 24 games!

6 goals in 9 games at Portsmouth suggests he's better suited to that level.

I wouldn't say DCL is much of a prospect really.

If he was he'd have shown a bit of something by now.

He's among a few disappointing academy players of recent.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not...

Surely you wouldn't be so rash as to write off an 18 year old striker who has just scored 8 goals in 26 matches? The one that's getting great reviews from staff and fans alike, and has a fantastic attitude for a youngster?

No, that can't be right.

That was good for second top scorer last season in a team that had difficulties scoring.

I wouldn't have him in place of Sharp, but I'm struggling to name another forward on our books who's better. Certainly not Sammon.

I'm not writing him off, I'm just saying he hasn't come on as well as the club had presumably hoped. I think he's been dissapointing, as has Reed.

Stupid.

8 goals in 26 matches in his first run in a professional set-up at the age of 18. What's disappointing about that?
If he was anything worth keeping he ought to have shown a bit of something for us by now.

8 in 26 is hardly impressive at league two level either.

Give me 26 appearances up front in league two and I reckon I could match that.

Not good enough for me.

He's 18. EIGHTEEN!!! This isn't fifa. It's a man's game.
Even if you're attempting a wind up which I imagine you are it's incredibly stupid.

I honestly think I could score 8 goals if I got given 26 starts/appearances in league two. He's 18, he's younger and fitter.

How is it incredibly stupid? There's a reason he hasn't been mentioned much you know.

You can't educate pork.

That is a bit silly. What's the highest level you have played at?

Why is it? I haven't even played for a club, but I still don't think it's silly to suggest an above average footballer is able to get eight goals in twenty-six starts. You'll have many chances in that twenty six, one's you won't need much ability to convert.

How is that deluded? Twenty-six starts to get eight goals. Have you even thought about it?
You'd be lucky to have 8 shots, assuming you're not some kind of footballer...

Yes, but we aren't talking about someone that's alien to football are we?

Not necessarily just me either. An above average footballer will get enough convertible chances in 26 appearances to be able to reach 8 goals.

I remember a few years back we sent a player off on loan to Northampton in the autumn. It was his first taste of first team football, coming in League 2. He played less than ten games, came back, and I then saw his United debut in the Cup at Orient in a highly entertaining game. The player looked OK in that, but perhaps not ready for a regular starting role.

In April he made his league debut for us in the Championship. By the summer he was sold to the Premier League.

He was 18 at the time. Clearly back in those crazy days of 7 years ago it was a totally different time before the era where people were written-off at this age.

Wind-up aside, he has started only 11 games with 15 sub appearances so a return of 8 goals for a raw 18 year old would seem to be a decent start in most peoples eyes.

Interestingly, most 'good judges' at the time thought he was going to make it at centre half. He was also considered £2M worse than his namesake at the time.

I think most people would agree Jon Stead is a reasonable professional footballer who plays up front. He's scored 4 in 21 appearances in league 2 this year (according to wiki). Do you really think you're better than Stead? If so, why haven't you had a career playing football including in the prem?

We'll have to agree to disagree. We'll see where he is a bit further down the line.

No, I'm saying you'd receive at least 8 convertible chances in 26 league appearances. Even for an above average footballer. Add up the minutes, the probability of 8 chances coming your way is very much on the side of the player.

I confess that I thought he was going to end up as a CH but I always thought he'd do better than Naughton. Sometimes we guess wrong, sometimes we guess right and when we do we think we know a bit about football.

Indeed. Crucially though, not many people were saying much when he returned from Northampton. I certainly don't remember anyone suggesting "well, I'd have expected more from that Walker by now, he's 18 after all – ain't going to make it".

He may well end up there when he loses a bit of pace. My lad always told me he was the better of the two and he was 12 at the time !

There are apparently 8.2 million adults who play football in the England

http://www.thefa.com/news/my-football/2015/jan/football-participation-on-rise

Assuming an average squad size of 25 per club that gives around 2300 players playing for the 92 FL and PL clubs - i.e. 0.03% of all those who play football. Those who play in the 4th Division may not be at the very top, but make no bones about it, that are in the elite of players in England.

So, in order to even get a kick in the 4th Divisiion, you would need to be better than 99.97% of everyone playing football in England.

That's you is it?

I'm guessing it was a similar figure when I played and it's quite depressing that there were over 8m better players than me. In this country alone.
