Player Suggestion Connor Goldson

Shame. I've been suggesting this lad on Blades Mad for a while now. Exactly the type of player I like to see us snap up. Already decent for the level, athletic and wiht time on his side to improve.

Byrne would be a fantastic addition but he will end up in the Championship if he goes.

Not playing much at all for Brighton at the moment.

A loan move for him might be an idea?

Would be surprised if we let him go out on loan at the moment. He's pretty much 4th choice CB normally but was on the bench in our last match due to injuries. Saw him play and score in the U21's a couple of weeks ago and given the chance could be a very good player for us.

How is Murphy doing ?

He's doing pretty well, looks good cutting in and running at players, sometimes doesn't make the right decision but definitely lifts the fans. Thought he had a poor game against Burnley but that's the nature of wingers I guess. We're struggling up top at the moment, create a lot of chances but don't stick enough away, I'm hoping at some point he's given a more central roll where he could potentially cause havoc running off Hemed or Zamora.
Having said that, we're all hoping for a loan striker today to come in and bolster our injury ravaged squad and hold us over until January.

Well if he is not featuring much for you then a loan move to us would be handy. Although injuries to your squad may mean you won't let him go.

We may have to look at getting his former team mate Grandison.

Saw Goldson play last night in a U21 defeat at home to Arsenal. Scored the opener off a corner before we lost 2-1. He was a stand out player from our point of view.
On a side note, Murphy was excellent last weekend, involved in both our goals :)

If anyone cares!

Connor came on to make his home debut as a second half sub last weekend. This came about with Lewis Dunk banned for the match and Uwe Hunemeier becoming injured during the game. (One now on a rapidly growing and highly concerning injury list.) He was somewhat unfortunate on the timing of this debut with us already being 2 down and seeming quite keen to allow Middlesborough more. He was alright, looked a little nervous but seemed relatively strong. I genuinely think he will come good.

Now, having said he looked half decent, I think last weekend showed us that a decent side could easily rip us apart. Our chairman has hinted at bringing in new faces in January to strengthen for a promotion push and would not be at all surprised if an experience solid CB was on his shopping list. Hypothetically, with Dunk back from suspension and Hune hopefully back by the end of Jan, Goldson could well end up out on loan for some first team experience, something he desperately needs imo.

Side note - Match finished 0-3 to Middlesborough, they are by far the best side I've seen in the championship this season and fancy them to go on and win it. The likes of Derby, Hull, Burnley and Us (The Albion) are all much of a muchness and equally poor by comparison so 2nd is anyones guess.

Second side note - Murphy was pants.

Murphy didn't have many "pants" performances with us but he did have more than his fair share of ineffective ones. I always felt like a strong pacey fullback could usually keep him quiet.
Teams would sometimes double up on him too.
I would say that 90% of the fans wanted to keep him while the other 10% thought we could do with the money and maybe even replace him with a more consistent winger.
Incase you aren't overly familiar with our transfer dealings, we drafted in Martyn Woolford in his place.
To quickly wrap up my point;
you've got a bargain although maybe not a world beater, 10% of all fans are delusional and Maryn Woolford is shit.

Goldson was a player I banged on about for ages on blades mad when he was at Shrewsbury. Tall, strong, athletic. Can play RB or CB and chips in with goals. Young and on the up too. I thought he’d be perfect for us, Wigan, Millwall or a low end championship club. A team chasing promotion to the Prem might be just beyond him at this stage of his development but as I said he’s young and has a good chance of getting there. Swansea wanted to sign him into their development squad a couple of years ago but he opted to stay at Shrews as he wanted to play. We’re still in the market for a centre half but I’d rather try to sign someone permanent with a view to building something for next season as I think it’s likely (though not looking as certain as it was a couple of weeks ago) that we’ll miss out this year. Dan Burn seems more realistic on that front.

Why do people keep saying that Woolford was a replacement for Murphy? Never the case. He was always cover and that is the role he has taken even after Murphy went.

