I don’t know the answer so it’s a genuine question. but when was the last time he’s played defensive midfield?

Feels like about a decade ago in league 1 for us / maybe the championship for Huddersfield. If we’re buying a defensive midfielder I’d prefer us to get a specialist rather than hope a 30+ year old can remember how to do it.
John Stones doesn't seem to be doing too badly in midfield in the CL final, and he hasn't played midfield since he was at school. Good players are good players.

Stones was excellent last night. Most successful dribbles in a champions league final since Messi in 2015.

However "hasn't played midfield since he was at school"... He's been playing in midfield for Man City for a while now. They started him in midfield in the quarters, semi and FA Cup final.

Point still stands though doesn’t it - at the start of the season he hadn't played midfield as a professional footballer… by end of the season he’s smashing it in midfield at the very highest level. Quality is quality - it’s not at all impossible that Coady would make a great CDM. I’d love to see us try - imagine CM choices of Coady, Doyle, O’Brien and Norwood (Berge pushing up to CAM) - pure fantasy perhaps but could turn what is currently the weakest part of the team into (arguably) the strongest, as well as being experienced and future-proofed.

I’d spunk the whole transfer fee budget in midfield tbh - do loans and frees for defence and up front.

I didn't literally mean 'last night' was his first time :)

Think we can assume this is another transfer that won't happen based on Hecky's interview of not being able to sign ready made PL players, unless he's playing the media and other clubs into thinking we're skint! IF so he's doing a very good job at persuading everyone!

I'm totally convinced we're skint 🤔😉

I'd be very surprised if he's even someone we're considering.

He doesn't play in an area that needs urgent address, he doesn't fit the age profile, he isn't available on a free or a loan and his wages will be high.

i think hes someone were definetly considering could even be converted back to the defensive midfield role he once played if thats the case add doyle and obrien and thats the midfield sorted

Good move for him. Gives him a break from being on the defensive and I presume he doesn't have to move house.

That will be in the top 5 or so of fees paid in the championship. Incredible really. He's just turned 30 so it's not like there is any realistic resale value either.

£7.5m agreed with Leicester. They will have a far better side than us at this rate, may as well swap places with them and save the hassle

If it is indeed a fee of £7.5m (in addition to his signing on fee and agents fee and his large wages) for a 30 something right footed centre back then they are welcome to him.

He would be a good signing but he ain't all that. Hes not worth that size of outlay for us. Leicester can probably afford him as they have been in the PL for umpteen years and have just sold Madisson to Spurs (or are about to) for £40m. Move on to the next one. No real loss.

As a bloke and a player I think he'd have been great for Utd (especially if would have been able to play LCB). However, as that amount + a sizeable wage, I'm sure there will be better options out there
