To be fair, he's got a previously decent goal return (albeit in league 1). Could be exactly the type of player that lord Wilder manages to turn around and become a world beater. Were a side that creates lots of chances & might be exactly what he needs. QPR arent exactly known for creating chances at will, so it's no surprise he's struggled.

Not going to write him off before even kicking a ball for us!

I think he's more a Billy backup.

Not sure it really works like that: for someone to be signed to be "Billy's backup", you're assuming that he's automatic first choice, which I don't think is the case.

I'd also say he's capable of pairing up with any of our other strikers.

Absolutely. I just feel that he would be especially good with Billy. Could see him bringing Billy into the game higher up the pitch and creating a bit of space for him.

I sometimes get the feeling when Billy and Leon play together that they're acting as 2 centre forwards, rather than a striking team.

Is there any chance we get Wahington AND Hogan?

Wilder stated yesterday he was “hopeful for one, maybe two”. Naturally, we all assumed one would be Marvin Johnson, then hopefully a striker. But Boro signed that left back yesterday- yet still no movement on Johnson when the deal has supposedly been teed up for ages. Throw in the fact that Stevens has started the season well and that Lafferty is still not even linked with a move away.

Is it possible that the “one” Wilder was confident on was Washington, meanwhile, Villa have had a breakthrough with Abraham, making Hogan available. This means Wilder has decided to switch his budget and go with what we’ve got at LWB, and gone all in on strikers? No rush to bag Hogan before 12 as he wouldnt be able to play tomorrow anyway.

Why so dramatic? He's admittedly not as good as Hemed and Wells, but it should be obvious we can't afford them.

He's far better tham Lavery and more importantly, he's a different sort of player. I'd also say he's far better than K Moore as well.
It’s not dramatic, for me to be dramatic I’d have to dramatising - he IS fifth choice at QPR

I said if we were to go to QPR and sign Matt Smith I’d have been happy, I don’t that’s unrealistic either. I really don’t rate Washington, and 1 in 8 record is he really that much better than Lavery?

I don't know too much about him. Is he kind of a playmaking striker. Will he play just off of sharp/Clarke? If so could this be wilder looking to give us another option when we play without duffy and Woodburn? Maybe when Coutts comes back it he will replace Duffy in the tougher/away games similar to basham so far this season. Washington could so what fill the playmaking void left by Duffy.

He's more of a hard worker, runs the channels etc decent pace.

Good to see you continuing to put a positive slant on things EC, How many times have you seen Washington play btw?
I’m not going to be positive for the sake of it chief unlike some of you.

Look at the Leonard thread I’ve praised the club for sticking to their guns RE pricing and that I want him to stay. I’m not going to pretend I think I rate a player.

Handful at best, I know what he’s about and that’s about it. But QPR fans don’t rate him at all, his goal record is woeful and it makes a mockery of our ‘we only want proven championship strikers better than what we have’ policy.

I think if this was a signing we'd have made earlier in the window it would have generally have been well received, the fact that it has come now after the names we've apparently been chasing all summer ie/ Hogan, Gallagher etc.. there will be a few grumbles.

For what it's worth, i think he could prove to be a useful loan signing.

Well if QPR supporters don't rate him then he must be rubbish - if that's the gauge you're using (rather than CW & team's professional research and opinion) then why not ask P'boro supporters instead - you would get a different view.

You could always wait to see how he gets on for Utd before casting judgement.

QPR fans seem to be glad he's going.

This could be that he doesn't fit their style, therefore doesn't get game time though so I'll reserve judgement until I've seen him for my self.

He's young and pacy, with international caps. Sounds ok to me so far.

Don't you think it's a coincidence that since we were linked with Johnson, Stevens has improved? Granted Norwood has helped but, If we don't sign genuine competition for him, he will slip back into the comfortable state he did last season and then that's when his form dropped.

I’d be fairly happy with this... it’s been obvious for weeks the top targets aren’t going to sign for us. No one can paint this as a TOP championship signing but he has a good record at Peterborough and was playing for a basket case club.

This at least covers us for injuries and provides some pace and running we don’t currently have. I’m fairly happy here, if we add Johnson it’s not too bad a deadline day.

Obligatory goal compilation... first and the last are against us!

Based on those goals, he certainly has an eye for goal and likes to have a go, from distance too. Something we have been missing. Lets hope CW can get him on form. Looks a good signing in IMHO.

In different divisions.

I've just given you 3 reasons and you've chosen the one you can try and argue. Try looking at his stats.
Lavery's are better in the championship - no - really.

He might turn out good for us. Who knows? Give him a chance for fucks sake

This, i wasn't particularly inspired by signing duffy, or leon, or billy again, or o connell, or fleck if im totally honest, so rather than writing him off already, ill wait and see how he does after a sprinking of our managements fairy dust

Shrewd. Personally would prefer him the spunking obscene sums of money on Hogan who has struggle with injury for the last 12-18 months.

You're bemoaning that he's down in the pecking order, and his goal record at championship is poor - I understand that.

However, that doesn't tell the story. People (not saying this is definetly you) have a tendency to check Wikipedia for his goal ratio, and jump to a conclusion.
I think there are plenty of reasons why this could actually be a decent signing.

And as for Matt Smith, I think he's probably a more clinical player than Washington and may have scored more goals, but let's be honest: we'd have to adjust our style of play: he's a target man, and nothing more unfortunately.

I see your point but that was (and will remain) an aspiration but despite the efforts it hasn't come to pass in every case. All clubs have to compromise at times when plan A doesn't come off.

Few on here rated Clarke when he was signed yet look what happened. Let's just see how this lad goes with a fresh start.

Exactly this.

We've been talking all summer about signing a 'proven championship striker' and that we 'only want to improve on what we have' and we go for... Conor Washington.

It's 6 years condensed down into 2 minutes. You could make Jonathan Forte and Dean Hammond look like Van Basten and Luka Modric using this method. I'm not knocking him before he's kicked a ball for us but highlights reels are notoriously misleading.

Called this one weeks ago didn’t you Treeton Blade ?

Disappointing signing really. Not sure he’ll push Sharp. Never really delivered at this level and if he can’t get in at QPR, then he certainly won’t get in here.

Bit disappointing really that we weren’t in for Hemed, or Wells. Are we miles behind QPR in terms of what we can offer?

Got to agree, slightly disappointing, given the names linked, but he has good Championship experience, scores at this level, and is a workhorse.

Will fit into our style of play too.

Who remembers his thunderbolt at the Kop end for Peterborough?

Don`t think we were in for Hemed or Wells.

Lavery's are better in the championship - no - really.

What are Lavery's Championship stats? Has he even played in the Championship before?

Washington was a top player at Pboro and I think this is a good signing. Right age, pace, solid build and a lot to prove. Definitely better than Lavery.

I think he's the insurance policy with hopefully one more to come in...and if nobody else comes in he's a decent signing anyway