Goodson started his first match for us at home on Friday, scoring the only goal past the wrong keeper in a 1-0 defeat to Wolves.
With the exception of his one mistake, he does seem a very capable defender.
Going forward Murphy was again mediocre at best, poor at tracking back, lightweight, unable to beat his man and crosses never beating the first man. I know only too well that wingers blow hot and cold but at the moment he has been poor albeit not helped having an antique right-back labouring behind him as a makeshift left-back. We're all hoping he looks better with a proper left back behind him and the loan signing of Ridgewell will surely be music to his ears ahead of Bong and/or Rosenior returning.
So, you lot gonna make the playoffs? :)

I know you didnt pay much for murphy but you paid well over the odds for him
He knew it too thats why he went running into the chairmans office begging to leave when you came in for him

He had some good games for us but for me against decent teams he used to disapear up his own arse
He is lower spl quality and he knows it

Disagree about the pricing and his quality though. He was comfortably our best player, not hard competing with this lot I know but the point remains.

I'd say he that he is low-mid Championship quality. We didn't need to sell him, but I think his reason for moving (to try get in the Scotland team) was pie in the sky from the off.

It's been a while, just thought I'd drop by with an update on Goldson and Murphy. Goldson got his chance in the first team due to injuries and my god has he taken it! He's possibly our best CB, with Dunk beside him I feel we have a very capable young pairing that will hopefully only get better. (With us I hope!)
Murphy has also left his indifferent form in the past and is turning into one hell of a player, currently keeping Lua Lua out of the starting 11, his form seems to have risen since with the arrival of Knockaert on the opposing wing, the pair of them giving us the much needed creativity that we lost in December.
Maybe rose tinted glasses so don't tell anyone, but I think we could just sneak the auto's while the rest of the country sits arguing between which two of Middlesboro, Hull and Burnley will finish top two. (Honestly I did take my meds this morning!)
Side note: Unfortunately your pig f***ing neighbours are also looking a pretty decent prospect.
I still fancy you lot for the playoffs, may be a close run thing but 5-6 seems a realistic target, I know maybe not what you were hoping for this season but my fingers are crossed for you. :)

There's not a winger been born who hasn't been inconsistent. Murphy is well worth the patience you need to show in the lean times, not least because his finishing ability is miles ahead of most who play his position. If he was more powerful and driven he could be Premiership.

Fancy us to get in the play-offs or to win them as well? With our awful play off record then its probably best we stay out of them.

Murphy sounds the same as when we had him, he was shit at first then came good. A mate of mine who played with him at Motherwell said when I asked about him "on his day unplayable but when he's bad he wouldn't get a game in the Sunday league". Good summary in my view.

With ccv leaving, heneghan on the verge of leaving, could there be a potential loan coming in? If so is it worth putting forward goldson as an option. Chris Hughton said today in an interview that Brighton are trying to get someone in so that goldson can go out on loan for some game time.

What game time would he get with us if Basham stays fit?

Good shout. But there'll be more suitable places for him to go than us. We'd be clogging the RCB position a bit too much.

For me goldson would go in the middle. I'm not saying we should sign him. Just saying it would be a good option . If wilder was looking for another. Considering he's championship proven. Personaly i like wright but seems wilder doesn't or not as much anyway. So I think goldson would get game time in the middle

Didn't Goldson have a heart operation or something and just getting back into action before Christmas?
Take your point however he's managed to play in the premier league once this season and has been in first team training for the past 3 months so I imagine he would be fit. And fair enough could take him a couple of games to get up to speed but that's also what it took Stearman

No issue with the signing at all if it came off. I am sure we were after him (or rumoured to be) when he was at Shrewsbury. I was just commenting that's where I had heard the name from more recently.

I suppose it's how you want to interpret what CW says

"Despite the recent arrivals of Ricky Holmes, Lee Evans, James Wilson and Ryan Leonard, Cameron Carter-Vickers’ return to Tottenham Hotspur has led to suggestions Wilder could be tempted back into the market for a centre-half. But, addressing the media ahead of Saturday’s visit to Norwich City, the United manager appeared to quash speculation that ending the 20-year-old loan means a direct replacement is on his way to South Yorkshire.

Stressing that Leonard, previously of Southend, can operate in both midfield and defence, Wilder said: “We’ve got a fantastic relationship with Spurs. We wanted to be up front and honest with them, his parent club."

Only if Stearman is injured. I can't see why Hughton would let him go to a club unless there's a good chance he'll get a reasonable number of games
